It seems more likely that Mars started out like Earth but was not about to maintain it due to the lack of a large moon. Earths moon creates the tidal forces and generates tremendous amounts of hear through friction in the Earth’s core. This heat is what creates the convection that intern generates the Magnetosphere.
Maybe as we drift above the galactic plane the core is re-excited. The planets must radiate more heat than they adsorb from the Sun due to heat from the cores. This helps drive the rain cycle for planets like Earth. Maybe Mars does not have enough core heat to drive full genesis, so only minimal waters and flora would emerge. Less density invites to drill and develop projects underneath the surface; used energy/heat and oxygen wouldn’t leave ‘out of grip’ this fast. With lighter materials in its core, and no solid central core, the magnetic field would have allowed a great deal more of just ordinary emissions from the sun to hit the planet surface. Long ago man lived on Mars. They destroyed the ecosystems and recognized these mistakes dedicated a lifetime in starting life new on currently uninhabitable earth. Mars will gradually become more and more active, eventually large deep ridges will occur all over mars surface, releasing trapped water, lava and gases, giving mars its oceans and atmosphere again. I believe people can live in a huge polymer inflatable bubble (1atm pressure), reinforced by glass and metal fibers. This can provide huge space of near earth environment to the first visitors of Mars, and this lightweight shell will be easier to send it far there. If magnetism protects human life, then might the installation of ultra strong magnets can solve this problem.
If mars had a protruding magnetic field at one time it probably disappeared when the water disappeared also, this is because water on the planets surface will release a gas in sunlight adding to the total size of the atmosphere, a larger gas atmosphere will draw out the magnetic field into the gas, so when the water disappeared also the magnetic field disappeared back into the planet as the atmosphere shrank due to losing it’s surface water, so the field is still there it is just inside the planets core. I would have put electric motors on the points of the solar panels where they meet up at the centre. When the top gets covered send a rotate signal and turn them 180°. Afterwards bottom becomes top and a fresh clean surface is exposed. With a bit of luck the dust underneath falls off. Why NASA didn’t fix a cheap wide decorator’s paint or paste brush onto the arm also puzzles me considering the cost of the mission. How about putting someone from the US TAX OFFICE onto NASA’s design team? That way the guy who takes money teaches the high paid scientists how to save money by making the missions last longer.
