How To Modify French Doors Inside?

The distance between doors and the frame should be uniform in size. If the door is sagging down and sticking at the top, tighten the top and middle hinges. If it’s sticking at the bottom, adjust the bottom hinge. Open and close the door while working to see how your adjustments affect the door. French doors that drag along the ground can damage your floor, door frame, and the door itself. Even small gaps in French doors can cause damage.

To ensure both doors are square, use a T-square. Previous owners may have plained or sanded the doors to account for less than plumb door frames. To adjust door hinges, door height, compression, and weather tightness for your conservatory or French doors, follow these steps:

  1. Measure the deviation of the French door and doorframe.
  2. Remove the plastic cover from the corner bearing to expose the screw. Adjust the screw until the frame is parallel to the doorframe. Turn the screw clockwise to lift the casement and anticlockwise to lower it.
  3. Open both French doors to expose the screws holding the hinges in place. Use the type of screwdriver that matches the heads on the hinge screws.
  4. Remove the butt hinges from your doors.
  5. Attach the new adjustable hinges using the original screws.
  6. Remove the doors, scrape/sand them, and install 3 new hinges per door.
  7. Reinsert a 3″ screw from the top hinge that connects to the frame to fix the sag.
  8. Make sure all hinges are mounted to the same depth. If one hinge is not in line with the other, it can cause the door to not hang properly.
  9. Place a block (2×4 scrap) at the top and push the door bottom toward the closed position. Pull out the pins, turn them clockwise or anticlockwise to increase or decrease the contact pressure.
