To determine the handing of a door, stand outside the door and face it. To identify a right- or left-hand door, stand with your back to the hinges and look at the swing direction. To measure the door jamb width, measure from the backside of the trim to the backside of the interior trim. Stand with your back to the jamb that has the hinges. If the door is on your right, it’s right-handed, and if it’s on your left, it’s left-handed. If the door opens away from you and the knob is on the left hand side, it’s a right-hand outwarding door. Hanging terminology states that when opening the door towards you, if the hinges are on the left handside, the door would be left hung and vice versa for right hung. The handedness of a door is determined by being on the side where you have to push it open. To determine the door swing while replacing an existing door, step into the doorway with your back to the hinges, standing sideways in the opening, facing the door.
