The frequency of use of your Keurig coffee maker impacts the frequency of cleaning. It is recommended to wipe down any splatters from the outside and drip tray every time, wiping down the exterior and drip tray with a soapy rag once a week. Clean the cup holder and water reservoir with soap and water every 1 to 2 weeks. Descale your machine with a descaling solution or white vinegar every 3 to 4 months. Run a brew cycle with clean water afterwards to flush out any mineral deposits.
To clean a Keurig with vinegar, follow these steps:
- Wipe the entire machine with soapy water. Mix liquid dish soap with hot water.
- Unplug your Keurig coffee maker and take off the removable parts, including the water reservoir, lid, mug tray, and K-Cup holder. This deep clean will remove limescale buildup inside the machine, which can cause problems over time with water flow, water pressure, and temperature.
- Fill the water reservoir with a mixture of half vinegar and half tap water. Turn on the machine and run a brew cycle with an empty cup in place, empty and replace the cup, and run another brew cycle without a coffee pod.
- Wash all removable parts with dish soap in the sink, including the water reservoir, mug base, pod holder, and milk steamer, if your machine has one.
- Descale your favorite coffee appliance in 30 minutes or less with just some white vinegar and fresh water.
- Wash and clean any removable components of the coffee maker in the sink with warm, soapy water. Some models even have dishwasher-safe components.

DO NOT USE UNDILUTED VINEGAR TO CLEAN! I watched this article so that I could clean my keurig. I filled the reservoir halfway with vinegar, ran 2 cycles & now it won’t turn on. I did more research that you need to dilute the vinegar with water because the vinegar alone has way too much acidity & it can ruin the mechanisms. now I have to get a new coffee maker! please make it know that you need to dilute the vinegar in the reservoir before running a brew cycle.
Pro tip: Fill the machine with 3/4 vinegar the rest with water cycle the machine until you start to see a drip. Turn it off. Let it sit overnight. I’m in the morning finish the cycle and run to four containers of hot water through it.. letting the vinegar sit allows it to break up the hard water build up it off insides the water line.
I’ve read that on the rinse cycle, to get Vinegar completely out, best to use distilled water which won’t have the minerals left behind. Also, the rinse should be repeated at least 6 times! Here’s an article that says 12 times, which seems over kill, but it was a credible source “Good housekeeping” “Empty and rinse the reservoir thoroughly. Fill it to the MAX line with fresh water and perform 12 rinsing brews using the largest brew size to remove any traces of vinegar or descaling solution”
Some of you are talking about cleaning it while others sound like youre descaling it. I can tell you how to descale, I literally just did it.. I poured a small bottle of apple cider vinegar along with equal parts of water….Lift the lid removing any unused cups. This is the key here…When you close the lid make sure you turn the machine off…..then press 8 and 12 simultaneously if thats an option til the descale light turns on. Hit The K button and let it run…do it over and over til it says please add water. At that point take the reservoir and clean it thoroughly…fill the entire reservoir with water…HIt K again…let it run…once it stops do it again, and again….til it says add water again..At this point the descale light will turn off…and youre ready to go….It worked for me and Im an idiot when it comes to these things….haha
There are a ton of comments saying people’s Keurig have stopped working because they used straight vinegar which messed up the mechanisms. I’ve never once used a Keurig before but I ended up clicking the vid anyway. So, i want you to delete this article right now. Good effort in making the vid but since it is false info and causing thousands of dollars of damage, that is uncalled for. You should feel terrible, these are the kind of b.s articles that need to be reported. Matter of fact I’ll do just that. Good day
This is good for the basics. But does anyone know how to clean out the caked up coffee grounds from within the KCup holder and funnel. You can’t get a toothbrush in the hole to reach the edges. I have tried multiple tiny bottle brushes but because there is so much “gunk” it won’t touch it. Any ideas / suggestions would be appreciated.
just took one of these apart the sensor was keeping the power off you can reset with a paper clip but the actual problem is the heater water coil inside is plugged with water scale, if you notice your cup size getting smaller this would be the problem trying to descale with water will not work (did not try) but running a lime cleaner through it even getting the unit full of a lime cleaner and unplugging and letting sit over night would make sense when the coil is cut apart it is the last wrap of coil that finally plugs the machine and makes it unusable which tells me if you get your machine full of a lime water scale dissolver unplug and lay it on its side tipping toward the top of the machine to clear this area which plugs the most Reply
