Residential burglaries are a significant issue, with three burglaries occurring every 60 seconds and more than half of the time, victims knowing the perpetrators. To improve security, consider adding a chain lock to your property. This quick and easy security measure can be done using a door chain lock, which is easy to install and can be done without drilling.
To install an adhesive lock, clean the surface where the lock will be placed and remove the backing from the adhesive strips. Then, firmly press the lock into place.
Installing a door chain lock is easy but also easy to mess up. With the right tools and guidance, you can even do it by yourself. Follow DIY expert Mickey Puckey’s advice and learn how to fit a security chain to your door.
A door barricade is another option for securing a door from the inside. A door barricade can be made by drilling a hole and screwing through the wall side adhesive tab or drilling a hole in the door for a toggle.
A door sliding safety chain lock is an inexpensive and easy way to improve security and provide peace of mind when answering the door to unexpected callers late at night. A good 12 volt drill should be sufficient for this task, especially if using a metal drill bit. The padlock security lock is attached to the mounting screws, making it harder for intruders to force in.
Door chains are fitted on the inside of the door to your property, allowing you to open the door slightly and check who is there.
📹 Are Portable Door Locks the Best Security for $5?Honest Review
I wish I would have gotten these years ago. But when I saw a deal of 2 for $10, I had to give them a try. The results were surprising.
📹 How to Make a Key That Unlocks All Locks
In this video I made a key that will allow you to unlock all locks. If you are wondering how to open a door lock or padlock and want …
Saw a article on Vegas crime and apparently they are breaking into occupied hotel rooms during the night to steal. Strongly recommend that tourists consider this because those fancy hotels do not even have cameras in the hallways. You have no security. They are hitting the occupied rooms closest to elevators/stairwells.
I purchased this lock and it works. It works so well, that I got locked in the bedroom. FIRST Be sure when you turn the knob that the knob goes in ALL THE WAY flush with the door. If not, you will be locked in as I was in a two story house. Someone had to take a ladder, climb onto the roof and then through a window to have access. He then had tools to take off the door from the hinges to free me. When we turned the knob we saw the issue. The know did not turn flush with the wood of the door. I will definitely use the lock – its really sturdy! But be aware of the ability to turn the knob all the way in before you utilize. Or you too…will be locked in the room.
When we travel my wife, and I both seniors. We hang a cross from the top of the hotel room door so it rests right above the room number. You will be surprised what a deterrent that is. A tenant from another room saw me in the morning, and said to me “we were freaking out, we thought there was someone dead in there”😊 I purchased thru a catalog years ago a battery operated alarm which hangs on the inside knob of the room, if anyone touches the outside knob a deafening sound occurs. But I will buy these as added protection.
Make sure the screws in the plates of your door jamb are long enough to HOLD the pressure of the lock. I have these because the building maintenance person they called in for he apt BELOW me, came into MY apt! They opened the door, I was asleep and FREAKED out! I emailed corporate…to prevent a “next time” (where I would shoot instead) I got one of these. For their safety. These work great at hotels.
They are for temporary stay places or rentals to stop any peeping toms or non thinking housemates etc. Good for adding to a bedroom so no one enters on any private activity right Of course they are not for strengthening a door vs impact attacks like some people seem to be using as an argument against them
My 80-year-old father who has dementia lives with me, and I’ve had a problem with him trying to get out the door in the middle of the night. I have five locks on my door currently and he has pretty much figured out how to get out of all of them except for one but, he’s been inspecting that one a lot and I pretty sure he’s going to figure it out. With this work installed on the outside of the front door to prevent him from getting out? I wasn’t sure what you could see on the other side of the door? I know it would be visible from the outside but I’m not really worried about someone getting in as much as I am him getting out right now.
My landlord refuses to install a lock on my bedroom door in my house i share with other peope. My bedroom is also 3 metres from the front door! I can’t sleep at night knowing someone could just walk in! I have been nagging them for months to install a lock, but im going to buy this, then i will actually be able to sleep! Thank you for the article, very informative
In case we find ourselves inside a room and need to secure it, this portable door lock definitely comes in handy. However, I’m curious about its functionality for locking an apartment room door from the outside. I haven’t quite grasped that aspect of this lock’s use. Would you mind providing an explanation or perhaps sharing a link that clarifies this for me? I want to make sure I’m not asking a question that might seem silly.
The pair is currently $14.99 on 11.15.23 but that is still a great deal. Prices usually go up on great products with review articles because of the uptick in demand. $15 isn’t much more than $10 a year ago considering TMV 🙂 Great article, will be buying a few sets. Like others, will definitely use them staying at motels and rentals. Rentals have always made me a little nervous because of access but not now.
This kind of lock has been around forever. There is a one piece slide lock that works great. I found that if a good amount of pressure is put on the door. the bar on the inside of the door will tend to bend away from the door handle. Wrapping a belt around the door knob and the bar will prevent the bar from bending.
How about America not having shit front doors, its 2023 why don’t you have a composite door with integrated multipoint lock bar? That piece of crap wouldn’t stop anyone that really wants to get in, especially that mostly glass door that you have that can be entered using duck tape and a spring loaded punch.
Hello, my daughter goes to a few cosplay a year, with her other female friends and they all share rooms, so I will definitely try and find a few of these that they can take to their hotel with them. Thanks so much for sharing this, it will help me sleep better at night, knowing she has an extra layer of security Cheers :goodvibes:
I got this one and it worked very well because one night my husband got home very late and I fell asleep in the bedroom with my phone turned silent and he couldn’t get in the house no matter what he try to do and got locked outside for the whole night he ended up sleeping in the car until I woke up and open the door we almost got divorced after that.
These do seem like they might be good for use in a hotel/BnB or as a temporary emergency lock for when your real lock is broken or something. As part of your regular home security though? They seem virtually totally worthless to me. People very rarely actually pick a lock and this isn’t going to make a door substantially harder to kick in or make a window substantially harder to break. Edit – Was digging a little further. Deviant Ollam did a test on these. They outright fail pretty easy with with any kind of force. Just pop off like they’re not even there. Only real benefit is the noise.
If you really think about it, the main thing this gadget does is make you more fearful. It is an extra (and inconvenient) thing you do every time you go inside, and undo when you go out. Reminding you that there are scary people out there that will hurt you. Whether there are or (most likely) aren’t. Every time. It is about as effective as a wooden wedge, and will add extra wear and tear to your doors.
Useless as it can only be used when you are inside I don’t see a point, maybe it would only be useful for people going on a trip to an dangerous country with a high crime rate and stay at a hotel that does not have an automatic lock already inside as you can also just mount and automatic locker for your doors if you want to use it for your locker instead, and even for a trip to another country it will only protect you while you are inside so it’s completely useless to prevent theft as we will be out most of the time rather than inside unconscious unable to figure out that someone is trying to break in. That’s my opinion.
These types of locks aren’t worth spit. When I was teaching at the university here, I looked for something that would lock a classroom door from the inside, in case we had an active shooter situation. (Classroom doors have no user-lockable locks on that campus.) I bought one of these and tested it with a student out in the hall. I installed the device per the instructions. He wasn’t a huge guy, probably 6′ and 180 lbs, but that lock bent all to pieces under a not-so-large amount of pressure from him and he was through the door inside 10 seconds. There are other better solutions.
If someone actually, really wants to get through that door? They will. BUT…. The sneak thief trying their luck? yep, I can see the use there. A solid kick to any door will open it. But if someone is trying to be quiet… sure, this works…. except… you have to be on the inside to deploy it. So – you can’t go out. Dont get me wrong – this is HUGE for single women in hotels – a great relief (I mean that!) But for the rest of us? limited reasoning.
These are great but I can’t figure out how this would work on an inwardly opening door from the outside. I could see it working from the inside, but I need a locking system for my door when I’m out of the house cos anyone that sets foot in my home uninvited while I’m home will hobble back out like a cripple/a cripple.
I feel dumb. I just moved to a new apartment and unfortunately the doors don’t have deadbolts, but for some reason i can’t get the dead bolt or latch bolt to go through. I made sure to check if they fit first but once i have it in the lock plate the bolt doesn’t go through. Anyone else have the same issue?
Haha I wonder why he didn’t do kicktest he knows it would break his door. Put all your weight on the standard Lock and it will hold also. You can tell your wife and children’s corpses what a great deal the 5 dollar toy lock was. I’m sure they will agree if they could. That right dad no need for you to spend 25 dollars and 30 minutes of your time for something that works.
I like this but opted for a simple large eye screw. Push it into the crack of the top of the door is what I did, and screw it down a turn or two creating a wedge that makes everything work together if someone kicks the door in, it holds well, as I tested it. Combined with a 2×4 cut and wrapped in non slip grip wedged under the door handle and I can’t even be rescued if I needed it without massive work. I used things I already had, but this for the price looks great if you travel.
Im looking for a product for my parents. Both disabled, dads in a wheelchair agter losing a leg to a blood clot last year. There apartment has a single door knob lock. Ill buy these and already purchased a leg style extension pole but im looking for something if there both away. Some neighbors have been robbed by sinple carding the lock. Any advice is greatly appreciated
It actually works I just got mine today, I bought some for my sister too when her husband has to work she’s at home by herself and gets scared sometimes, I live by myself also I’ve had people try breaking in before when I lived in another apartment, I feel secure now if someone breaks down the door it least these locks will give you a head start !! It works great!! From Minnesota.
A hollow-core interior door can’t offer genuine security regardless of what hardware you use on it, as its weak spot is the door itself (it is literally made mostly of cardboard – Even the nicer ones with thin wood veneers on the outside are glued to an extremely flimsy cardboard structure on the inside). No capable adult would have any problem defeating a hollow-core interior door, either with a stiff kick or simply charging it with their body weight. A simple tool like a hammer would knock holes in it immediately. So, no real security possible with a hollow core interior door, although you could achieve temporary privacy from a pet, a child or a well-mannered, law abiding adult.
How most stores this will work well with the deadbolt but on a home the thickness of the door casing and the screw length into the structural frame will determine its effectiveness. Very commonly the door casing is the 3/4-in board which is not very strong if the strike plate is attached to that board with 3/4-in screws and somebody were to ram the door the door casing would probably split. But if you run screws that are 3 in long through the door casing into the structural lumber (the 2×4 or 2×6), then those screws will hold the strike plate in place which will hold your brace in place against the door in place and the door will be very difficult to get open even if you’ve got just a spring bolt.
I have a big door stopper that I locked & yet the crook was able to break it. I need something that will be sure to stop them. The only thing that stop them is to sit & catch them in the act. The device you are showing only act to stop this who are not using heavy force to get in. It can also be picked the same way they use a card to open the useless lock. I only buy them to use on staying in Hotels. That is the only useful.
0:46 quote: “…thick enough top be strong…” but you bent it only 2 seconds early and you quickly stopped as you noticed how easy you were bending it…. If you can bend steal with your hand …it is not thick enough to be strong. 0:44 it is bent… How much did QZYL pay you to lie on a youtube article?
Those things are exactly as effective as putting a piece of Scotch tape across the door jamb. The only “useful” purpose one might serve is to prevent an accidental “barge in” from the housekeeping staff at a hotel. There are a few products on the market that are actually effective (to a certain point, anyway), but none of them will do any good if you don’t replace the door strike screws with hardened steel 3 inch screws.
Home Security does not begin at the front door. The sensible approach is to own a barking dog who’ll early alert the people inside that a thug is near. Exterior lights all the way around the premises deter thugs like light scatters cockroaches. A home Security System which records everything in view 24/7 with a panic button with loud siren, and of course, a reliable firearm and every one in the home should know how and have the guts to use it for self-defense. Realize the scum of the earth is not breaking in to have a Bible study session and to sing a few hymns with your family. He/they are breaking in to loot, murder and rape your women, even your little beloved daughter and son.
