Renovation Ideas For An External Brick Home?

In Australia, a brick house renovation involves painting the trims, gutters, fascias, and bargeboards of the house to enhance its aesthetics and resale value. Choosing the right exterior design for a brick home presents unique design challenges, and there are many options to consider.

Renovating a brick house’s exterior is an incredible home upgrade that elevates the outside of the property. By choosing impactful elements to serve as a focal point and infusing your design with unique features, there are plenty of exterior home remodeling ideas to consider. Whitewashing your brick exterior can highlight some of your bricks’ texture and color.

To modernize 70-80’s brick homes, consider maintenance, removing exterior fixtures, rendering and cladding, landscaping, paving, and using lime-like dark ash and Dyebrick Charcoal stain to produce grey brick and mortar. Other ways to improve the look of your brick home include cleaning the roof, gutters, paint/replace the railing, and clean up the yard.

To completely transform the look of your brick, consider applying a layer of stucco or render over it. The rendering process can create a strong focal point on the front façade of the house, and you don’t have to render to make it look amazing.

How to update brick exterior without painting?

Bricks can be updated without painting them by pressure washing them, using German Smear or Mortar Wash, staining or rendering, veneer or cladding, adding accents, going green, or sandblasting. While painting is a common method for wood or Hardie board siding, bricks can be more challenging. There are many creative options to breathe new life into your home’s exterior, including adding accents, going green, and sandblasting.

Barry Brown, a remodeling expert and owner of Counter Culture DIY, and Ryan Vaughn, co-owner of San Diego Stamped Concrete and Staining, offer tips on how to update tired, old bricks to make your home look brand new.

Can you reface brick exterior?

Resurfacing over brick enhances the aesthetic appeal of surfaces by applying a new layer or coating, updating color, texture, and overall appearance. It offers a range of design possibilities and is generally more cost-effective than complete replacement, eliminating the need for extensive demolition and disposal of old bricks. Resurfacing is faster than completely replacing bricks, requiring less labor and often completed within a shorter timeframe, allowing you to enjoy the transformed appearance of your brick surfaces sooner.

How do you update a brick house without painting the brick?

Staining brick is a great way to change the color of your brick without compromising its natural look and feel. Stains penetrate the pores of the brick, allowing for a long-lasting, fade-resistant color change. As tastes and aesthetics change, homeowners often wonder how to change brick colors to match their current desires. Instead of using latex paints, there are better ways to change brick colors and ensure that the new color change truly lasts. Here are the top three options available to help achieve the home of your dreams:

  1. Use a stain that penetrates the brick’s pores, allowing for a long-lasting, fade-resistant color change.
  2. Use a stain that is resistant to fading and stains, ensuring a long-lasting and fade-resistant color change.

Is staining brick a good idea?

Is it OK to paint a brick house?

Painting a brick house can be a costly and time-consuming process, as it can trap moisture inside the porous material, leading to mold, mildew, and other damage. Additionally, paint can peel and flake over time, requiring frequent maintenance and touch-ups. Staining brick is a popular alternative, providing a natural, durable, and long-lasting finish that allows the brick’s natural texture and color to shine through. With proper maintenance, staining can last for up to 25 years or more.

There are eight reasons to stain your brick instead of painting it:

  1. Staining provides a more lasting, low-maintenance, and customizable finish that enhances the unique character of the brick.

  2. Staining allows the natural texture and color of the brick to shine through, enhancing its appearance.

In conclusion, staining brick is a superior option for updating the appearance or covering up damage, but it is not recommended for all brick houses.

Does painting exterior brick last?

Painting bricks is a permanent decision that cannot be returned to the original brick front. Professional painters understand that removing paint from bricks can be expensive. To keep the outside brick looking new, repaint it every three to five years, and choose a different color if desired. Brick stain can last for about 20 years or more, depending on the quality of the bricks and their condition.

Proper maintenance can extend the lifespan of a brick building, potentially extending it to hundreds of years. The quality of the bricks used and their condition also play a role in the longevity of the stain.

How to cover brick exterior?

In order to enhance the appearance of an exterior brick wall, one may consider painting it for a fresh look and protection, installing vinyl or wood siding for a new appearance, using climbing plants like ivy or other plants for a natural look, or applying stucco for a textured finish. Such an approach can enhance the appearance of the wall, provide protection, and impart a distinctive character to the space.

How do you make an exterior brick wall look nice?

To add an older, distressed look to your brick walls, mix colors or stencils, whitewash the entire wall, or paint an unusual color. However, be cautious as there’s prep work and paint is difficult to remove. Consider a comprehensive home warranty to cover unexpected repairs and ensure your home’s unique features are well-maintained. An AHS® home warranty offers discounts, including discounts on interior design services through specialists who partner on plans through indoor service and maintenance options. Ensure the right decision is made before starting to create a timeless centerpiece in your home.

Can you restore brick after it’s been painted?

Restoration of original bricks can be challenging, so using a chemical paint remover specifically designed for masonry surfaces is recommended. Consult a professional specializing in masonry surface cleaning and paint removal for satisfactory results. Test the removal technique in an inconspicuous location to gauge the final outcome. ProSoCo Inc.’s Heavy Duty Paint Stripper is a good option, with an alkaline formula and organic solvents for multiple layers of paint removal from masonry surfaces. This slow-working stripper is effective in removing a wide range of paint coatings. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for product application and paint removal.

Can you remodel a brick home?

When remodeling a brick house, it is important to consider the unique design challenges that come with the material. Brick homes have a beautiful presence and have been popular throughout history. However, when remodeling a brick home, there are certain challenges that come with the territory.

Removing brick is fairly straightforward, and you may even re-use the brick you removed elsewhere if it can be removed without crumbling apart. When considering new window openings, it is crucial to factor in the size of your brick to avoid leaving a sliver of brick at the edge of the new opening, as these will invariably crack. Openings sized to hit within half of a brick width are easier to adhere to.

  • The flip house will look incredible. The boys are great helpers. Little Levi is so cute. Years ago I removed many bushes like yours with a pick are and shovel. It was hard work but they were dead and needed to go. My neighbour was worried I would have a heart attack. I miss that hard work now. Keep well all. Enjoy your Valentine’s Day!

  • Ohhh, look at that little peanut. Your baby is adorable and your other two boys are growing so fast and proving to be hard workers. You definitely inspire me to be busier and get more organized. In the spring when the snow is gone I’ll be doing numerous outdoor projects. I can’t keep up with you as I’m quite a bit older but I’m going to do my best. Stay safe.

  • I had to smile at what the boys were doing. Firstly their sterling work removing the cut branches. Then the typical sight of leaning on something perusal someone working. Here in the UK builders often put viewing windows in safety fences so that passers by can stop and watch what is going on. 😊😊 lastly the little one copying Dad when digging out the washing line pole. The look of determination was priceless, foot firmly planted on the shovel to move the earth was fantastic.👏👏👏

  • Removing the large over grown hedge in front of the door and the remaining ouch bushes, and the awning the house looks so much better! I am surprised how improved it looks. I think the color L is the right color. I forgot about the cooling unit on the roof after living there. Crazy., my daughter bought her first townhouse in north Florida and decided to remove popcorn ceiling, never did it before, slipped landed on her foot, no shoes, and dislocated her big toe but she grabbed it, pop it back in place ☹and to ER. Her ceilings are beautiful. Can’t wait for part 3! We aren’t going..take your time! 💗🌴

  • Yall are doing a great job on the flip house! Your husband is a very hard worker who loves his family! Your boys are helpful and they love to help Daddy!😁 I just lost my dad January 18th . He was 81 years old. It’s been really hard! That house is going to be very cute when yall get finished with it!👍👍👍

  • You are such an inspiration with all of your hard work. I’ve been working hard at decluttering. Today’s project was cleaning the garage. My son has his stuff from when he moved out of his house in our garage. We could barely walk thelrough to the door. But what a sense of satisfaction. I love seeing your progress on the flip house.

  • Hannah, question. How do you deal with your hair? I know you have really long hair and from the looks of it it is also very thick. Well I have the same. But damn, it is hard work. Brushing is so painful sometimes and also hard. Yours look so amazing and healthy that I was wondering how you treat your hair. I don’t want to cut it at the moment. Well I do because it is sooo much work, but I love how long it is. Eventho I almost never wear it loose haha. Always in a bun. Thnx for sharing these amazing articles. Love to see the progress.

  • Looking great! You’ve done so much work so quickly!! 💚🏡 Although I can’t help but worry if that giant bush was helping to block the sun everytime the front door opens..and possibly the same idea for the window shade? My dad lives in Green Valley Az and it gets extremely hot when the sun heats up everything it touches..like the front door handle🤷🏼‍♀️

  • Baby Levi is getting so big…. he is so handsome. Getting rid of all the excess plants around the garden and the old clothes line definitely makes a big impact, as well as the cords/cables that where attached to the house, makes it nice and clean. I think the color palette you’ve selected for this house will really give it the massive facelift it needs to make it look updated and clean.

  • Those creamy off-white colors are tricky bc I’ve seen them where they just look dirty. I’m no good at picking colors! I had no idea mesquite thorns were that long! Deadly! Thx for showing a close-up of Levi. Cutie! Boy, Jaylen works so hard! Idk how he can do so much! You, too! How do you have the time or strength to also do projects at your home, too? You need that time for catch-up and resting. Don’t over-do.

  • Hi Hannah 👋, What a wonderful adventure we’re all going through with you and the family. Levi looks very much like Owen when he was a little baby boy 👶 👦 💙. To see the boys growing up and giving a helping hand ✋️ must bring you and your husband such joy. I know that as a spectator, it brings me joy. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story ❤️. Warm thoughts I send your way Raquel 🙋🏻‍♀️ 🙊 🙉 🙈 🌬 🌨 ❄❄👱🏻‍♀️👷🧑🏻🧒🏻👶💕💕💕

  • Beautiful and it’s going to be gorgeous. Love your dream board and it is perfect for the southwest………absolutely fabulous. Please don’t overdo the heavy work as baby is so new and you are still healing. 🙂 Your style is going to be so wonderful and once you get it on the market it will be pristine and people will wish you had two houses like that to sell. Just beautiful………….best of luck. Take care. Blessings!

  • The little brick house is going to be fantastic! It never fails you go at a project gang busters and then you have to wait weeks for the materials to come in. We call that hurry up and wait! Just hang in there, it will all get done and be wonderful! I think your shopping buddy is so stinking cute! Give him a little squeeze from me! God bless you and yours!

  • Love what you want to do with the outside. This is going to be a great little house for someone. What a difference it already has made to get rid of the overgrowth!!!! It makes a world of difference to be able to see the front door! Looks like Levi has picked up the mellow gene. So presh. He looks so much like Jalen already! Love how the boys are such great helpers! Bet you and Jalen appreciate it too! Might have kept the clothesline up because they are very popular right now. Maybe spray painted it but left it. Taking down the popcorn ceiling really improves the interior! Great job!!!
