What Are The Standard Items Found In A Buddhist Temple?

Buddhist structures consist of three main types: stupas, which contain holy relics or scriptures; temples, which are similar to churches; and monasteries, which contain living quarters and meditation cells for monks. Modern Buddhist temples often imitate ancient architecture, such as the main shrines of Taiwan’s Fo Guang Shan, the United States’ Hsi Lai Temple, and Australia’s Nan Tien.

Buddhist religious architecture developed in South Asia in the third century BC. Early Buddhists decorated statues, images, or altars with offerings, including flowers, especially lotus. Thai temple art and architecture, known as wats, are known for their enclosure and feature a small Buddha Hall and scripture hall separated by a solid wall. The interior spaces are narrow, contrasted by the spacious and ornate scripture hall.

Common architectural features found in Buddhist temples include altars, Buddha statues, and mandalas, geometric patterns used for visualization. Inside a Buddhist temple, sculptures and paintings depict The Buddha in different postures, surrounded by his main figures.

Buddhist temples are rich in symbolism, including mandalas representing the universe and lotus flowers. Most Buddhist temples in Japan are designed around four main architectural styles: Wayō, Daibutsuyō, Zenshūyō, and Setchūyō.

In conclusion, Buddhist temples represent the pure land, offering flowers and incense as traditional ways of praising the Buddha. The design of Buddhist temples often represents the five elements: fire, water, air, earth, and wisdom.

What are the elements of the Buddhist temple design?

Buddhist architecture is a distinctive architectural style found primarily in Asian countries, embodied by religious beliefs and practices. Key elements include stupas, viharas, chaityas, and pagodas. Stupas are dome-shaped structures containing relics of the Buddha, symbolizing his enlightened mind. Viharas are monastic dwellings where monks live and practice their religious duties. Chaityas are temples or prayer halls housing stupas, used for communal prayers.

Pagodas are multi-tiered structures found mainly in East Asia, built to house relics and for meditation purposes. Understanding these key elements provides deeper insight into Buddhist architecture’s unique characteristics.

What does a Buddhist temple consist of?

Temples serve as sites for meditation, chanting, and the study of Buddhist doctrine. The primary hall is typically adorned with images of the Buddha and an altar, which is considered the most significant element within the temple. The Three Jewels are venerated through the presentation of offerings and the performance of reverential gestures, such as bowing, while seated on cushions or chairs positioned on the floor.

What do the furnishings of the temple symbolize?

The Tabernacle’s furnishings serve as a metaphor for prayer, with the altar of incense representing God’s people’s prayers to the unseen Father. The Table with the Bread of the Presence symbolizes Jesus, the Bread of Life, who intercedes for us and helps us in our prayers. The eternal flame of the candlestick reminds us of the Holy Spirit who assists us in prayer.

The Tabernacle also teaches us about the church, which is a group of believers in the wilderness. The Old Testament Holy Place helps us understand our role in worship and our role in the church today. Our local church is a Holy Place with comparable functions, with Jesus’ presence represented by the Bread of the Sacrament. The Word, spoken and written, nourishes the Church, and the Holy Spirit is present in every believer, spreading the knowledge of God through them.

Every House of God is to be a House of Prayer, where the prayers and praises of believers ascend to God as incense. The New Testament teaches that all Christians are a “royal priesthood” able to minister in the same way as the OT priests did in the Holy Place. From the church, prayers arise to God for our needs, those of others, and the work of the kingdom.

  • Thank you for this article. Yes Buddha himself told his students not to follow his teachings blindly . They should analyze his teachings before they accept them. This makes Buddha a rare religious founder, who gives his followers the responsibility to think… May Buddha bless all sentient beings and bring enlightenment to all..

  • …. go to the temple, knee before the divine you believe in, without have a ‘go-between’, say your prayer, seek your blessing, beg for guidance, ask for forgiveness………and depart in peace… along the way enjoyed the surrounding and thanks for what was given, what you had, hoping for better but not demanding for more!!!!

  • Mr Burglinster, thanks for your informative.video. But I like to correct your commentary on the ” Fat Buddha”. He is called Ju lai Fo in Chinese or the Coming Buddha (Metreiyya Buddha in Pali). During this Gautama (Siddharta ) Buddha’s Dispensation, the Meitreiyya was an Arahant ( one of the Buddha’s 84,000 followers during his lifetime who had achieved Nibbana). But because he was so well developed in Metta ( Loving Kindness), women were drawn to his “attractive” nature. But sonce he had vowed to succeed in his search for tge Truth, he decided to make himself fat and ugly to discourage attraction to women. The other Arahant who developed this “Metta” power during the Buddha’s time was Sivali. Both this 2 Arahants are now regarded erroneously as “Patron Saints of Wealth” by Chinese in the case of the Metreiyya Buddha and amongst the Sri Lankans, Thais and O believe other South East Asian Buddhists. PS: For the definition of “Metta”, do read The Karaniya Metta Suuta. May you and Mrs Burtlinster be Well & Happy!

  • Thank you very much for explaining where the fat Buddha comes from. I practice Japanese Sōtō Zen and my teacher once said that apart from the fact that the fat Buddha is a kind of deity in China, it may also come from the last years of Śakyamuni Buddha’s life, when a lot of woman was chasing him and deliberately gained weight to be less attractive. My teacher could not know it, because he’s not a expert in Chinese Buddhism. And it turns out that the fat Buddha is a completely different person from around the 10th century. Thank you.

  • All you, my brothers and sisters, The God of creation has revealed Himself through His servants the prophets, but because of our pride and our unwillingness to receive correction, we reject them. Still yet, in His loving kindness, He has turned His hand away from destroying us or treating us as our sins deserve, and has has delivered to us His only and beloved son to be offered up as the ransom for death. Jesus Christ has given Himself as the perfect sacrifice that atones for the sins of all mankind. At the cost of His own life, He restores us to back unto God The Father. It was because of His faith and obedience that He was raised to life on the third day, just as was written by the holy prophets. He is the true and faithful witness that has become the firstborn umong the dead, therefore shattering the chain of death, once and for all time. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only and beloved son, so that whosoever believeth in Him for the forgiveness of sins, shall not, die, but instead posses Everlasting life. But the one who has not believed, has been condemned already.

  • God lives in our hearts as consciousness which guide us towards destiny. Destiny is in our DNA and reason for happiness all the way until end of life. Brain doesn’t produce consciousness which comes from the cosmic consciousness. We’re part and parcel of same intelligence and energy which governance this whole universe.
