How To Use A Blender To Remove Interior Faces?

To remove internal faces in Blender, follow these steps:

  1. Press tab to go to edit mode.
  2. Go to Select->Select all by trait->Interior faces.
  3. Press X and choose Faces.
  4. Switch to Face select, select everything, and use MMB and Limit Selection to Visible to prevent any face from being selected.
  5. Orbit around the model and deselect all outer faces, then use X to remove them.
  6. As of Blender 2.77, you can use the Intersect option in edit mode.

To remove interior faces, press Select > interior faces. However, this doesn’t work in this case. For many faces, all four vertices which are created by converting a curve with bevel effect will extrude into the inside of the shape.

To delete internal vertices, use either vertex, edge, or face select and select the geometry you wish to delete. Press alt-H to bring them back when done.

To remove inner faces, press L and select all faces. Press the right button on the mouse and go to SEPARATE -> SELECTION = SOLVED.

To automatically select internal faces, select > Select All By Trait > Interior Faces, Delete/X > Faces. To enter X-Ray and Wireframe mode, press X-Ray and Wireframe.

In the top bar in 3D view, select > Seletct all by Trait: Interior Faces. Press x or Del to delete the interior faces.

Enter the edit mode (tab) and clear out the selection so no faces are selected (Alt A).

In case 1: Select first the geometry on the “outside” and invert the selection. In case 2: Select first the geometry on the “inside”.

  • For me, this works for most cases, but with many many verts close together (inside of a tight Bezier curve stroked and turned into a mesh) it leaves overlapping, or sometimes makes some holes. At that point selecting a bunch of the uneeded extra verts and Merge by Distance fixes. Thanks for this tip!

  • These tools are handy, but if you want the easiest and cleanest mesh the remesh/decimate tool is the go to solution for print focused production companies. It allows you to mash any wierd shapes together, texture your surfaces, and helps keep those error finders in slicers happy. I know you werent sold on this method before but it really opens up many build options that completely break bools. I hope you consider delving into this join method in future vids.

  • Great! I’ve always wanted to make a hard surface bell pepper 🙂 Joking aside I’m curious about the Shift-D vs Alt-D step when you made the shape originally. I know it wasn’t the focus of this article, but are there any adjustments you’d make to these techniques when doing a radial array (or any shape of array for that matter) or mesh instances?

  • I follow dozens of Blender tutorial websites and IMO this is the best one for beginners like me, hands down. So many solutions and useful tools learned by perusal a single article. The clean and clear diction makes a huge difference as well. (there are many good teachers here but sometimes is very hard to make out what they´re mumbling) Thanks man!
