Thanks for this article, it’s the only one I could find on YouTube that walks through a complete door replacement. I see all the comments are admiring the woman’s decorating thoughts, and wanting the man to do this for them, nobody actually trying to follow the DIY steps. So I’ll be the 1st, I tried this. It went ok, but not nearly as easy as this guy makes it look of course. This was my 1st time trying to make something (not just demo) with a router. I kept grinding the plastic box, more than the wood door 🙂 any tips on how to do this deftly? Also the hardest part was that my old door is not quite the standard size so before attaching the hinges I had to saw the top and side of the new door, total pain.
IMPORTANT: If you have pets and you choose to use builder’s grade doors, you must paint the bottom edge of the door, preferably with multiple coats of paint, before installing. A urethane clear sealer might also be a good idea. REASON: If a pet urinates against a door, the liquid will run down the door and drip onto the floor. There will always be an amount of liquid that just hangs in drops on the bottom edge of the door until it evaporates. If the bottom of the door is unfinished, or just primed, the liquid can absorb into the material and, if it’s the typical engineered wood (particle board), after a couple of years of this, the material will begin to swell and break down, ruining the bottom edge of the door and causing the veneer to flare outwards.

Were the doors custom orders or did you get lucky with the door openings being the perfect size? Unfortunately my current interior doors are all slightly less than the standard 30″ so I am going to have to do some planing to get them to fit.

The door is facing south so it gets lots of sunlight that caused the cracks over the years. There is a special term for the frame which I don’t remember. I used the general gist of your article to take the glass insert from one door and install it in my door. Took me about an hour including removing the old door from the hinges, removing all of the hardware, measuring, cutting and re-install of the glass, hardware and putting it back on it’s hinges. Great tutorial there. I have a few questions for you. Hope you can answer them for me. So, I have a fiberglass door and two sidelites on either side of it. I am changing them all from the current half round (at the top) style to the squared style, so I need to do a little cutting to modify the new glass. I just purchased two new sidelites and a larger glass for the door (has 2 glass pieces the same size as the sidelites currently). I can’t take the sidelites out and will need to cut them stationary. The door I can take off and cut them as you did in this article. Before I start to slice and dice my sidelites, I am trying to find the best game plan to do the small cuts required to square off the top corners of the new glass for the two sidelites. I don’t think my jigsaw has a small enough footprint to complete the cuts. I am crossing my fingers and hoping that I can use my oscillating tool to do these cuts. Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated!
