To install stair treads and risers, follow these steps:
Place the tread on either side of the stairwell’s frame. Nail the tread to the frame and repeat with the rest of the treads. Allow the glue to form a strong bond for 2 to 4 hours before continuing. Sand the new treads and risers smooth with a belt sander and grind down any nail heads until they are level with the wood.
Use a caulking gun to apply a thick bead of liquid nails to the back of each stair tread, covering the entire surface evenly. Use Finish Nails, specifically a 16 or 18 gauge finish.
Measure and prepare the wood for the installation process. Apply construction adhesive or fasteners such as nails or screws to secure the wooden stair treads.
Add the risers first and then the stair treads on top. Use a smaller nail gun and switch it out for the larger one when the stairs go in.
Install the temporary treads, which will depend on the wood used. For box stairs with closed stringers, use wedges for holding them together, while open treads should have glue blocks under them.
Predrill the treads and wax the nails. Use a 15- or 18-gauge nailer for risers, and Wakol’s MS245 adhesive for engineered treads.
Cut the landing tread to the desired length and use Loctite PLPremium on the underside of the body of the tread. Use a 16-gauge finishing nail-one in each side for stair risers.
In conclusion, installing stair treads and risers is a fast and efficient process that requires careful planning and preparation.
