Bondo is a permanent, fully paintable repair material that can be used for repairing damaged or rotted wood in various projects. It is formulated differently and uses a different type of catalyst that is slightly more difficult to blend in thoroughly. Bondo can be used to fill, patch, and repair cracks in concrete surfaces, rotted or insect-damaged wood, holes in metal gutters, knotholes, loose tile, and more.
To use Bondo, mix the bondo and hardener on a piece of cardboard, spread a thin layer over the damaged surface, let it cure for 10 minutes, and then sand the Bondo until it’s smooth with the surface. Paint and prime the Bondo to finish the repair. Bondo® Wood Filler is ideal for almost any wood surface and can be used to make the rot look like it’s been replaced, fix it, and seal it.
For wood repairs, Bondo should be applied over non-primed wood, but wood stabilizer should be used first to lock down wood fibers. Bondo is not the right way to repair wood, as automotive bondo is not compatible with wood repair. It is much better to use epoxy resin with an appropriate filler.
Bondo will paint just fine after cured and sanded, but there might be better products for that purpose. For example, Bondo can be used to patch damaged wood, but it may not be suitable for exterior use due to its rigidity and resistance to water infiltration.
