Norm Yeager’s classic article provides a step-by-step lesson on installing a stair skirt board after installing the treads and risers. To install skirts on an existing staircase with no room between the wall and the stringers, creativity is necessary. The video explains that skirtboards are typically sandwiched between the stair stringer and the wall, and are installed before the treads and risers that abut them. This saves time and expense on the stairs.
To install skirts on existing stairs, use ogee trim down the stringer and end it in the flooring. Notch it and the outside 45° base into notched ogee trim. The video also discusses defining the top of the skirtboard and finding the angle, as well as defining the transition points.
In summary, this video provides a step-by-step guide on installing stair skirt boards, covering everything from layouting to taking measurements and determining cut angles.

I hope this is for remodels. If you’re stuck with this method in new construction, then the contractor messed up. The REAL easiest method is to space the stringers off of the framed wall with a 2x. This leaves room for the drywall and skirt board to be installed with no notches other than top and bottom. Then treads or carpet can be installed to cover the remaining 1/8 to 1/4quarter inch gap.
I have a 90° staircase (4 steps creating 90° to the straight run above) that I’d like to add a skirt to. Trouble is that when I lay the 1×12 in position for marking, the two bottom steps sit about 2 inches below the positioned skirt board. The 2 angled steps that create the 90° staircase sit level with the board and seem easy to mark. Is there a way to make the bottom 2 steps work for skirting?
