How To Restore Old Brick Exterior?

To age bricks, gather a pitcher of moss and fill a bucket with earth and water until it resembles dense pancake dough. Spread the clay on the brickwork you wish to age and push the moss into it tightly. This will attach to and develop on the bricks, providing them an aged look.

Aging or distressing can change the look of bricks, helping newer brick fit in with the older style of your home or camouflage replacement bricks in an older structure with a decorative touch. There are several ways to update old brick to get a new look, including staining, which has less upkeep than painting, and painting.

Choosing the right color for exterior brick is a big decision, and our virtual exterior design service by brick and batten can help you take the guesswork out of designing your home exterior. For example, if you’re tired of the orange brick in your fireplace, use paint to transform it while still giving it an aged look.

To quickly make new bricks look old/reclaimed/antiqued for the most realistic faux aged brick look, ensure all cracks are filled and then scrape off or add more mortar to the brick. When painting a bare surface like brick, apply primer before painting to allow the paint to adhere easily.

For DIY faux brick for accent walls, backsplashes, or fireplace makeovers, follow these steps: powerwash and let dry, wall and site preparation, apply concrete and masonry primer and sealer, apply top coat, and inspect.

  • Very nice!! I’m so glad you mentioned Romabio — had never heard of them! Which of the Romabio products did you use? If the BioCalce Limewash it looks like they have four: Classico, Flat Lime, Semi-Transparent, and Glaze. There was a separate section for Mineral Paints though too, so just not sure what you used here. I didn’t see a Mineral Limewash (combined) though. Also, did you find tinting was necessary for this application, and if so, what did you find that worked well for it?

  • I liked your article, but a fyi when you play music it’s so loud I have to lower the volume, but when you speak I have to raise it back up. So I find myself annoyed because I’m constantly raising and lowering the volume. If you can please adjust the volume of music to be low and in the background. Or just don’t have any music at all. Sorry I don’t mean to be ugly, but I think if you were to fix that your article would be awesome.
