When I resigned with them after I a break….with 75 A reviews…they never told me they were now owned by Home Advisor..It;s a fraud and false advertising…but told me the improvements they made were going to make my business easier to get jobs…but all I got were tire kickers and window shoppers..for three months I got no work so I cancelled my agreement…The sales rep was a bs artist who lied and deceived me with false claims just to get some money out of my pocket… Used to be a great company…way better than service magic… I should of checked out the recent complaints against Angie’s before deciding to sign..worst part I lost a bundle of money due to having to pay an early termination fee.
I just watched this article, very good insight… I have been with AL for 8 years, I just canceled with them. I own a roofing company in Springfield, MA. I was speaking $1,000 a month and getting about 70 calls a month. When the company that owns HomeAdvisor bought Angie’s list I was getting 10 calls a month for the same money. I think in your situation they screwed your because of the negative articles you posted on HA… shame on them bro, I hope Karma catches up to them… Now I’m left trying to figure out what the best form of advertising is for me. If you happen to read this let me know what works best for you? I’d appreciate the insight! The name of my company is Brodowski Home Improvement, you can check out my profile on AL…. I’ll never do business with them again, very disappointed!!!
I’m with you. Signed up with Angies list earlier this year. Was getting good lead generation until I recieved a phone call from Home ADVISOR. I told Home Advisor rep I heard very bad things and had seen bad reviews for home ADVISOR so i was just going to stick with Angies list. My Angies list leads dried up overnight. Literally only continued getting calls from telemarketers and scammers. When i called angies list and complained, one of their reps told me and admitted that home advisor were “partners” with angies list and another rep told me that home advisor owns angies list. Thats not the contract i signed so i got a lawyer. I will update you and let you know how it turns out
I signed up 1 year contract so 15 days before the contract expiration, I contacted them saying I didn’t want to renew. I must have called 7 times and they never called me back so I called my credit card company to not allow them to take the money out. Sure enough they tried. The manager finally called me and I told him again I did not want to renew. Every day still they try to take the money out. I hate this kind of business practice.
Normally if your in a nice neighborhood and you do a great job word of mouth will bring more business, chain reactions per say,so overall contractors should count on themselves to be successful without internet platforms this is why clients should be paying for our information after all most small businesses can’t afford to float money on a chance we get a lead
I’m a numbers nerd so yeah… here we go. That company would get a C rating @ 75.7%. Yours would in fact, be a B rated company @ 85.76% Regardless they are still a shit company. Lies me into re-signing last week under the promise that this was nothing like home advisor and I could just pause my leads indefinitely, ” like a light switch”, she said. My on boarding last called me the next day and informed me this was home advisor with yet another re-naming and I could not in fact do that. That was my issue is this was a fallback, or plan B if I didn’t have enough of my own leads. They bank on me forgetting to re pause my leads and shooting leads I cant get to due to my schedule. Shiesty place.
So I see what you are talking about for a larger company but if you shrink that down to a company that started this month and willing to put $500/month into it. What do you think? I am on thumbtack and it’s average in my area. most stuffs far out but I have had 250 views in 10 days. I have closed 1 deal on a metal roof. What I need to make back a month is about 6k very small compared to others I think. My response time on thumbtack is also 6m so I’m sure that helps me out.
They probably excluded you for exposing them. As a former employee of Angie’s List, can tell you that the company DOES NOT take constructive criticism much less take valid concerns seriously. They’re not interested in improving their predatory business model. Everything you describe about how Angi’s List used to be is completely foreign to me. Your articles about HomeAdvisor IS EXACTLY how Angie’s List operates. Mantra was “you gotta pay to play, you can’t sell you can’t stay.” Contractors do have to pay for more exposure on the first page. Sales reps are given ludicrously unreasonable sales quotas every two weeks. Whether or not you have a job next week is dependent on whether or not you met sales quotas the previous week. Literally every previous advertiser I’ve spoken to that was with Angi prior to the merger has complained about a huge decrease in leads, increase in monthly price, and leads going to HoneAdvisor to sell and resell Ad nauseam. I participated in an internal investigation about manager misconduct and 7 days later, they wrongfully terminated me. They retaliate are when exposed. Absolutely. Doubt they’ll sue you. You can actually sue them for violating the Consumer Review Fairness Act of 2016, for retaliating for giving your honest personal opinion about your experiences as a consumer. Probably why their attorneys never got back with you. Afraid of another lawsuit. Angie’s List has 2 class action suits going on right now that I know of and then HomeAdvisor is in litigation with the FTC.
I think the best way to put these platforms out of business is to just advertise our businesses online without them maybe knock them like Angie to bottom of the list for contractors sort of like bringing back the yellow pages why should contractors pay these platforms when it’s the clients that should be paying them for Our information
Totally agree with everything Dimitry said here. This last year I took over my families business of over 30 years that didn’t even have a website. 6 months in to committing to digital marketing we now get about 50% of our leads from Google. Having a solid modern website that ranks well organically with a respectable amount of 5 star reviews has generated us a steady flow of quality leads week in and out. If I was a better salesman we’d be doing a replacement every day lol
Can you help or advice? I saw your articles on Angi’s List and had no idea until they are big time scammers! And myself and my business are paying for it which is not right. I am a Remodeling company and thought Angi’s is where to go. They promise a certain amount of leads and promise their be 10 lead money back guarantee but set you it up so you can get it. I got fake leads (people that didn’t even sign up nor doing any projects) leads being sent at midnight-12:30am, even 3:30am and leads outside of business hours. No on boarding call to hep how it all works . To add, in 27days only one call was legit . Now not honoring the 10lead guarantee and no refund. Do you have any options, ideas, or help. This company needs to be shut down !!!
Knocking doors old school after a storm is a art I have gotten three contracts a day Canvassing neighborhoods getting us in the door First thirty days sell every day your sales people at worst will have thirty contracts. Fifteen years fifteen years thirty days sixty contracts ten good salesman do the math and then referrals signs in the yard Problem is sales people depending on Facebook Angie’s leads which the same lead is given to every roofing company fact done it did it payed for it Love most of your advice buttttt some I see your marketing good for you I do the same. Advice get of your but and go old school knock doors
I couldn’t agree more. It’s amazing to me how many customers call and thank me for answering the phone. Like seriously? That should be standard but it isn’t here. So many people say we’re the first company that answered the phone or got back to them with an estimate. The only money we’ve spent on advertising so far is a truck wrap and business cards. We have a Google listing and we’re getting about 3 organic calls a day from that. I update the page often which got us to the top of the list when someone searches “roofing” or “gutters”. We also have a Yelp and Facebook page and a website we are working on. Great topic. Thanks Dimitri.
I started perusal you’re website because my roof is old, but not leaking. I wanted to be an informed buyer. I get several door knockers each season because they see my roof is original, (23 years, asphalt shingle). They all offer “free inspection”. I ask them “What do you think the inspector will say?” They tell me they don’t know. they get paid for referrals, not jobs. Since I started perusal your website, I’ve found your advice to be on point, not just for the roofing business, but any business| I am a business owner too (not roofing), and I think you’re advice applies to any business. I will continue to subscribe even after my roof is replaced because I value what you are putting out there. Keep up the good work. Potential, (and existing) business owners need to hear these hard truths!
Some time i agree with Dimitry that to rank high and be seen you have to use homeadvisor on Title, no problem with the idea that he run system that give you free leads with only $1.30 Cent per day to have full page at Directorii. my friends roofers if you don’t have $1.30 to advertise and optimize your Profile. Yes my friend Roofers Shut it down file for bankruptcy, dont even become a viewer due to fals our analytics. and there is some times that i dont agree with him. that is my opinion, due to with the same license you can do multiply things, if you have the roofing insurance it cover all the rest below 7ft Roofing, gutters, masonry, chimney, driveway, patios, also you can do entire Home just Sub the plumbing and electrics, that’s why i don’t agree wrap the Cars dont mean a thing and have folders etc look like chinese Food door hanger that is complicated menu. I do understand the article content what is about. Roofer are in trade mentality that i pay big buck and i get so many fake leads. and when you tell them hey les than $1 a day or you Charge $1.30 include 3% witch is les than pinouts. yes MAN i do understand that this ppl dont update the profile due to the bosses hire wrong ppl for the job. and yes man i do understand that some time i have feelings to throw all of them out and use all the leads my self to gow back in the roofing business. and if that happen it will be 8 years apart from the capitation. will donate them an AMG Wheelbarrow
