Household doors often open and close without assistance, which can be problematic for heating or cooling and trapping pets. To prevent doors from closing on their own, replace the door hinges, use anti-slam door hinges, wedge a doorstop underneath the door, or use a wedge to prevent the door from closing.
Another solution is to use a door stop, which can be purchased or used as a temporary fix. Adjust the door-leafs and/or plane the door’s edges to fit the stop. If the door no longer fully closes, adjust the door-leafs and/or door stops accordingly.
Feeling pads along the edge of the door frame can also help keep the door from closing. Self-adhesive felt pads make it easier to attach to the door frame. The easiest fix is to remove the middle hinge pin and put a slight bend in it. Use two small eye-hooks or cup hooks to open the door fully against the wall and screw one at the top of the door, handle-side.
A door wedge can also be used to keep the door open at the bottom. Another solution is to take the pins out of the hinges, bend them slightly with scrap wood and a hammer, and then reinstall them. The last hinge needs to be adjusted using an old serial box to create a shim to balance the door. Tap the pin back into the hinge, creating enough resistance to keep the door from closing by itself.
Lastly, remove one hinge pin from the door and place it on a hard surface like a concrete step.
