We check opening to comfirm if is level or plumb. Or you do it so you can know where you need to adjust for errors. If opening is not level or square, what you redo the opening. How and why was the door in the bad opening in the firts place. Every article says let’s make sure opening are square and plumb.
Very unprofessional, starting from using tools and up to the installation parts. The door quality seems very cheap with no vinyl wrapped frame, no door swipe. Putting silicone everywhere even there were I doesn’t need it show me that those guys are not installers. Open the holes on the door frame and cover them with silicone or whatever is very bad. The door sill with register screws is very cheap too and not solid at all. Even the applying the foam with cane from home depot and not with professional gun shows how good those guys are..Loll.

Hey Aaron! Thank you for this article. I surely wish we had checked out some reviews before purchasing our Jeld-Wen french patio doors. What was wrong with your patio doors? One of our doors seems to be warped. The jamb is level and plumb, the “fixed” door is level and plumb and fits perfectly. The “locking” door is level and plumb on the hinge side but at the top of the door where it meets the “fixed” door, it doesn’t seat properly in the jamb. We special ordered this door from Lowes (who says contact Jeld-Wen), and waited over a month for it… And had to fight with Lowes about delivery (three times, they said I wasn’t home or didn’t answer the phone..) AND the opening is already open and prepped, with the door already in it so we aren’t in a position to take it out and sit and wait on another blasted door!
I just spent about $4k on 4 exterior doors and I’m installing them myself. I’m seeing this exact thing on my first one and starting to get worried about the rest. Figure I’ll just chisel out the mortises at the top and middle a little, but still, probably adding an extra hour to the job because the idiots at Jeld-Wen don’t know how to hang their own doors. Never going to get business from me again and I will rant against them to anyone who will listen until the day I die.
Well nothing has changed with this company in quality control I just installed an exterior door and the hinges are installed just like yours I mean what the hell is wrong with them. My door was a special order door going out to my pool from the bathroom it cost over $900 and with my hinge side level and square the only way to make the deadbolt and lock set line up was to mortise them both out very poor quality.
Every single flipping jeld-wen door I buy always sags and the dead bolt never aligns up right! I need to stop buying these from home depot. It’s really ticking me off. Just installed one yesterday. Same thing. And yes I’ve had the bad screw problem too at times. Everything is level but always the same problem. Now I’ll have to shim the hinges again and hopefully not have to file the strike plate again. Ridiculous.
I worked for Jeld Wen door systems in grinnell Iowa. We were repeatedly told to seem out doors that were poor quality. I had a manager tell me that they will have something to fill the whole until they receive a product they are happy with. Management at grinnell was more concerned with quantity then quality. I would never put a Jeld Wen door in my home and I tell people I know not to do the same
