A window reveal is the timber surround of a window that the window frame is attached to, providing support and stability to the frame while creating a seal against drafts and noise. It is an essential aspect of interior design that often goes unnoticed, defining the depth of a building’s exterior walls. The standard reveal for window molding and door trim is 1/4-in., but can be adjusted if needed. A combination square works well for marking reveals.
A window reveal is the visible part of the wall opening, often finished with materials such as plaster, drywall, or trim, that provides a clean and aesthetically pleasing transition between the window frame. In architecture and home improvement, the term “window reveal” might seem technical, but it affects both the aesthetics and functionality of a window. Architraves are decorative moldings or trim that are installed around doorways and windows, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes. Wideline window and door reveals are available in meranti and finger jointed primed pine in standard sizes.
Reveals are usually structural members, performing the function of securing the window or door to the structure of the building. They are created using either metal or vinyl trim pieces installed between the drywall and the window frame and come in a variety of widths. The answer to “wherever looks good” is usually based on how oversized the rough opening was for the window unit.

Well.. I didn’t know this when using 50mm insulated plasterboard. I used the 50mm insulated plasterboard around my window reveal too and now there is only like 10mm of window frame showing. it looks so strange. I litterly have plasterboard, then 10mm of window frame and then the glass haha. Thankfully I saw this before doing the entire house. now I know what I’m suppose to use haha ! If it ends up being an issue, Its an easy fix anyway.
Now I might be mad, but I am insulating a whole wall with these now. reason, I do want to improve the insulation value in a little office room, but the layout does not allow for thick insulation on the internal wall due to the door position. These seem to be my only options in thickness. I hope the effort is worth it.
You can still get black spot even after using insulated plasterboard because it’s the window that draws moisture and you will always get a certain amount of moisture soaking into the plaster skim because it’s hemihydrate, you could use kitchen and bathroom paint but that’s not breathable so IMO it’s always going to be a battle stopping mould around windows.
