How do I figure out how to design a room?

Room layout is a crucial aspect of interior design, impacting both the appearance and functionality of a space. It is often the most time-consuming aspect to perfect, especially when dealing with awkward shapes or dimensions. To create a layout that works for you and your lifestyle, start by detaching yourself from past layouts or estate-agency or house-developer plans. Starting from scratch allows you to focus on what works best for you. To begin, map out an empty room using floor-planner software, which can be free or even turn 2D plans into 3D models. You can also use traditional methods like paper, a ruler, and a pencil.

Focus on creating a layout that is functional, visually appealing, and practical for daily use. Start by mapping out an empty room using floor-planner software, which can be found online or in paper. Remember to consider traffic flow, sight lines, and bring items in from the walls to create a visually appealing and functional space.

Organizing your bedroom closet can double your space by donating clothes you don’t like, don’t wear, or don’t fit well. Adding storage bins and baskets for seasonal items and accessories can also utilize wasted space. Eliminating clutter and disorganization can lead to a peaceful night’s sleep.

Daryl Traver, owner of Oasis Organizing, suggests using overlooked areas in an apartment bedroom and closet. Storage ottomans at the foot of the bed serve dual purposes, storing extra bedding, shoes, and a place to sit and get dressed. Implementing under-the-bed storage is also important, with furniture sliders under bins and crates for easy access.

Streamlining your closet is crucial, especially for one-bedroom apartments with limited closet space. There are numerous ways to streamline your closet and make it easy to navigate. By giving everything a home, making it functional, and keeping clutter down, you can maintain an organized room in a small space.

  • Nice, but not good to have things over the head of the bed- especially heavy things or things that can fall. How many times will the student hit their head on that shelf? Can the bed scoot to the other wall? If not, put a bookcase (attach wheels or slidey thingies) between the other wall & the bed- backwards. Flat end is the headboard. Store seldom-used things on the shelves. To obtain the stored items, roll or slide the bookcase out & in. Thank you.

  • The problem with the bookcases over the headboard is the person will not be able to lean back on the headboard due to not enough room for their torso, and will hit their head getting up in the morning. I might have tried the desk under the window and made the bed a daybed on the long wall with bolsters on the wall side, if it would fit.

  • This dorm is way better than the norm, but then this is Canada and not the US. I feel like most college dorms have bulky ugly plain wood furniture you are not allowed to paint or take out of the room. But then maybe it’s like Europe and it’s not really assigned dorm housing like the US it’s more of a type of rental apartment
