To remove the inside door panel on a Cannon gun safe, locate and remove the screws holding the panel in place. Once the screws are removed, carefully lift the panel off of the safe. To open the safe and locate the hinges, unscrew them from the safe. The safe should be unlocked and open before engaging the release mechanism typically located on the inside hinge side.
To access the locking mechanism, remove the Door organizer from the inside of the door and have someone turn the handle to the lock position as far as possible while looking at the mechanism to identify it. The main idea is not to be able to remove the door, as you can cut the external hinges completely off a decent safe and the door won’t go.
I have a safe with the internal hinge and asked a “safe” company if they come off, but they said no. You can either widen the door jamb or disassemble the safe. Measure and see if taking the safe’s door off at the hinges would allow passage. However, there is a lip at the top and bottom that the panel goes into, so I am unsure how to replace without cutting the door or using multiple pieces to change the universal lock.

Canon safes are horrible because the electronic actuator inside goes out!! And when it does which it will!! It doesn’t matter if you put the correct code in 80 times even with new batteries even dated to 2030 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ You have to pay for a locksmith to come drill a big ass hole in your safe which makes it no good in order to get your valuable guns out of it!!
My Winchester electronic lock failed on the inside. They sent me a piece of crap plastic NL to replace piece of 💩 Lagard keypad but that did not work. The main problem with these people is you can’t get to customer service when electronic lock stops working. I will do a article of the safe getting drilled and opened because I can’t get any help. I will then weld some plate tool on inside of door where it was drilled and then I will replace the key pad with SafeLogic Xtreme emp resistance electronic and mechanical lock. I urge anyone thinking about buying a Winchester to call them first and see how many days and calls it takes to talk to someone.
My cannon safe lock eats batteries like candy (one every 3-4 days) and then quits working. My safe was purchased a short time ago from tractor supply. I’ve tried to call Cannon to get a replacement lock or help. Have called multiple times now and have never spoke to a person yet…this last time I called I selected an option for a “callback” to see if I had different results and to prevent waiting on hold for over an hour (with nobody ever picking up) as before. The result achieved was an automated callback which said “your callback has been cancelled in the queue due to high call volume”. If you’re looking for a safe, I would recommend staying away from Cannon safes. The safe’s fit and finish is ok, but if it tears up in a few months and customer support is non existent…then you just have a large expensive piece of metal. Sooo, now I’m trying to find a fix or replacement lock myself because cannon doesn’t support its products. Any potential buyers should disregard the “warranty” offered by cannon as they won’t answer the phone or respond to support tickets.
If you have a Cannon safe and the keypad will simply not lift up and off like is shown in the article, you may have one of the earlier electronic models like I did. Hopefully you aren’t locked out of your safe, I was able to get my safe door open and extend the locking bolts to prevent the door from closing while I changed out the lock. If it’s closed in the locked position, you’re going to have to call Cannon or a Safesmith. You have to cut/tear/remove all of the numbered plastic keypad to gain access to 2 screws. Behind the keypad there are 2 Phillips screws that have to be removed from the front, you can beat it upwards all day with a hammer and it isn’t going to come off, these early keypad locks weren’t made to be removed without destroying the keypad. If you can get the keypad and lock off, Youtube has a Great article titled “S&G 6730 Combination Lock Installation”, which shows how to install a S&G lock.
What a joke!!!! It shows you the quality of their product when after 10 years you have to completely replace the locking mechanism. To make matters worse; apparently Cannon no longer has the locking mechanism that came with my safari safe. They sent me the new mechanism (with no directions), which does not wok in my particular safe.
I highly recommend anyone in the market for a gun safe to get one with a key backup. My digital lock failed and it took Cannon 3 weeks to get me a replacement. They told me that they don’t use the secure ram locks anymore (that’s what I had that went bad) so they sent me a “ram bolt”…maybe? Can’t remember the name right off the bat but I didn’t like the fact that it’s so light. The one that broke had a metal housing where the new one is plastic. Here’s a article of it being replaced if anyone is interested. youtu.be/Ab65HaluE0A
