Protecting your convertible interior is crucial for its longevity and functionality. Regular cleaning of both the top and interior of your vehicle, applying appropriate protector solutions, and using devices like a sunshade can help prevent damage from the elements. Rain, sun, and extreme heat are equally damaging to fabric surfaces, even when a convertible top is in use.
To clean the soft top, use water and gentle car shampoo, such as TechCare Gentle Car Shampoo, with a brush with extra soft scratch-free bristles. Protect surrounding non-fabric materials from overspray, wipe up any overspray promptly, shake the can well, and ventilate the interior. Reapply an interior waterproofing product every six months or after a deep cleaning, whichever comes first.
When working on a convertible, either put the top down or cover it to prevent compound and polish splatter into the weave. Start by cleaning the area with a gentle cleaner to remove grime and debris. Next, grab a fabric or vinyl repair kit and apply a convertible top protectant once per month to retain the prime condition of the vinyl top. Shake the bottle well and apply the protector to the soft top using the applicator provided, ensuring all areas are evenly covered.
303 aerospace protectant is great for protecting vinyl rubber and plastics with UV protection and leaves a matte to satin finish. For maximum car interior protection, keep the top up and use a sunshade.

After talking about buying a mustang conv. for seven years ago, i bought it two years ago. the rag top was fairly new. I stored it in a municipal garage with a ton of pigeons. I got all the mess off the first year but the second I kept going to clean it but didnt follow thru. I got most of the pigeon droppings off using dish soap and a tooth brush. there are small remnants of droppings but now i have bleached looking portions of the roof about two inches wide. What do I do?
Hey guys. Not sure if you’ll see this since its an older article. I have a Bakflip x4s hard roll cover on my truck. Would you recumbent this same process for cleaning it. Also, can I use the interior Ceramic to give it some protection and an OEM look? Thanks guys and thanks or the great products. – Jeff
Had a detailer not do a thorough job with waterproofing, and the convertible top has spots from the waterproofing, he did not spray evenly, the product he used is gtechnig smart fabric, I have Raggtopp fabric cleaner, if I spray this on and work it in will this remove the gtechnig spots on my convertible top? This happened about 3 weeks ago, what do you suggest I do?
Another great detail (and great camera work as well)! Thanks for sharing, Phil, the Benz looks fantastic! Also really like your practical approach of “do what works for you, but if it ain’t broke…”, can’t agree with you more; why spend time and effort deep cleaning the top if it doesn’t need it? Thanks again, and have a great day!
I don’t know how you guys do it, but your articles just keep getting more professional and better all the time. Thank you for all the effort you put in to talk about the products and give application tips. That plastic sheeting product looks like a game changer! The Mercedes turned out beautifully; gorgeous paint enhancement effort. I hope the customer was blown away.
Hey Phil, quick question, I have noticed that you rinse off the vehicle before you do the APC rinse, however some people say not to rinse before the APC Rinse. What are your thoughts, rinse before APC, or No rinse before APC Rinse? I understand both but not quite sure if one is better than the other, what do you say?
Phil I found out first hand that by using 250ml bottle of the GTECHNIQ I Smart Fabric V2 for my MB Convertible top just wasn’t enough to do a saturated application (ran out) so I got on Amazon and quickly ordered the 500ml bottle. The sprayer head really puts out a lot at one time and quickly drains the bottle (should have known – duh). But we learn as we go along – I sure do! BUT your articles as I’ve always stated before are priceless. You & Jess really pour your Heart & soul into giving us (your subscribers) raw, truthful & direct information that is TRULY appreciated by all your viewers. A quick note: and as you say ‘this works well for me’ and this does work well for me – but to help keep clean a convertible top from a days drive etc. its good to use a a lint remover on a roller w/handle on the top. It gets ALL the little ‘stuff’ off without having to get the top wet or having to use a brush. I put the top up on my MB before using the Smart Fabric and ran the lint remover over it front to back and presto all the small stuff was picked up without leaving a film or anything. Just food for thought. I’ve had this one article of yours on the Smart Fabric application in my library for some time waiting to find the time to apply the Smart Fabric & tonite I did but ran out of product. So I learned a lesson tonite & will reapply on what I missed in the days ahead. Thanks again too you & Jess – I really enjoy all the information you provide for us. Blessings…
Another excellent real world, real expectations article… A pleasure to watch… So nice to see that you use several different products and you’re willing to tweek what is used as needed. Great Job… After perusal several YouTube websites I’m down to two favourites, Your website and Apex Detailing..
Car looked super nice. I think I seen a MTM foam Canon. Are they actually worth the money? Look nice, but kinda expensive. The tape and plastic when you did the soft top was pretty cool. How long does the fabric protection last on the top? On average. I bet it’s nice getting cars that are not hammered. Great turn around. Hi wife.
