📹 Make a Large Vinyl Wall Decal – How to Cut Larger Than Mat on a Cricut!
I love decorating the walls in my house. I’ve been known to paint them with murals and cover them with photos. But now that I …
Love, love, love this! I don’t think you could have picked a prettier pattern. And you made it look like it went together fairly easily. I think you’re going to be pretty happy with this– and Jason was right. Although I think when you stand back and look at things you really do get a better perspective. Like art. Nice job.
LOVE IT !!! I been looking for a Large picture to go in my bedroom. and there so expensive !! I Need a Famine Room and the M Bedroom is it. ❤ Because after taking care of Mom who passed away from Dementia Me and my Hubby moved in with my 92yearold father who Loves the Manly things lol 😂 everything in this house screams ( Man Cave ) lol 😂 So I just love ❤ LOVE THE FLOWERS 💐 Thank yu sooo much just what i was looking for. xo xo Love you Guy’s ♥ as one caregiver to another ❤ Hang in there I know it’s not easy. My husband is on dialysis and now taking care of Dad who has dementia .
I have been perusal your blog for awhile. usually have something to say about everything. My thoughts about the 2 of you is you are the sweetest couple. You are doing such a good job, and the job is very hard. It must get trying. I can not imagine . The heart tells you one thing and your head knows this is going to be work. You laugh and have fun with it. I think the world of both of you. I am in for the long haul. Joyce
An honest question, if I may? I’ve been enjoying the articles about Jason’s LBD as I work in a chronic care facility, and then I got to browsing around your website! I found your article from while you were ill with Covid, and was quite surprised at how drastically different you looked there. My question is – did you have any sort of face/neck lift in the time since that article?
Dear Jennifer! Thank you so much for this article! I’ve done smaller wall decor projects for kids but I’ve really wanted to make a larger one but didn’t know how! I want you to know that I know you worked hard on this long article so we could see all the steps. Your hard work it truly appreciated! Thank you so much!
I so appreciate this tutorial – your step-by-step-step instructions were a big help! Also made me feel less of a klutz when I saw you getting wrinkles and creases when you were placing the vinyl down so a big thank you as well for showing us the real rather than the ideal. Just a note, I don’t recall where I saw it but thanks to another tutorial, I started using kid’s snap bands to keep my vinyl and wrapping paper rolls closed – I can get them at the dollar store and I can see them easier after getting the vinyl and am now ready to put it away. It has been much easier than rubber bands for me.
Jennifer, your articles had inspired me to reconnect with Cricut. I have one of the Pre-explore early models and liked it. But I couldn’t afford the time then. Then I retired and saw some of your articles. My husband was getting interested in 3-d printer/cnc routing/and laser machines. He found out how similar the programs were and got interested as well. Thanks for the inspiration.
I want to see the B-roll footage on this one, particularly the part where you throw the empty wine bottle at camera guy (greg?) hahaha, very frustrating project obviously, you look exhausted by the time you finish it. I’m not that committed, kudos and BRAVO on completion of the project, I did sit through the article though to absorb the process.
I thought being the article was very long it would loose my interest and I’d be fast forwarding a lot. NOT THE CASE! I found your tutorial very interesting, informative, and was hooked start to finish! Not only did I learn how to tackle Larger Than Mat projects, but all your little tips were extremely helpful. I’m definitely heading out to get me one of those big cutting surfaces you used!
Jennifer, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your articles. I recently had someone else I follow offer a article on how to avoid the top mistakes people make with their Cricut. It was a one hour sales pitch for the “Master” class being sold for over $200. A big waste of time. It did, however, give me an even greater appreciation for your hard work on the in depth articles you produce. Thank you for sharing your time, talent, and insights at no charge. This article in particular was SO much clearer and easier than another one I already watched. Breaking it into the large mats is key. I’ll be investing in large mats for a large stenciling project that’s been on my “some day” list for a couple of years. Thanks again for all you do to help us at home crafters.
Thank you! Although I probably won’t be doing this design. This article convinced me to buy a Circuit machine. I have been looking at them for years. I love that the newest machine cuts fabric. You are amazing keep going with your website. I have now subscribed and I hope to watch many more and learn from you. I absolutely love that you didn’t assume that we know everything. People that are new to this really need the detail.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful tutorial. It’s great to see the potential mistakes that could happen. It’s also great to see how the vinyl sticks to the transfer tape when putting it on, glad to know it’s not just me. Beautiful project, thank you again for all of the knowledge that you share. I recommend you to several others in need.
Great article, buy I would like to see something made with card stock. It would be nice to see how you take the card stock off the mats, how you tape them together to look seamless. I can see how vinyl is easy because it’s adhesive, but a article with card stock and the types of glues and tapes to use would be helpful. And how to stand them up. Again, great article, I wish I had your articles when I first got my machine.
I’ve watched a few of your articles and have always been so impressed with how you present them. I saw that this article was an hour long and couldn’t see myself perusal it all but I was so mesmerized by the entire project and you just kept going, no matter how “sticky’ it got. I really loved it! And I am now subscribing just to support you in all this cricut craziness. =D Oh, I also thought, me creating a large wall decal -yikes!
Hi 👋 I’m new to cricut but I followed your tutorial and it was super easy To understand so thank you !!! Quick question, once I do the sizes up top for large mat, when I chose the first rectangle- I wasn’t able to click on the design within that rectangle – but when I was able to, on the right side, it still says it’s too large to print 🥴🥴🥴. What could I be doing wrong ? I chose 11×22 for the large Mat.
Hello Jennifer! Another wonderful article!! I’m following step-by-step creating a Mario Brothers wall decal for my nephew. I have a question. I’m using a 12″ x 12″ mat as that is the largest I have on hand. I made the rectangles so they would fit my mat. Then, I highlight the image and just 1 rectangle but “slice” isn’t an option at that point. (The slice button isn’t able to be clicked) Any idea why that would happen? I’m thinking it has something to do with sizing but can’t figure it out. Thanks so much for your help…and alllll the help you’ve given me along the way in my Cricut journey! Much love to you!
Have asked this question on a couple of other sites to no avail but, I was given a couple of large window display clings and they were folded I’m trying to unfold them but, I noticed some of the paint’s chipping off so I’m trying to find out if I can replace that paint and what with also the best way to unfold it without messing it up more and from my understanding you are to store by sandwiching the cling between wax paper on either side and rolling it up . any answers or information would be greatly appreciated thank you !
I am trying so hard to follow this, yet I can’t get the slice to work. I’m just trying to break down my logo so I can print it in a 32″ circle for a sign and I get the boxes to slice but the one layer b/w logo inside a circle won’t slice. Watched this article and 10 others 40 times and I still can’t figure it out if anyone can help please do
OMG Jennifer, you did such an amazing job. You have so much patience. I really appreciate that you did not edit anything and showed me how to fix some of the issues which could come up. You are such a real person. I appreciate your expertise and all the hard work. Thank you again. I look forward to trying to attempt to do a similar project. lol
I have geek-out idea for a tool to assist with the smooth removal of giant decal backing. Take two sturdy 1.5″ dowels by 3 feet long and rubberband the ends to create a tensioner ( figure 8 the rubber bands). Starting with the top of the decal taped to the wall, feed the decal sandwich between the rollers all the way up to the place where the decal is taped to the wall. Then begin slowly pulling the backing away using the back roller as a brace as you slide the rollers down with the peel and smooth the decal as you go. This should keep the decal and transfer tape flat so that it doesn’t crease or fold during removal. Still two people, but less chance of the transfer tape folding during the peel.
This lady is on point very professional. I am sure she’s been doing it for a lifetime and now it’s just getting easier for her with technology and so many ideas on the internet. I watch this website for hours it is the go-to website for the question she’s a natural keep up the excellent work thank you.
I am trying to make wall decals for my daughter’s room using the printable vinyl, is this the right material to use. Also I kind of wanted a clear back ground (I really don’t want that white border around my images) but I am unsure if that is the right material or if I can even find that, would you have any advice?
Jennifer I am trying to do this and I get it all aligned. I click on the black space which appears to also select the print in that block but SLICE does not lite up. How are you selecting both black and purple here? Mine wants to select that black square but also the entire print which would be all the purple in your article. ???
Wow! Jennifer, very good demo. My son wants to make stencils to stick on the wall and then paint and remove the stencils. So I am helping him look for ways to do that. I am in the UK so I am hoping some craft store has all the equipment. I was going to ask whether the Cri-cuit (which I think looks like Cry-Kut rather than Cricket!) Design is for Mac but I see you are using a Mac (yes!) & presumably Safari or some other browser works well. Thanks for all your hard work. You must be very experienced at smoothing vinyl with your hand – I have to have a big soft fabric-pad or I end up with creases and bubbles!!
I don’t know one person with flat white walls. Maybe they do on a new house but they always paint over. Your studio walls aren’t white. Maybe don’t assume most have…. also is this washable flat? What about a gloss or satin? This is the first time I’ve seen one if your articles and I’m not trying to be harsh. Just a critique on what made me almost skip your article on a small thing. Thanks for a great article.
GREAT TUTORIAL AS ALWAYS….JUST WONDERING WHAT YOU USED FOR THE BOARD YOU ATTACHED THE VINYL TO….GOOD IDEA TO MAKE THIS A PICTURE THAT CAN BE PASSED ON TO OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS AS THE CHILD GROWS TOO OLD TO HAVE UNICORNS (WELL MAYBE CHANGE HER MIND BECAUSE WHO IS EVER TOO OLD TO FILL THEIR LIVES WITH UNICORNS…LOL) THANK YOU
Hello Jennifer! thank you so much for this, my 7 and 9 year old love this, mostly my 7 year old, two things for the dream big do I need to mirror that? I’m sure I don’t bc I don’t recall you doing it in the article. 2 do you have a LOL doll wall decal? My 9 year old LOVES LOL and I know if I do this one she going to want one of the LOL dolls or all of them or something LOL. I just sing up for your web page and I love it! Thanks so much!!!
Thank you Jennifer for another great article. One of the things I have found is that if you have a wrinkle near the edge of your vinyl you can gently work it out using your scraper. Another thing is that sometimes to get the vinyl from my 24″ mat it is easiest to “drop” your mat- start pulling your vinyl away from the mat, then quickly drop (while holding mat in one hand and vinyl in the other) your hands while gently spreading the pieces apart. I have also found that sometimes I have to scrap the back of a design before peeling it off. Sometimes I will turn the design over to the back- after placing it on transfer tape- and peeling away the backer paper. Probably everyone that has had a Cricut for a while knows these tricks.
Your article is so helpful. I want to put a large tree (33 x 33) on my wall. Do you think if I put it on in sections I will be able to match up the branch pieces? I can’t imagine putting it together before applying to the wall. I am going to add names to make a family tree. My first real vinyl project. lol. Go Big or go Home right?!
Is anyone else having an issue with the DS plugin? I cannot access my Design Space on my laptop because the plugin window will not allow me to even after downloading it. I have completed all of the steps on the help page, contacted and chatted online with cricut and it still keeps coming back. So frustrating! I do love the article and can’t wait to try when I get this issue cleared up.
Coincidentally every time I thought something out loud” Like oh my Gosh I cant this is so slow. two seconds later you said, I’m going to speed this up for you! Then the next time when I was like OK and if I’m not going to be able to do this whole thing because it was just watch this again its to slow and quiet in then” Bam”you start playing music in the background was like OK maybe I can sit through it all he did a great job but it’s just a lot of work. I know you did look a little frustrated and tired. I can’t but thank you for doing this for us
Ecellent tutorial, as usual. You are very easy to watch. I wonder if you could put permanent vinyl for all but the purple layer. Only the purple touches the wall and I’d think the permanent on top would then stay down better than removable and help to hold it all together for a long while…even if little hands are petting it. Only problem I could see would be the difference in sheen but the pros of it sticking better would pay off for me. Especially since I price this project at about $200 canadian just in vinyl and transfer tape.
wow I have never watched you do such a long article. You must have needed a nap after that. I think my take away is great but one thing which was eye opening is even though you are a pro you run into the same kind of things we all do. I love to see how you are problem solving as you go along! I learned a lot – have not done layers yet. Rolling up my sleeves now!!!!
I just purchased my Cricut Explorer Air 2 and am very new to all of this so I really appreciate your articles so very much, especially the hard parts so that I can see that I will not be the only one struggling LOL. I am going to try and attempt to do my company truck decal first and its a long piece so this really helped me see what steps I need to take. Also would you recommend matte finish vinyl for truck window decals as well?
This would take me three days! You are truly a gift to us. Thank you for all of your hard work! I have a challenge for you – what the heck can we make from all of the paper rolls (tubes)that come with each package of vinyl/htv? I hate to throw them away. I don’t want to make candles. Can you think of something creative? I think I have enough of the tubes to build a raft!
I agree with all of these other comments that I am reading…. I appreciate that you showed that you still need patience and perseverance no matter your experience level in creating these projects, as well as talking about how to keep from making the mistakes that can make even basic projects harder (like how to keep things from sticking together, and using painters tape like an extra hand, etc.) I’m about to start some bigger projects, and this is going to make the process quite a bit easier. Thank you.
I have a question, When you peeled all the vinyl first, was that necessary?. Can you cut around your pices firts and then save the rest of the vinyl for other small projects?. sorry for the question. I don’t own a cricut yet, but I’ m perusal all kinds of articles first before I jump on that wagon. I know this this are very expensive… love, Love this project Btw.
Hello, Jennifer. I uploaded an image of a dove from Cricut. I was using Premium vinyl. The process for the dove was to print then cut. After I printed it the ink smudged. I printed another one let it sit to dry for probably 1 hour. It still smudged. Can you tell me what I did wrong. By the way I have an Epson Printer. I ended up using the smudge copy, scribbling pencil marks on the back of the vinyl. Then, I traced the image on a clean piece of vinyl and going over that with a permanent marker.
Thank you, My daughter just opened her Spa. She is a Massage Therapist, in Tennessee. She also works at a chiropractors’ office to doing massages. She has been a Massage Therapist for over 15 years. I want to put her signs on the freshly painted walls . I appreciate you showing me how to do it with the machines I have. Thank you so very much! Ms. Ford
I am surprised you didn’t mention that Cricut says that removable vinyl is only removable in the first 2 years. Something to think about when doing wall art. Also, I used smart removable vinyl to put up Christmas designs (not layered, just single color) on the mirrors. When I tried to take them off a month later, they did not want to come off. That really surprised me. I had to use a hairdryer on the highest heat setting and low airspeed to warm up just a 2 inch area to be able to peel that area back, then use the hairdryer again on the next 2 inches. It was a very slow process. Even using the hairdryer didn’t work the first time I tried it. The time it worked was when I waited until I got out of the shower to try it so there was a little moisture on the glass and the room was a bit warmer (our bathroom has no heat) I’m thinking next time I will put the vinyl on my jeans or shirt first to remove some of the sticky before putting on mirrors.
I am a beginner to the Cricut family. 🥰 I am calling on anyone to help me. I have downloaded a pretty long image phrase (vertical) into my Cricut Design. I plan to apply the permanent vinyl to a painting canvas (white). The issue i have or should I say I am not sure what to next. I moved the image into a canvas
So while perusal this article I want to tell you thank you. I was asked this question not long ago and when I answered I drug out the word suuuuurrrreeee??? as a question, lol. Also, I am so impressed with your professionalism, I was able to notice when you started wishing this project to be over but you kept a smile, explained everything in detail, and even gave your thoughts without losing your cool. Shout out to Greg for helping once again. Lastly, I wanted to say GREAT JOB!!!
Girl! Awesome job! I just want to say three things. 1. I can’t believe how great that looks! I love it. 2. I am not quite brave enough to try something so big yet. I can just see myself trying this, a blonde Lucielle Ball covered in vinyl and tears. And 3. If I had my husband helping me, we would have about four arguments before we got it done.
I am new to the Cricut community and thought this was AMAZING! I was wondering if you could use a mix of permanent and removable vinyl for this project? Like many of the other comments, thank you for not editing out the difficult parts or mistakes. It helps everyone learn how to overcome those hurdles. Thank you for putting yourself out there like that! 😁
Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials! I absolutely loved this tutorial. You are so easy to watch and learn from. Please keep dong these, I am new to the cricut world and I am looking forward to having so much fun ! I would love to learn how to make my own design on to a tee shirt, if you would be willing to show this in a article that would be great. Thank you
Thank you so much for this article. I really appreciate that this project wasn’t all planned out. I usually like tutorials to be perfect and the person to go through without delay but I loved that some of this was real time decision making. So helpful and nice to see that I’m not the only one who struggles to get the backing separated sometimes! lol Thanks again!
Thank you for this! Unfortunately I am still having a really hard time finding a article to show me Step by Step how to make a large Vinyl with my Daughter’s name and Initial with my Explore Air 2. if anyone has found one like that, could you please reply with the link? I would GREATLY appreciate it! I really don’t want to break down and buy it! Lol
