This video demonstrates how to replace a Ford Flex/Edge door handle. The process involves removing the T20 Torx screw from the back of the outer door handle, pushing the door lock bezel backwards and off, sliding the door handle back and off, and pulling off the door panel pads. The fixed end part attached to the door is not easily removed.
To replace the front exterior door handle on a 2009 Ford Edge, you will need to remove the door panel to gain access to the handle. Rolling the window up or using a Motorcraft handle is recommended for quality and longevity over cheapness. If the door handle is broken, unscrewing the mounting bolts, carefully removing the old handle, and attaching a new one is recommended.
For a defective lock, remove the door handle with exposed screws by undoing the screws and sliding out the door handle. If adding a new door handle, remove the latch mechanism. Remove handles with recessed holes.

So I watched this article (I’m not a car guy) built up a little courage. I needed the drivers side door handle with the lock. I bought the OEM for 65.00. Got the part, went to Harbor Freight got a 6.00 magnetic screwdriver and a 9.00 bit set. My torx was a T20 not a T27. Got home, 5 min later I was done. Thanks for the article. I did not want to take that panel off. He is spot on with this article.
After NOT finding specifically what I needed (replace the broken door cylinder lock cover) I deciphered this article to get the solution. To help anyone else needing what I did, the method is as follows: Pull the round rubber plug where the Torx screw access is. I used a 25 Torx head, and ONLY LOOSENED the screw at the same time I attempted to remove the remaining broken piece that clipped the cover on. DO NOT remove the screw, instead loosen it and wiggle the plastic piece out. Put the new cover in, tighten the Torx screw back up, put the plug back in, and YOU’RE DONE!
Hey James. I’ve used your article twice now. Once for the front passenger side of my 2007 Ford Edge SEL and now my driver side door with the keyhole. Worked perfectly both times. I simply loosened the screw (did not remove it) and used a shoestring as suggested from one of the comments below, to pull the latch toward me so the aftermarket part would fit. Done in 5 minutes LOL. I laugh because I was at a Ford dealership having my oil changed and asked if they could pop this on for me. The service manager asked two different mechanics and they told him the whole panel would have to come off. I explained how to do it and he told me the driver’s door was much more complicated. They wanted to charge me $79.99 plus tax to fix it!!
Thanks so much, but unfortunately the AM handle set that I bought do not sit flush, nor slide back to the right position, additionally the latch hook at the front is too wide to set in the black plastic housing, just spent 2 hours trying and I used to work in a body shop as a repair man and then manager, also worked for and Ins. company as a damage appraiser for many year, so pretty familiar with repairs. Thanks again for posting this article, saved me from taking off the door trim, now I have to try to find O.E.M. Anybody out there use a good A.M. one that actually fits?
I bought 1 on amazon, installed on 5/19/19 so far so good!!! Just two tips 1. You do not have to take the torx screw all the way out as it only keeps pressure on that piece!! Just back out a few turns and the piece will pull out. 2. I looped fishing line around the little latch piece, (you were having trouble getting behind through the big hole)inside the door next to the lock and pulled down to get the big handle piece behind that lever, that’s the part that unlatches the door, once the handle piece was behind I pulled the fishing line out and it was behind it!!! And finished as you said, however all this without taking the inside panel off! Took about 20 minutes. Took more time to get the tools together 😀 Thanx so much for this article we all need to help each other even if it’s through one mans trial an error!!! Thanks
THANK YOU!!! I have a Lincoln MKX and I followed your directions and replaced it with FORD factory parts (I followed your advice and did not go with an aftermarket piece). The cost for my new handle was approximately $50. I read the comments here and only loosened the torx to get the old lock cover off and put the new one in place. I don’t know how much money I saved by doing it myself, but THANK YOU!!
On my flex, I got it on first try and took it off (stupid me), after that it wouldn’t grab the latch. I stuck my finger inside and mine doesn’t have anything blocking my from toggling it with my finger, so I took a piece of string and stuck it into my fingernail with the ends running towards me and hooked the latch inside the door. Then I was able to pull on it while inserting the new handle. This way, I didn’t have to take my whole inside door panel off. Now I just have to find the little screw that I lost lmao. 😅
THIS IS NOT THE CORRECT way to accomplish this repair and you will waste and hour of your time. I just replaced one of these the two days ago. Took TEN MINUTES, yes TEN MINUTES, because all you have to do is loosen that torx screw behind the removable plug and back the Torx screw out a couple of turns. DO NOT REMOVE the torx screw all the way out otherwise it will drop to the bottom of the door, which afterwards you will have to remove the inside door panel to retrieve it. Then you can remove that broken piece of plastic that was stuck in the key cylinder lock mechanism. Then simply slide the new part over on top of the lock cylinder, align everything and turn the torx screw back in and gently tighten it and you done. The Ford engineers knew that this was going to be a common problem and design it to be a quick and simple fix.
