Is It Possible To Weld The Inner Yruck Door Handle?

In this video, the expert discusses how to repair and replace a broken worn-out interior door handle in a 1995 GMC Suburban. This is a common problem with GMT-400 trucks nowadays. The video explains that you can use an adhesive (JB Weld, etc.) to mend the handle, or it will snap off after a few uses. If an adhesive will work, what brand would be best?

To get the door open, you may be able to put the window down and use a Slim Jim to pull the rod inside the door to let the door latch activate. Once the door is open, bust it the rest of the way off and pop the door open through the hole the handle left in.

The experts at 1A Auto show how to replace a broken or snapped interior door handle on your 07-13 Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra. Step 1 involves removing the door panel, prying off the trim piece inside the door handle with a flat blade screwdriver, and replacing the broken door handle. Inspect the door latch and replace if not working. Check the door for proper operation and reinstall the door panel.

The video also discusses the importance of adhesion in repairs, as the strength depends on the fit-up of the break area, cleanliness of the joint, and surface area of the joint. JB Weld is suggested as a possible solution, but it is important to use good welders and replate the part when needed.

The video concludes by suggesting that most repairs are just removing bad parts and replacing them with good ones. The expert suggests using JB Weld as an alternative, but it is probably not suitable for such a small job.

What is the best glue for broken plastic handles?

Epoxy and MMA adhesives are strong and effective for bonding plastics due to their chemical reaction between hardener and resin. Infinity Bond MMA 500 is the best structural adhesive for plastic bonding, bonding difficult plastics like Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP) better than most available products. It has a 4-5 minute open time. Infinity Bond Rubber and Plastic Super Glue Cyanoacrylate is the best super glue for general purpose bonding, especially when using rubber substrates.

It is suitable for product assembly, general repairs, and O-ring bonding. Infinity SuperTAC 500 is the best hot melt glue stick for plastic bonding, offering good heat resistance and bonding to various plastics like PP, PE, PET, and PVC. These adhesives outperform many other plastic bonding glue sticks while maintaining a cost-effective price per pound.

What kind of glue to use on broken door handles?

Loctite Threadlocker Blue 243 is a recommended adhesive for fixing door handles and threaded fasteners that require occasional disassembly. It holds up to normal shock and vibration, protects against rust and corrosion, and is suitable for stainless steel, plated surfaces, and most common metal fasteners. For delicate knobs and decorative fixtures, Loctite Threadlocker 222 Low Strength is recommended, offering less hold for screws made of softer metals that might shear if a stronger adhesive is applied.

Is J-B Weld as strong as a real Weld?

J-B Weld is praised for its easy-to-mix adhesive, smooth application, and tenacious bond. Tests show that its bond strength often exceeds the material to which it is bonded. A PVC pipe was sawed in half to create a roughened surface, then glued back together with J-B Weld. The sample was impossible to break with hand pressure but snapped off easily with locking pliers. This bond is strong enough to support a small sign for indoor use, but the lack of bonding surface cannot withstand the torque applied by locking pliers.

Is J-B Weld as strong as steel?

Epoxy is a thermoset plastic that cannot be melted or reformed. It is formed when two chemicals are mixed together, causing a reaction that turns them from soft putties or syrupy liquids into a hard plastic. Despite being under experimental development for over 100 years, it wasn’t successfully developed for commercial purposes until the late 1940s. J-B Weld was founded in 1969, producing a simple epoxy putty used in truck repair. Although the claim that epoxy is “tougher than steel” is exaggerated, it is versatile and can be applied by amateurs.

To test the adhesives, a sample was prepared by roughening the bonding surfaces with 60-grit sandpaper, rinsing them with clean water, letting them dry, and mixing the adhesives according to the package directions. The samples were then applied to the epoxies and left to cure for 24 hours. Epoxy is a versatile material that can be applied by amateurs and offers numerous benefits for repair purposes.

How strong is J-B Weld on plastic?

PlasticBonder™ is a rapid-setting, two-component urethane adhesive system that provides robust, enduring repairs on thermoset, carbon fiber composites, thermoplastics, coated metals, concrete, and other substrates. The product is supplied in a 1:1 mixing ratio and, once mixed, sets within 15 minutes. After 30 minutes, the adhesive can be sanded. The tensile strength of the adhesive is 3770 PSI, it sets to a tan color, and it cures to a hard, permanent bond.

Can I use J-B Weld instead of welding?

The J-B Weld, also known as “The Original Cold Weld”, is a superior alternative to traditional torch welding. When bonding, the success of a project depends on selecting the right adhesive. Epoxy, a versatile adhesive, consists of resin and hardener and is the strongest among all types. It is used in DIY projects, auto repairs, construction, and crafting. Epoxyes have the highest PSI rating among adhesives and have high ShearStrength, ensuring a strong bond under force.

What does J-B Weld not work on?

J-B Weld products, including Twin Tubes, Syringes, Putty Sticks, SuperGlues, Repair Wraps, and Pastes, are two-component epoxies that harden to bond on most surfaces. Twin Tubes consist of resin and hardeners in separate tubes, while Syringes have resin and hardeners in separate containers within one unit. Putty Sticks contain an outer and inner layer that can seal cracks and repair holes when mixed by hand. SuperGlues offer high-strength super glues for instant bonding on crafts, home, and auto repairs.

FiberWeld repair casts combine high-strength fiberglass wraps with adhesive for quick-curing repairs or structural reinforcement. Repair Pastes are designed to seal and structurally repair almost any part of a vehicle’s exhaust system, formulated to withstand extremely high temperatures.

In summary, J-B Weld products are designed to bond to most surfaces, but they may not bond well to flexible rubber surfaces or canvas. The main difference lies in the dispensing method used for each product.

Is J-B Weld a permanent fix?

The J-B Weld FiberWeld Permanent Repair Cast is a high-strength fiberglass wrap impregnated with a specially formulated resin. When activated by water, it forms a strong, permanent bond, exhibiting a hardening process similar to that of steel within 15 minutes.

How to fix a stiff car door handle?

If the spring inside the door handle breaks, replacing it may restore the proper function of the tubular latch. If not, spray lubricant inside to prevent seized components. If the problem lies in the tubular latch, remove the latch body housing by unscrewing two screws on the latch faceplate on either side of the hole the metal bar passes through. This should resolve the issue without causing further issues with the door handles.

  • Great job! We were all holding our breath when you tested it a few times! Glad it worked. The end of a clutch-brake control cable just broke yesterday on my ride-on mower. This is the second time it has broken since I bought the ‘tractor’ 13 years ago. Ordered a new cable for about $20.00 on Amazon (spit, spit) only for the business to say it is no longer available. Looked for another one in all the selections and came across one bad review after another on these things (all slightly made differently but will fit the same make as mine). The only one with a good review was the one for $60.00. Had a duh moment and remembered that I know how to solder, have flux and varieties of solder and a soldering iron, and can solder the small hook back on the end of the spring myself. Right now it has a wire hooked through the spring and attached to the metal plate hole it hooks on to because it usually takes weeks for a part to get to me. That’s how I fixed it while waiting for parts last time it broke. Will make an improvement and lay and solder a cut piece of wire from an old metal clothes hanger we used to use before the wooden and plastic ones. Both wires will be soldered together for strength. That should really reinforce that part that is under a lot of tension. If solder will support huge stained glass windows, it will hold the wire on the end of a spring. Glad now I didn’t chuck out the first one that broke because sometimes the other end breaks according to reviews. I can pretty much guarantee that I won’t need the spare as MY fix will work.

  • Very nicely done Robb. Youre handy with your hands. Sunrise’s own Macgyver lol. Robb, I hope youre having a great labor day. I originally had planned to go to the beach today but since friday evening ive been having throat pain. Acute pharyngitis according to my doc, viral not bacterial. There goes the weekend plans lol. At least I get a few days off work.

  • It looks simple and I recently attempted it. The problem is that the door won’t open when I pull the handle. So I tried it about 3 more times, same result. It turns out there is a metal rod from the lock assembly that hooks onto the actuator and when you take off the actuator, you can accidentally detach the metal rod. There is a hole in the actuator assembly expressly for you to insert the metal rod. Make sure to insert the metal rod into that hole, so when you pull the handle, the door would unlock!

  • I don’t understand why people are having trouble understanding “Fix” They seem to think that “Fix” should in the same category as repair and replace. As in if you “Replace” it you have not “Fixed” it when really “Fix” should be an umbrella term that has repair and replace under it. So you can “Fix” your car by either “Repairing” or “Replacing” Why is this sooo hard for some people????

  • Wow, that was easy… When I fixed the door handle of my car, the bolt holding the handle was actually behind the glass. No matter how I move the glass, it was still blocking it. I didn’t know how to remove the glass all together, so I just had to put my hand behind the glass and somehow unfasten the screw using small socket…

  • The inside hand on my 2010 Silverado broke n the dealer wanted $575 for a new inside door skirt. Couldn’t find 1 at any salvage yards ended up ordering it from rockauto.com. Can remember the cost but like $30 or $40 buck. Took like 20 min to change. Have close to a grand. Scary the cost of something so little.

  • how utterly ludicrous that we have 10 trillion laws governing how cars have to be built for safety, emissions, efficiency and so forth. but car companies are allowed to put cheap, plastic flappy door handles on that break or would melt in a fire, possibly trapping someone in a wrecked car. but, they’re stylish!!!

  • This has to be a Toyota. I have never had a broken handle on anything but a Toyota. On a Previa and a Camry I used to own 20 years ago, which was a wagon. On the Previa, everything that has to do with doors has failed. Locks, handles, inside handles, glovebox, hell even the fuel door has failed and I have to open it with a flathead. But, that was the ONLY thing that has ever failed on that Previa. Not a single fucking other thing has ever failed or wore out. The interior looks brands new even after 30 years. But I can’t lock it or lower the windows. I can already tell you that the Sienna doors are the same way as the left sliding door is already failed. But I got the right one works perfect.

  • Just before I sold my 98 GMC Sierra for scrap parts, the inside drivers door handle broke off. I found the part for 5 bucks on the internet but didn’t buy it yet. Then I found out that the damn assembly is riveted on so you would have to drill them out and then screw the new handle in and hope it works. Dumbass engineers.

  • Ok so my door would unlock with the key but the handle wouldnt open it. So one day I broke the handle off trying to open it. Do you have a article for how to fix the inside where the door handle can open my car door? I know nothing of how to fix stuff so hopefully you understand. Or hopefully after I fix the handle it will open.

  • I’m wondering why old car door handles are different than new ones. On a lot of cars pre-2005, the door handles were either flush with the door or close to. Of course there are exceptions, like the Honda CR-V. Now just about every car, you put your hand between the door handle and the door and you pull…except for cars like the 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage. Why is that though?

  • Scotty, I have a 13 Subaru Legacy with the dreaded “Subaru pull” I’ve done 4 alignments still drifts right with wheel centered on flat roads, swapped tires side to side and front to back. I’ve had all my steering and suspension checked all checked out fine. Lubricated all slide pins and any point of metal to metal contact points for the pads (when I did rotors and pads all around) still pulls/drifts right when you center the wheel even on flat roads. Could it be a bad/sticking caliper?. I love my car owned it since new always kept up on maintenance and service car has 90,200 miles any advice appreciated Scotty! Thanks in advance

  • Scott I have a question I own a 2011 f150 I would like to add replace the older type bulbs to LED tail lights but in reading it could make the computer think the tail lights are burned out. are there led lights! Or companies that make LEDS this will not happen? could be something others may also want to know about. I understand that why but some others may noy.

  • Hello sir, 3 handles are Broken on our 2000 Toyota Sienna. I haven’t had them replaced due to financial difficulties so thank you so much for making this article. As I learn I will be passing this knowledge to all five of my children. Can you please tell me what the tool is that you used to reach inside the door to unscrew the bolt as I will need to purchase that also. The van is poorly ventilated with only two front windows that open so it’s intolerable to commute in the summer. It needs new air conditioning how can I tell if it’s broken or just needs to be refilled?

  • Please, for the love of God, don’t use a screw driver to remove your door panels! Use some plastic pry bars so you don’t marr the paint or the panel. I can respect that you know a heck of a lot more than me with only 5 years experience being a mechanic, but I do know, customers don’t like little scratches on their vehicles, and will never let you live it down if you put it there.

  • Hey Scotty, Nice article, i have a quick question for you. Every time i pull the handbrake on my car, it locks like its supposed to, but then when i put it down, it doesn’t unlock the rear parking brake shoes. What can i do about this? i Have Disc and mini-drums in the back, disc for regular brakes, and the mini drums inside the rotor for the parking brake

  • Hey scotty i have a 1997 kalpana galant Mitsubishi and the back two doors dont open from inside or outside.and are closed shut i have not been in any car accidents they just one day never opend . Do you know know any way i can fix that problem becouse i have a infant that needs to be in a car seat and its a hassle to put him in when the back doors dont open. Can you please give me feedback on a way i can fix it or replace it ? thank you and i love your website by the way its great.

  • Thanks Man! Dealer …. grab your socks, cuz we need $178.79 to make this big repair, oh and you need a appointment for this one. Crazy Kilmer… Grab your sockets, cuz you need to spend 10 bucks now (actually $12.80 delivered) to make this small 20 minute repair, oh and at your leisure, make your own appointment. Verified, and easily doable. I need just 2 more $saving DIY repairs via the Scotty Kilmer Show and then it’s off to Waikiki for the week!

  • Wrong, you don’t need to unscrew the lock hatch box or the handle screws. All you need is remove the inside trim and the old handle pieces (except for the back part which is separate). Slide the new handle and use you hand from the inside of the door to glide the lock hatch behind the new handle hock (might need a bit of practice but its easy). Also make sure the back components are latched on to the lock. That’s just a piece of plastic shaped like a fork and all you have to do, if its out of place, is to slide the lock shift( feels like a small metal rod) back in the middle of the fork.
