I’ve been using rain-x for almost 3 years since I started my auto detailing business….I’ve never had a issue with the haze. Your method may work but you compromise the longevity of the product by washing it immediately with soap. You must let the rain-x properly cure to ensure a long lasting hydrophobic effect. There is science behind the directions on the bottle…use them😂
GUYS If it streaks after the application, it’s not because you are not buffing it… It’s because the glass was contaminated. You should either use claybar or steelwool to decontaminate before rainx. After that, you can buff dry, buff wet, or even rinse it off it will WORK WITH NO STREAKS. The only goal is to remove the oily residue. The dry buff method is very long and tiring, and the new rainx bottle suggest wet buffing which is 4x time faster.
One very small spray, or a few drops of preferably distilled water on your towel is all you need to remove stubborn streaks if they occur. Applied correctly in appropriate conditions you should not be having streaking issues. You are likely using too much product and/or trying to remove it before it has flashed. I do use glass specific microfiber towels, but even without them I rarely needed a removal aid. Immediately scrubbing with soap and/or using a hose to rinse freshly applied coating off the glass will reduce effectiveness and durability. The product directions are there for a reason.
Dude, if you use a detergent to clean the window, you’re dissolving the RainX from your car’s window… RainX is a polar solution and it’d get dissolved in the soap… You’re not wiping all of it off (prove that your method works), but this way you’d have to spray it more often than others, because every time you remove (wash) a significant amount of the applied solution.
It says to apply with a SMALL piece of cloth. Using a big cloth (or paper towel) is very wasteful. Also let it dry to cure before removing the haze, that way it comes off in almost one pass, especially using clean microfibre towels. I’ve used it on all my cars since 1979, and have never seen anything better, providing you follow the instructions.
I detail for a living and can honestly say that this is completely WRONG! You are wasting your product my friend. You are supposed to spray it on, let it dry to a haze (becuase it’s a coating), THEN wipe it off with a plush microfiber towel. If it doesn’t remove with ease then dampen your towel and remove.
Ive been using Rain-X for a couple weeks now. It works great during the day, no hazing, no streaks, no issues. My problem is at night when there is less light and its raining and the wipers are working. With each swipe, it creates haze which goes away after a few seconds. But if its raining hard and I need the wipers to work fast, there is no time for the hazing to disappear, which makes it hard to see at night. The window is crystal clear when its dry, the hazing just happens at times mentioned above. Does this mean I didn’t clean it well enough after applying it?
Good article and appears easier though it’s a bit overkill and counter productive. Now you would be having to finish washing the car properly and drying it. Or you don’t and likely incur waterspots, which is not mearly annoying. You could use a damp rag, no soap after the rain x cures. It takes time to cure or it cannot fully bond and won’t work as well or long. Better is to apply directly to an applicator not the window as the instructions say. This over application is decreased and wipe off is easier.
Hi, great article but, I have a few questions. 1) What do you do to the glass after you hose it down? Do you squeegee it, dry it with a paper towel/microfiber towel, or just let it dry on its own? 2) Would this method work if say, I applied the rain-x to a haze on the windows of my vehicle before going through a car wash? (For some people who don’t have instant access to a hose) 3) Would this still work even with hard water? 4) Could I just use a spray bottle filled with luke warm water to spray the rain-x haze off the glass? (Again, for those who do not have instant access to a hose) 5) What type of soap would be ideal to give this type of result in the article without totally washing away the rain-x? Some soaps are stronger than others.
All the guy is sayin is that is a quicker way to apply it. Yeah it may 10 min from start to finish, but buffing ur windshield, back window, all 4 door windows and side mirrors, will take at least an hour and a whole lot of buffing which will tire your arm out! The guy is just making a article describing what works best for him And In a timely manner. He’s only talking about skipping a few steps to applying RainX not skipping a few steps on life threatening surgery! Lighten up on the guy and quit taking life so serious.
This “shortcut” doesn’t work. Notice in the article that both front and rear windows have water droplets after rinsing. Those droplets don’t form on windows with properly-applied product. The soap rinse removes the oily-wax protection. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for car windows and shower glass. It works and the effort is well worth it.
Hello Everyone . Think about this: You have Rain-x on you windows and it rains or you go through a car wash or you use your wipers. What happens to the rain-x on the glass??? Nothing… Rain X stays on the glass through all of that and will last for MONTHS. I am telling you, Just apply the RainX and then you can either hose it off or use a light sponge… yes, with a little soap if you want. TRY IT. YOU WILL SEE I AM 100% CORRECT….
These Rain-X products work really well, both the rain-repellent and the anti-fog. I’ve tested them on my Shoei XR 1100 visor (latest article on my channek) – the rain repellent worked well, I could see a noticeable improvement in the size of the water droplets and the way they bead, but the anti-fog was absolutely spot on, no fogging whatsoever.
youre doing it all wrong………..buy rainX in the small bottle……apply it with a paper towel then buff haze off with damp cloth then repeat a 2nd coat and buff off again with damp (almost dry) cloth………..the spray pump is just a glass cleaner with some rainX in it which you use to clean glass weekly or whenever……….you must always apply the small bottle rainX with 2 coats first……..also never get it on paintwork or plastic………….its all in the instructions if you read the labels.
That’s not a good method. I have been using this stuff for years and the absolute perfect way is apply in circular motions with a microfiber cloth then buff it off with an oribital. Takes only a few seconds, no mess, no water and it comes out PERFECT. Will also last a-lot longer. I use a Pro-elite cordless oribital.
you dont know how to use it, or you pour too much. use the turtle wax rain repellent, about 2 times upside down to the tissue amount, apply on half windscreen & leave it, and use old news paper to clean the haze, its shine like diamond . for new apply, you need 3 days – 5 days once . after 6 times you apply it, you might 1 month/2 week once to re-apply . within this period if result not great, just clean your screen, its affected by dust or grease water is the enemy of polish or rain repellent, the way you teach its just shortern the effect.
OHHHHH my goodness!!! I did my religious application of the almighty Rainex…and this time I bought the “Anti fog” bottle too. I swear by this product, and not ONLY for my vehicle windows, but for every other piece of glass in our home. Idk WHAT happened 2 days ago and this time I’ve got the WORST “smearing and streaky mess” I’ve ever tried to drive with!! It’s so bad I’m having to drive 10 or more miles under the speed limit bcuz of the HORRIFIC mess this application left on my windows! I’ve been mortified not knowing how to get this mess I made…off!!! Thankfully, this was my first “hit” on how to fix the smeared mess I made or Rainex and I made!! It’s getting ready to snow and our temps are going down by the hour and I MUST get this mess straightened out. Safety is the biggest reason I use this amazing product! I’ll be back tomorrow and hopefully having great success of simply washing especially my front windshield. I really hope this water and soap method works…wish me luck, and TY for such an easy remedy of what I encountered ONLY this time in 25 yrs. Doesn’t the Rain-X bottle say to sprinkle the glass with water and wipe it if you have trouble getting the haze off? It used to… I assume it still does. I’ve been using the water-off method with Rain-X since I started using it 20+ years ago. I’m surprised more people don’t know this trick. If I’m sneaking an application in between rain storms and I know it’s going to rain before I drive the car, sometimes I’ll just apply, then let the rain rinse the residue off. Works fairly well as long as the storm produces more than just a light sprinkling.
LOL Lazy,,Elbow grease is whats called for,,its a Window treatment not windex.. I have used the product for 30 years, I have experimented numerous times and the buff makes the product last 3xs longer.. JUst like the bottle says you can use water but he results are not going to be as intended. So..yeah, Wax on Wax off, shortcuts are for the lazy and ya might as well just buy the rain x washer fluid so you dont have to get out of the vehicle. XD
Very informative article! I flat out refuse to install any coating on windshields for safety reasons! I will do the other car glass but never the windshield. I’ll explain. Had a bad detail shop install a coating on my windshield and after almost a year it’s been awful, I think it was gtechniq. I tried razors, steel wool, sanding with 400 grit sand paper, ceriglass with a rayon pad, clay bar and brake cleaner. NOTHING removed that coating and my windshield even after sanding it still had that damn coating. Detail shop botched the coating and refused to remove it. So now I gotta spend $800 for a stupid $100 coating that doesn’t work 90% of the time because my windshield needs replaced. In my opinion these glass coatings are all dangerous and I won’t ever use one at least not on my windshield. Just my experience.
When you showed the side by side of treated vs the side with it removed, it kind of looks like the side without rainex would be safer. It didn’t have that hazy look to it. Is rainex a good entry level product? I don’t want to apply it if it will haze up the window like that though. Or maybe that’s just because you had the car stationary and it would be fine viability under normal driving conditions
Sooo… not quite related, but we’re trying to sell our john deer riding mower, and my son took it upon himself to ‘detail it’. He put rain x on the hood and it’s soooo messed up. Has a light colored, irregular, waxy build up on it now Any suggestions? Dudes coming at 5pm tomorrow to look at it… plus I don’t want my husband too pissed off
I have a hard time removing wax or sealants from my class… In the past I’ve used drying aids and the film it leaves doesn’t clean up. In certain sunlight, you can see the haze..Drives me crazy(short trip)… Regular window cleaners or IPA’s don’t seem to help … I may need to polish like you are doing here… Can I use a regular polish and foam pad or do I need a dedicated product like Ceri?
