This video demonstrates how to remove an interior door frame in under 2 minutes. The first step is to open the door, loosen the caulk or paint along all edges of the door trim or casing using a utility knife. Pry off the casing and insert the tip of a pry bar behind the casing. Knock out shims, remove the hardware, saw off the nails, and remove the frame.
If the door frame is damaged beyond repair, you may need to replace the whole thing with a slab door. Replacing an interior door can improve the look and functionality of your space, and even increase your property value. To make removing the trim easier and minimize damage, start by unscrewing the hinges from the door so the door can go. Remove the hinges from the doorway, take off the woodwork on both sides of the door, and loosen the hinge pins by tapping them with a hammer. Carefully lift the door off of the hinges and remove the center screws from each hinge. Cut all of the nails and work the door frame back and forth until it is completely out.
To remove the door frame interior, pull the casing (door trim) off and use a utility knife to cut the edges. Remove the door frame by prying in off carefully, removing any screws and carefully prying each piece of the frame off, similar to how you pried off the architrave.

Is there are a non-destructive way of doing this? I have a 100 year old home that I’m trying to restore while keeping as much of the original materials intact as I can. One of its problems is that there’s not a single door in the entire house which is still square. I’ve already shimmed/bent the hinges back into place but – in many cases – the whole frame has gotten out of alignment.
Im doing some bathroom work. My bathroom is attached to my main room. In order to increase space on both sides, I am going with a barn door. I wanted to know after I remove the door and door frame. What should I do next to make it look like a normal walkway? Im a beginner and this is a small project for this spring.
Not bad Joseph, -But please, cut down on the ums and awes a bit. ( shortens up the vid for us) -No need to saw back and forth when using your Sawzall. It does that for ya Joe. 😉 oh yea, get a new metal cutting blade Joe. – No need to see every nail banged in or make us wait while you do both sides. -Safety glasses are not only cool, but they’re smart to use. Thank Joe. – –
Sir, I know you’re going to hate me for this because you said you hate this sort of thing, but…….. It’s called a Swordfish not a saws all or recipe saw or whatever you called it. Sorry again, I know I’m an a$$hole but I couldn’t resist (mainly because I’m an a$$hole) 🙏. I wish I could buy you a beer just to show that I really am sorry. Oh, and thank you for the bending the door pin trick, I have a few doors in the house that need that so I know what I’m doing as soon as I feel like doing something. So thank, sorry, and have a great day.
