Many natural methods of darkening hair use household ingredients like coffee or tea, while others, such as amla powder and mustard oil, may be harder to find. Most natural methods will only slightly darken your hair over time, but henna is a popular natural dye for a more drastic change.
To achieve darker hair safely and naturally, opt for herbal hair dyes, natural hair rinses, or homemade masks. Some of the best natural oils renowned for darkening hair include black tea, coconut oil and curry leaves, henna, gooseberry, and coffee, Indian gooseberry and Shika Kai, henna powder and citrus juice, henna and Indigo, coffee dyeing, carrot and beet, and mustard oil.
Mustard oil, rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, stimulates hair growth and improves melanin production, which darkens hair. Other home remedies for darkening hair include brewing a strong cup of dark-roast coffee, adding extra coffee grounds if desired, and using sage and black tea hair rinse for extra darkening power.
Sage can cause hair to become black, and adding black tea to the mixture can add dark highlights to hair. Castor oil, amla oil, or walnut oil can also darken hair, with olive oil sometimes used in a duet.
To make your own henna hair dye, mix about one cup of henna powder with 2 cups of lemon juice. You can also add a tablespoon of vinegar to help. Coffee can give your hair a rich, dark brown color, and beet juice can be used to boil a few beets and apply it to your hair.
In summary, natural methods of darkening hair can be achieved safely and naturally without harsh chemicals. By using natural oils, herbal hair dyes, natural hair rinses, and homemade masks, you can achieve healthier, more vibrant hair without the need for harsh chemical treatments.

Hair darkening can be achieved through various methods, including using a coffee mask, brewing black tea, or using oak bark. A coffee mask can be made by boiling water over ground coffee, allowing it to reach 1 cm above the level, and then applied to the hair. The hair should be secured with a shower cap and towel, and left to dry for at least 15 minutes.
Black tea can also be used to darken the hair, but it requires proper preparation and a proper rinse. Brewing 3-4 tablespoons of black tea with whole leaves and fresh nettle can strengthen the hair and enhance its color. Nettle, on the other hand, does not give the hair a greenish color.
Oak bark is another option for darkening the hair, as it prevents excessive hair loss and oiliness. Boiling 50g of oak bark for 15 minutes and straining and cooling it down can create a darkening rinse that can be used after each washing to gradually enhance the hair’s color.

What gives hair dark color?
Hair color is determined by the amount of melanin in hair, with an abundance of eumelanin giving black or brown hair and an abundance of pheomelanin giving red hair. The type and amount of melanin in hair are determined by many genes, with the best-studied being MC1R. This gene instructs the melanocortin 1 receptor, which controls the type of melanin produced by melanocytes. When activated, the receptor triggers chemical reactions inside melanocytes, stimulating them to produce eumelanin.
If the receptor is not activated or blocked, melanocytes produce pheomelanin instead. Other genes also regulate this process. Most people have two functioning copies of the MC1R gene, one inherited from each parent, resulting in black or brown hair. Over 90% of people worldwide have brown or black hair.
