I am impressed the silicone sticks to the side of tile so well; good to know. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but other things to consider are that in dry conditions latex will shrink and continue getting harder, in wet it can expand (though temporarily may be okay) but will deteriorate. Silicone keeps its shape no matter the moisture content or age.
Acrylic latex caulk should be used if the area you are caulking does not see a lot of water, or you need to use a colored caulk or one that can be painted to match. Acrylic caulk works well for painting applications as it fills in any gaps between walls, ceilings, and woodwork trim, silicone is not paintable but very waterproof good for changes of plain in the corners
I agree with Sal that Silicone is extremely flexible….. But there is a different texture. When using a sanded grout or FA grout then you need to match the corners using the siliconized acrylic caulk that is sanded. I had a customer complain about the plastic look of silicone. Even after I explained the importance of silicone, she was more concerned about appearance. Also it is hard to get the silicone caulk many times.

I’m looking for material to help me seal leaking snow globes. I had an idea to use a little sealant on the rubber stopper that goes into the glass globe, like a film applied by a finger. Do you think that would work. I need it to stick and be waterproof but also I need to be able to peel it off both the glass and the rubber if I need to fix the same snow globe again in the future. Which sealant would be best for that?

Your a very wise man but they are produced for different fixes. Well maybe im wrong. In the states i thought id never see caulk in washroom. In UK s ilicone is kitchen, bathroom and toilet. Caulk is more of a lazy decorators filler inthe UK. Even then its no good. It shrinks and sinks but what do i know. Thank you for the article though. Sincerly
I agree; the silicone caulk is the right choice for this application. However, you didn’t mention that the acrylic caulk was sanded which will increase wear characteristics but decrease tensile strength. Also, the acrylic caulk will tend to seal itself as it cures, greatly extended the complete cure time for a thick bead. Still a good test, though.
Hi Sal! Thank you so much for the demonstration. After install, Do you use the silicone first before grouting? Such as, between tile and granite countertop; where tile butts against walls and cabinets, corners, or after you have grouted? Does grouting come first or second? I first put silicone around the corners of the drywall prior to thinset and tile installation to prevent potential cracking from behind. Now, I have installed the glass tile. Do you recommend grouting first? Or, silicone first? For example, silicone in corners again, and where the tile meets the countertop, then proceed to grout second? Or vice versa? Color matched silicone and grout from Custom Building Products (California based company). I will call them and ask, but I have watched you for a few years now, and think you are the leading expert on YouTube.

Great information. The problem I have with silicone is cleaning it and the surface it is on, you cannot scrub it at all in my experience so be delicate with it when it is used on surface contact areas like a shower glass frame. I have been looking for a match for nickle glass doors to put around the bottom where the flat aluminium lets water sit and it will degrade the finish really fast. I do not know why these expensive shower door manu’s don’t do this in the factory. No one in my area has “aluminum” “SS” colored silicone, it all l has to be ordered and you are not sure what the actual color is until you buy it.
O boy, what an explanation. And it’s still incorrect. Silicone ( rubber ) is used in places that have to be water or airtight and you can not paint it ! Indoors you can use it as glue for doorframes, Decorative Moldings, baseboards, Crowns, …. If you do not like to nail them. Can also be used to seal bath tops and sink corners. Acrylic ( like acrylic wall paint ) is to seal little joints indoors. Between wall and doorframes, Decorative Moldings, Baseboard, Crowns…. But you can paint it. You can not use it as glue. OEF that’s rocket science.
You said that the silicone would come off of tile, I just want to make sure that’s effective. What I’m wanting to do is draw out different shape and letters to design T-shirts. I want to make several of them and then be able to dip them into acrylic paint and design a T-shirts. I’m also wondering….if I were to just draw the design with silicone right onto the Tshirt, would it peel off easily after I spray the shirt with color ?
Nice demonstration but you could have done it in 30 seconds explaining one is flexible and the other one not really while trying to tear both apart. I wanted to get details on when it is fine to use acrylic and when you need to use silicone. For example on Google I found out that silicone is the better quality product used outdoor and to seal places where flexibility is needed and at places which get wet. However, it should be totally fine to use acrylic in places which are not moving over time and don’t get wet.
Sal I really am trying to learn and I want things to look their best. I just recently finished a tile job that was subway tile with bright white grout. I used bright white specralock1 in the field, sanded caulk on the edge of the bullnose that makes contact with drywall and silicone in the corners (ceiling,walls,bench). All color matching but the silicone was WAY brighter then the grout. Just spent the last few hrs replacing it with sanded acrylic caulk. Have you had this experience? I can email you pics.
Acrylic latex is garbage. The real caulk to compare is silicone and polyurethane. Tile floors should always use polyurethane. Wet areas like kitchen counters and bathroom tile should always use silicone it’s pretty simple. By the way tile installers are not experts in sealant installation in fact all large tile contractors sub sealant work to specialty contractors. This is not to disparage good tile contractors like Sal. It is a simple fact. He is an expert at installing tile.Not at sealants. The fact he is even including acrylic latex shows he has very little knowledge in this area.
this is an important article. People think it’s the same thing. I go to great efforts to show people it’s not. We have to go through great effort to get silicone. Most suppliers have the full line of latex crap, but only the partial line of the color match stuff. Sometimes we have to order it. It’s also an extra trip AFTER you grout….I get why people just grout everything tight. It’s a pain in the butt to get silicone, therefore we charge more money! People don’t think silicone is a big deal, but it is. So, next time you get two tile bids and one is way more than another, THIS is ONE of MANY reasons why! Thanks for putting this one out there! I agree silicone stays more flexible and bonds better. Over time the acrylic continues to get more brittle. My only grip with silicone is it seems to eventually get water in or behind it at some point and if you ever need to or have to clean it out and redo it its a nightmare. Where as the acrylic is a breeeze. I think at some point typically years down the road either will need some sort of maintenance
