Water leaks through the bottom of exterior doorways can be costly, causing damage to floors and carpets. To prevent water from coming under a door, it is essential to inspect the door threshold, replace it or add caulking for a proper seal. Weatherstripping can also be installed around the door to prevent water from entering.
To clean the area around the door threshold, ensure that it is free from water and debris. If a storm has caused water and debris to trickle inside, take extra care to remove this. If water seeps in from the bottom of your door, address the issue promptly to prevent further damage to your home.
If you suspect your roof or siding is damaged, make sure that it is properly sealed with weatherstripping or caulking around the door. If you are unsure how to do this, have someone take out the threshold and install a new one. You may also need to replace the bottom two feet of each jam leg.
A common cause of water leaking through your door is if the frame has become rotted or warped, especially in wood doors. Have a helper spray a water hose against the door where it meets the jam to see if any water leaks in. Shower door seals, which are clear in color, may help seal gaps.
If the door was installed reversed, fill the block with a sill pan made of aluminum that covers the concrete below the door and extends up the door. A flashed pan under the door will prevent water from coming in from above sheets to the outside and from above sheets to the outside.
In summary, water leaks through the bottom of exterior doorways can be costly and can lead to costly repairs.
