How To Take Off A Sliding Closet Door On The Inside?

This guide provides a step-by-step process for removing sliding closet doors from their tracks and base in your home. To remove sliding doors, loosen the brackets at the top of each door with a flathead or Philips-head screwdriver, then try lifting it up a little and pulling it towards you. Sliding closet doors that are mounted to rollers and suspended from a track are meant to be removed by pushing the door bottom into the closet space while pushing it.

To install sliding closet doors, follow these steps:

  1. Slide the door to the center of the track.
  2. Lift the door up at a slight angle to remove the bottom rollers from the track.
  3. Replace sliding closet doors with standard doors if you need to store something wide in your closet or want to access more of your closet space.
  4. Gather the necessary tools and materials.
  5. Identify the type of sliding closet doors.
  6. Remove the doors from the tracks.
  7. Remove trim and molding.
  8. Unscrew the door frame.
  9. Loosen the brackets at the top of each door with a flathead or Philips-head screwdriver.
  10. Use a screwdriver, hammer, and putty knife to remove sliding closet doors. A new door frame is also needed.

This guide is perfect for DIY enthusiasts and homeowners looking to make a change in their closets.

  • Thank you. I agree with the other comments that it’s so helpful to get to the point and show us what we’re looking for without all the unnecessary fluff. Do you know how I could also remove that metal lip left behind that hid the tracks? I’m installing bifold doors and need the extra clearance for the height.

  • That’s great… except that the screws for the bottom (floor) bracket are UNDER the door itself! The door that doesn’t move far enough to the right/left to access those screws!! There’s physically no way to get to the screws without removing the doors, but I can’t remove the doors without unscrewing the bracket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF??!
