I’ve worked for designers who will only shop at the super super high end showrooms just to get that higher mark up and you can also put a noose around a clients neck and narrowing down the options available to the clients. Sometimes clients look at the item cost then once they add the mark up they don’t approve the item and ask you to source an item with a lower cost. And the mark up/cost plus model is entirely shady. And 100% the paperwork and time it takes to do all that paperwork has to be billed back to the client! when working as an employee at previous firms there was a constant back and forth with clients as to why their invoices from the firm were so high. We already have a difficult enough time justifying our hours just for design services, if you add in management/paperwork hours it’s even worse.
