This DIY video demonstrates how to quickly mask exterior windows and doors before spraying paint. John Burbidge, author of “Watching Paint Dry”, provides tips on how to do this. To protect against overspray and leaks, use 1.5-inch blue painter’s tape and a roll of lightweight painter’s plastic to tightly cover all windows and doors. For long stretches of trim, use a Scotch-Blue™ Painter’s Tape Applicator to apply tape flush against trim quickly and easily.
Painting windows is an essential step in the process of painting a room, but they present double the challenge as you need to paint them on the exterior too. To mask off the glass, use painter’s tape, which will also protect any trim you don’t want to be painted. Lay down plastic sheeting below the windows to catch drips and scrape off any loose paint.
Using a 3m hand masker with a ladder hanger, run 6ft plastic and flip and tuck it. Tape with white masking tape, 3m 2020 or CP66, and 1.5″ tape around the edges of a window or door to give a perfectly polished look once the painting is complete.
In summary, masking exterior windows and doors is a quick and easy way to protect them from overspray and leaks before painting.
