How To Remove Stains From An External Wood Door?

Wood doors are a common and easy-to-clean feature in homes. However, it is crucial to choose the right cleaning solutions to avoid damaging the wood. Opt for mild, non-abrasive cleaners, such as steel wool soap pad and Howard’s Restor-a-Shine burnishing cream, and damp paper. For stained wood doors, brush off all surfaces with a dust brush or dry rag, and use wood polish to bring out the beautiful glow. Regular dusting and mild dish soap can help remove stains.

Restaining a door can also be a refreshing solution for old doors. Mix equal parts water with either gentle dish soap or vinegar and scrub the door lightly using a soft sponge or cloth. The best way to clean a wooden front door is with a mild detergent mixed with warm water in a bucket or spray bottle. Rinse well with a hose, mix a solution of outdoor bleach and water into a pump sprayer, and mist the door. Murphy’s oil soap and warm water also make a good cleaning solution for stained wood doors.

To clean a non-abrasive brush, soft sponge, or soft lint-free cloth, dip it into the soapy water and gently scrub the door’s surface. Never use steel wool or a stiff brush. Clean hardware, replace hinges, and weatherstripping when necessary. Mix a solution of one part vinegar to four parts water and use a soft cloth or sponge to gently scrub the door.

  • well, it is possible to do it this way IF, your door is not exposed to sun, if it is “very much” in the shade and does NOT “deal with the elements” too much …. YES it will be “beautiful”, but for how long ???? That is the question ….. The product you used is pretty much a DIY interior product for furniture type stuff …… Exterior is a bit different, and you need exterior products ….. Best just to stain and then clearcoat with an exterior clearcoat …… two separate products …… Plus interior oil based polys dry hard and brittle, and will start cracking and flaking in time, but like I said, if your door is well covered from the elements, maybe it will be fine …… it’s all about that sun wind and rain

  • Hi! I was just curious how your parents’ door has held up since you stained it? Would you do anything differently? I’m going to follow your instructions and do mine! Also, how long do you think it would take the door to dry on a sunny day? Thanks for taking the time to do this article. It’s really helpful!
