How do I choose a white shade of paint?

The color of white paint on a wall depends on the direction of the room and the natural sunlight it receives. In a north-facing room, a warmer white will be suitable, while in a south-facing room, a cooler shade is ideal. The light changes throughout the day, with brighter mornings and dimmer afternoons. In rooms facing east and west, the sun takes on a golden hue.

To determine the type of natural light, consider the amount and type of artificial light used. Rooms with less natural light will benefit from gray or greige undertones, while those with more sunlight will benefit from a cool or true neutral white.

When choosing white paint, consider the room’s function and existing color. Kitchens and living rooms are more suited to warmer tones, while offices and bedrooms may prefer warmer tones. The style and color of furniture should also be considered, as white paint’s reflective quality can pull colors back into the room. Floor color also plays a role in affecting the appearance of white walls.

How do I choose my white?

To avoid choosing shades that are too creamy or icy, consider evaluating the undertones of the color. Consider natural light and direction, choose a white that matches your space, compare white paint options, and consider how white makes you feel. Don’t forget to consider taupe and greige, and buy high-quality paint. A recent survey by Ace Hardware and Benjamin Moore revealed that nearly one-third of respondents choose white as their top choice for almost every major room in their home.

However, choosing the best white paint can be challenging, especially if you’ve encountered white paint chips at a local hardware store. • We are painting our exterior white-it’s between Greek Villa or Snowbound. It’s a modern bungalow but we’re going for the modern farmhouse look (white w/ black doors/accents and natural wood combo) What white would you suggest? Or what is the most common white used when doing this style? What color semi transparent stain would you use for the porch to complete the vibe? Thanks!!

  • Hello, I know it has been some time since you posted this article, but looking for advise. What white would you use on a home that has a 14 foot wrap around porch and seems to stay shaded for most of the day? Also, is there a recommendation for the type/finish that will stay clean. We live in a 40×40 ranch that resembles a barndominium. Thank you so much for posting articles like this one on painting!!

  • I have a two story 1886 home on a corner lot with a beautiful blue roof. Lots of gingerbread trim and a big front porch. Will go all white, but the question for me is…when everyone says a white paint will be much whiter outside…how much? It happened to my neighbor two weeks ago. “Patience” was supposed to be a warm creamy white, and it lightened considerably and turned lemony yellow on her, to boot. And this was trim color! She went to the SW store 20 times to view her choices in different lighting and then painted samples and moved them around, like you’re supposed to. She had to stip the painters from using the garage color, it was so off.. some bloody undertone came out. Pretty disappointed In the outcome. Think part of her problem is she was trying to match a grey tone roof and body color with the warm tones of Patience and it didn’t gel at all. But even samples can’t mimic the large square footage these colors are applied on. I see mistake after mistake on color mixes, unless you go monochromatic or stick with white. My house is too exposed and visible for these kind of mistakes so I’m going with white…want the color to look like a shimmery old fashioned petticoat. Gray undertone to complement the blue roof. I’m a gardener, with pink climbing roses and clematis all over the porch. In the summer, that will add some color. I know the sample should be much darker, so Snowbound, Oyster White are supposedly too white to consider?

  • Used Benjamin Moore Pelican Gray and love it for exterior. Many tints to give it different looks in different light. It’s not dark and depressing or white and boring. Kind of blue and kind of gray. Used BM Midsummer Night for doors. Amazing backdrop for cedar fence and all of my plants and flowers. By the way, enjoy your articles!

  • Do you do remote color consultation’s? I have a Terra Cotta roof and flag stone on the walkway. I like the creamy/off whites for the base color. I have white vinyl windows. I have a three car garage facing the street, assume I would paint the garage doors the color of the house. Please let me know if you are able to do a remote consultation. Thank you

  • I truly enjoyed your article and thought you had many helpful tips. We have a warm brown/red brick and I thought I wanted a gray and went with essential gray and it is way too gray and not warm enough for the brick. Is there a “white” that you would recommend from your experience. The window trim is a taupe color. Thanks for any advice. Thanks

  • What’s the best color for brownish-red roofs and the neighborhood houses in warm, neutral browns/ earth colors? What is a good combination for the brownish-red roof; we can’t decide on the color of everything, like the door, window trims, and the gutters. We aim to make our “the smallest house in the neighborhood” more appealing and charming but with a modern farmhouse feel.

  • Thanks for your article. I’m choosing white paint colours for my exterior. I love all your suggestions. I have a traditional tutor home and want a layered white and white look. Can the body be a lower LRV and the trim be a different lighter white. Also, can I do warm whites for a south east facing home? I’ve read that this exposure should have cooler colours. Thank you!

  • Loving your articles & getting ready to paint our exterior! Balboa Mist is the closest of these article options that may work with our stacked stone but still might be too light for me. Do you have any warm neutrals, just a bit deeper, that you love more in the LRV 50’s range? Also, our neighbor’s house is white. So far, SW Shitake is the closest I’ve found but it’s a little yellow for me. Love the warm grays or greige. Any help would be great and so appreciated.
