The article discusses the process of fixing a sagging roofliner in a car, which can be a costly and time-consuming task. One possible solution is to purchase a new headliner with the fabric already installed on it, which is a “ready made” solution that is fairly easy but more expensive. This can be done through four methods: reattaching it with adhesive, applying double-sided tape, securing it to the car’s roof using pins, or utilizing a professional.
The headliner, or headlining, is the fabric that covers the interior of the car’s roof. It is important to inspect the condition of the roof lining frequently and address any sagging promptly. If you notice any sagging, it is crucial to have a new headliner installed by a professional.
Sagging car roof linings can be fixed using glue, double-sided tape, sequin pins, clear-headed twist pins, or by using a steam cleaner and paint roller. A spray adhesive like 3M Super 77 can be used to spray through a small hole and adhere it up with magnets while it dries.
One of the easiest ways to put the headliner back into its place is to use glue, especially if the fabric is sagged partially. However, the short answer is to have a new headliner installed by a professional, as the upper layer on the old one is usually disintegrating and cannot be reattached. Sagging car roof linings can be fixed with glue, double-sided tape, sequin pins, clear-headed twist pins, or by using a steam cleaner and paint roller.

You can also fix it without removing it by gluing it back in place, pinning it to the roof, applying double-sided tape, or using a steam cleaner and paint roller. What is a cloth roof on a car called?
During the 1980s, vinyl-covered roofs were popular in many car lines, but the “aero look” introduced by the 1983 Thunderbird clashed with opera windows and vinyl roofs due to their formal style. Canvas-look tops, also known as cabriolet roofs, gained some popularity. The availability of all vinyl styles declined in the 1990s, but hearse and limousine bodies still have vinyl tops due to their expected style and practical advantage in covering welded body seams when standard sedans are stretched. Aftermarket customizers continue to install vinyl roofs, typically seen on Cadillacs and Lincolns, but can be fitted to virtually any car.
Why is the cloth on the roof of my car coming off?
Extreme heat can cause sagging of the headlining, as it melts glue and causes fabric looseness. Poor waterproofing in cars can also cause water to enter the foam, deteriorating the glue. Drivers with children or pets are also at risk of sagging the headliner. To prevent this, park your car in the shade and maintain good interior and exterior conditions. Avoid scratching or pulling the headlining, as this can accelerate the aging process.
How do you put fabric back on the ceiling of a car?
To fix sagging headliner along car ceiling edges, use glue to spray the loose underside of the headliner and exposed ceiling section. Wait 5 minutes for the glue to become tacky, then press the material back into place. For extra security, spray two coats of adhesive. For peeling sections, stick one section of double-side tape along the underside of the headliner and stick it onto the car’s roof.
How do you stick fabric to headliner?
It is recommended that the fabric be allowed to become tacky before being adhered together. Thereafter, adhesive should be applied to all edges, after which the fabric should be pulled up and over the edge.
How do you fix torn fabric on a car?
To repair a tear or hole in your vehicle’s upholstery, you can stitch the tear, sew the fabric back together if there’s enough fabric, add a piece of matching cloth to fill the hole, use a repair kit for vinyl seats, or invest in custom seat covers. Car seats, sharp tools, drink spills, and pet claws can cause damage to your vehicle’s upholstery. To fix the tear, use a curved upholstery needle and a long piece of matching thread.
After closing the tear, apply a fabric sealant to prevent fraying. Although the repair may not look as good as new, it will prevent further tearing and ensure your vehicle’s upholstery remains safe and functional.
How much does it cost to replace car ceiling fabric?
The average cost to replace a car’s headliner is $500 to $1, 000. As a vehicle ages, the interior headliner often fails due to exposure to outdoor parking conditions. In the southern and western states, many older vehicle owners struggle with this issue. The headliner is the ceiling of the car and is designed to reduce noise and offer insulation. Under the textile surface, a foam insulating material is usually used, with hidden components like audio wires or satellite radio wires. Modern vehicles often have speakers directly in the ceiling, and Acura now installs headliner-mounted speakers as part of its ELS STUDIO 3D sound system.
What is the fabric on the inside roof of a car called?
Replacing a car’s headliner is essential for maintaining a clean and comfortable cabin. The headliner, made of foam and fabric, is attached to a headliner board with adhesive and screws or snaps. Over time, the adhesive can deteriorate, causing the fabric to sag or droop. Accidents like spills and leaks can leave unsightly stains, and the fabric can become torn. To replace the headliner, you need to find the appropriate material for your car, which can be found online specialty shops that can source original-equipment-manufacturer fabrics. This ensures your vehicle’s original look is maintained.
What kind of fabric do you use to replace a headliner?
Royal velvet is a popular selection for automotive headliners due to its capacity to create a flat appearance. However, when applied correctly, it can also achieve a tufted look, making it an optimal choice for upholstery applications.
How much does it cost to fix a sagging headliner?
Fixing up a vehicle can vary depending on factors such as location, model, and expert choice. A four-door sedan typically costs around $100, while SUVs and minivans can cost around $250. Vehicle preferences vary, with some preferring technology, high performance, or a luxurious interior. Maintenance of upholstery can be a hassle, and the cover under the roof or headliner can become saggy or discolored if not taken care of.
Ford, the only remaining American automaker, plans to continue building gasoline-powered muscle cars after 2024, with the 2024 Mustang featuring a new Dark Horse variant that outperforms its GT counterpart. Taking care of upholstery and the cover under the auto’s roof or headliner can help maintain its overall appearance.

I’ve seen articles with people who do it themselves and the glue they use is not really appropriate for the job. I rang a guy who is a professional like yourself who said he had a young guy do it himself using the 3m glue which is not heat tolerant. The inside of a car can get really hot so the lining fell down after a week. Best to leave it to the professionals.
Thanks for the article. I changed the headliner on a Golf this week. The article made it easy. The @$%%$^^ nuts that hold the headliner on are really bad design. I was having trouble getting the screws in, in the end I expoxied the nuts so they would not move around, and the screws went straight in. This is the one big hassle with this job.
