Follow the video tutorial to learn how to use piping tips and make a 3-layer cake decorated with buttercream flowers using your favorite buttercream frosting.
To make a rose with cake icing, fill a piping bag with royal icing and attach a rose tip. Attach a piece of wax paper to a rose nail with a small dab of frosting. Place the wide end of the rose tip on the nail, turn the tip so the pointy parts are vertical, and squeeze the bag as you pull away from the cupcake.
For a petal, squeeze the piping bag to force a short length of buttercream out of the nozzle, twisting the piping nail at the same time. Squeeze the bag and turn the nail to the end of fingers, moving the tip up, then down to form the first petal.

Thanks for the article. I had used that tip before and wondered why i was doing it wrong, turns out I was going from the edge in and not from the middle. So I just have to remember to do the middle first. I have done some swirls before but never anything this nice. Thanks.. this article made it look super easy!!
OH MY GOSH what’s important is that it looks nice, not what flower it is. Who CARES? You just want to be right, like how most humans generally are. Stop frickin arguing. And the 5 seconds? It’s just implying that it can be done FAST. And it WAS done fast. Omg think properly about what’s important here and stop arguing about useless stuff. If you want to use a different tip, go ahead and use your own bloody tip. Stop coming to others’ articles and disturbing them.
Thanks! I’m sure you can see why I don’t read all the comments on here very often. People think if they type it, it’s ok. I think it’s all pretty funny. I frost them faster than 5 seconds when I’m not on article 🙂 Since this was my first time doing a article, to share with a friend how easy it is, who knew it would cause such commotion.
@debio116 I’ve always thought of rosettes as small roses and since these are about three inches across I decided to call them roses, besides everyone who sees them says what pretty roses, no one has ever called them rosettes when I’ve made them. Sorry if you didn’t like my title of them. Happy Baking
No, I am in culinary school right now and my major is baking and pastry. I am studying to become a pastry chef and a rosette is made with a star tip and a rose is made with a rose tip…if you google rosette you will get an image that looks very similar to these cupcakes. I am not looking to argue I am only informing that this is most definitely not a rose in any way, shape or form.
