What causes a receiver to fail?
A blown receiver channel can impact sound quality due to factors like power surges, heat, faulty components, improper speaker impedance matching, or accidental miswiring. It can damage or malfunction the amplifier circuitry, causing distortion or no sound. Fixing a blown channel requires visual inspection, diagnostic tests, component replacement, and careful soldering. Preventive measures like using surge protectors, maintaining proper ventilation, and using compatible audio equipment can reduce the risk of channel burnout and ensure optimal receiver performance.
Why is my home theater not bringing out sound?
A common issue with surround sound is a lack of sound, which can be resolved by ensuring sound cables are securely plugged in, all devices are powered on, and the volume and mute controls on the receiver are checked. If the issue persists, the receiver can be used to test and recalibrate the speakers. If the sound is still absent, a new speaker, receiver, or professional home entertainment system repair may be necessary.
To repair sound system balancing, check cable connections between speakers and receivers, adjust settings on the receiver, and if all speakers are working but the balance feels off, recalibrate the receiver using the user’s manual.

What can damage a receiver?
Speaker wires are a common cause of damage to speakers, receivers, and amps. Consumers often believe they need 10AWG-12AWG monster speaker wires for good sound. To prevent damage, turn off the receiver when inspecting the wires and ensure they are securely connected on the receiver and speaker connectors. Trim the wires, twist them tightly, and install the connector tightly. If needed, trim end connections with solder and color code them with shrinking tube material.
Good speaker wire connections are crucial for ensuring no damage to the receiver and quality sound. Cheaper wires may provide the best sound, while expensive ones may cause damage. It is essential to understand the importance of clean and solid connections to avoid damaging equipment. The maximum speaker wire lengths for two conductor copper wires are 4 Ω load, 8 Ω load, 22 AWG, 20 AWG, 18 AWG, 16 AWG, 14 AWG, 12 AWG, and 10 AWG.

Thank you, good article.I was having issues with a surround speaker not working, did a reset and it works. The only thing is after the reset the levels are so low I have the volume at 65 to watch TV and I can not get the Sony to display on my TV to adjust anything threw the arc!? I miss the days of having full control on the front !
After what seemed like two hours of frustration and trying to figure out why my Sony STR-DH750 would not produce any audio at all, I started to research… Took me a while to find this article, but the first solution got it. I did have to reset all the EQ settings and speaker pattern and so forth, but it helped me get it going. Thank you very much for this.
10/10 vid! I have another sony receiver model (STR DH130) and it just turned off while listening to music and making unusual clicking noises. I did this (hold power button when off), waited for the “clearing/cleared” and works fine now. Really weird, but cool to know if it happens again. I guess this seems like a general “reset option” for sony receivers/amps. Probably works for a lot of models. Edit: Your vid was my first result on google 😉 So a lot of people clearly seem to like this vid.
New subscriber here. Have owned my Sony 7.2 for about a year. I don’t use it to switch article feeds but merely play the audio from my Sony TV via optical audio interface. I am having clicks and might just try your suggestion. Also I am trying to focus audio toward the back of the room more and am looking for tips on that as well. Thanks again for your article. All the best.
Thank you for posting this article. My STR-DH1050 would stop making sound at random intervals and finally wouldn’t stay on at all. Stopped using it for a month or two. Tried it again for a few minutes yesterday and it worked. Then I found this article and tried the factory reset and it worked all day yesterday. Thanks !
I had an issue with intermittent rear speaker sound loss even with test tone it sometimes worked and sometimes not, i have model STR-DB930 and it went into demonstration mode and reset to factory and its working perfectly now. Lucky i came across this article because i was about to buy a Denon instead for 500 quid. Misses would of killed me this close to christmas 😂
I have the 190 series. I’ve resetted mine so many times because it would just power off constantly, and still having issues. I think it’s time to junk it because I’d rather pay for a new one (with a DIFFERENT BRAND) than to pay more just to fix the issue since I’m not a fix-it guy. Sony is starting to piss me off with their products lately as of December 2022. The covid crap and overseas shipment issues don’t help either! Unless there’s another fix you or anyone else out there knows about that would be great. But I did all the steps from other repair articles out there on YT to no avail. ☹
Thank you thank you thank you!!!! I feel asleep last night and my girlfriend tried to turn off the reciever and tv by pressing the buttons on the remotes over and over and over again. At work today I got a call from her saying the tv had no picture and she couldnt figure out why. With your help resetting the reciever did the job. I try to take her through everything, and I mean everything, I do so she knows what to do if I were to die or something. Speaker wire, connections, hdmi, ps5, roki, etc etc etc. Anyway thank you so much you saved me a huge fight and a huge headache. You are awesome my friend!
I have this exact receiver and I have been having issues for almost a year where the system will start turning on and off. It will be playing/streaming audio or article and turn on and off over and over again until I pull the power plug. It will happen on both blue tooth and through HDMI . I have removed rewired the speakers to be a more secure/clean connection, I’ve removed the speakers to start narrowing down if it is the speakers or not. It keeps happening. It started shortly after the warranty expired. As always with today’s products.
Hi. I just moved, and when I set my sterio back up, my rear surround speakers stop working after about 10 mins. If I turn it off+ back on about 10 mins later, same thing happens. What do you think? Also, if I reset it by holding power button down, will that reset all of my custom settings(treble, bass…)?
Hey I used to pair withe Bluetooth al the time and have all the same issues listet above. Now only thing I can do is to disconnect everything and do a clearing again. but stil dont work, i wonder if i change the mn2488 p power transistor or it will work or not ? or is it something els i have to change i dont know parts are hard to get in the EU 😔 i have a str-dh590
The receiver worked fine for the first couple of days. But now The article signal from my Xbox keeps cutting in and out from receiver. If Xbox is directly hooked up to TV it works fine. I did use the same HDMI cable for both previously mentioned scenarios. I cleared using the first method and went through setup thinking it was fixed but once I choose any input from receiver it keeps going in and out of signal.
I have and old dell laptop and when i connect it to my receiver with and hdmi cable and it pounds. love it. but got me a new dell laptop and i use the same hdmi cable but my sound sucks. it just seems like its holding back on blasting my music. like if i have a filter but ive done so much that i’m still frustraded that i cannot fix. someone help
I will try this soon. My issue is that i just hooked this up and the only time it shuts off is when i play a movie or tv from my computer that i downloaded. It will play anything internet related no problem. But when i try to play a downloaded file, it will shut off completely. Ive never seen this before. I hope this works.
My 590 suddenly started spontaneously lowering the volume control to “minimum.” My wife, the chronic TV viewer in our household, started reporting this when she watched YouTube via our Roku unit but not the other programs. Not only did the volume control turn itself down to minimum, but it refused to budge from that value through the remote control or even when I manually tried to increase the volume with the “big knob.” I just tried your software reset and I’ll report back if it works or doesn’t. Thanks.
Hey, the issue I’m having is that my right speaker isn’t outputting. I know it’s not the speaker, because I switched them both around and same thing, the one now on the right wasn’t working, and the one now on the left was now working. Replaced all the speaker wire too, and nothing. I tried your three fixes and unfortunately nothing has worked 🙁 any suggestions?
