New driver, i got my license the day a blizzard happened and was panicking because I thought the normal lights were the headlights and the car did it itself, I rotated the knob because I couldn’t see and behold, I could see much better. I don’t see the sense in running headlights when it’s too bright for them to make a difference. Parking lights are more than enough to make your car noticable. Running headlights during this time just makes more glare for other road users, and reflects up off the rainy road into other drivers eyes. In the UK, people are going through an obsession of driving with headlights on at the slightest sign of a cloud in the sky, and it’s very annoying. Kind of like the 2010s obsession of driving with front fog lights on, which was also pretty stupid.

I mean what? I thought that the daytime lights are only the LED like lights only in the front… Perhaps thats only Called like that in my country. And the other Daytime lights (2nd position on the switch) are called parking lights here (small light bulbs in the front and the back red tail lights). But when u turn on the normal lights, not all lights turn on – just regular and parking ones. U also got brake lights, reverse light, fog lights, high beams, turn signals, licence plate light…
I’ve always thought of daytime lights as the minimum lights that should be on. But on the front, they’re not all created equally. I usually just drive with my low beams on 24/7. They’re not that bright in the sun which I usually drive and they can be seen through a glaring sun. I think they invented DRL or dumbass running lights if you ask me, because no one uses the daytime lights like they’re supposed to. Way too many times I’ve mistaken a moving car for a parked car because it didn’t have any lights on. It also seems you can turn DRL lights off so it’s like whats the point.
Is there a mistake in the article or is it just me? The control labelled ‘Daytime running lights’ in the article is actually “Parking lights’ aka ‘sidelights’. They are designed for parking in a dark place so you can still be seen. Day running lights are separate and you usually don’t have a control for these – they’re on when the car is on. I think the confusion is because before day running lights became a thing, some people liked to use their sidelights like running lights to be visible during the day.
I never had an issue with my previous cars, never had to question which lights to use, but my new one has the auto feature and it has been CONFUSING me for the last YEAR because I couldn’t remember what the symbols were in my other cars so I didn’t know which one to use. OMG I’ve been using Fog Lights as day time driving and turned on at night driving. I have been using Hi beam at night. I should only be using Hi beam when driving at night when there is not pole lights,and when no on coming traffic on opposite direction. Must have a good at old Road Codes from now on. So many useful tips in it.
