How To Get Rid Of Smells From Car Interiors?

This video guide provides tips on removing odors from your car’s interior, including wiping surfaces with water and vinegar to remove cigarette smell, vacuuming out moisture to remove mildew or mold, cleaning vomit with a water and vinegar solution, and removing urine stains with a stain remover. If the odor persists, seek professional help.

To air out the interior, purchase natural purifying bags containing herbs, spices, and wood chips that gently eliminate odors and freshen your vehicle’s interior. If your car smells terrible, learn how to clean the interior and use air fresheners and odor absorbers to get rid of mildew odors. Baking soda and charcoal are both great natural odor absorbers, and you can sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda on floor mats, car seats, and other fabric surfaces.

Ozone machines work great to eliminate lingering odors, but you can also use ozone machines to remove lingering odors. Wiping down the interior, airing it out, ozonating it, shampooing the carpet, and treating the HVAC ducts are all methods for removing bad car smells.

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer that can absorb unpleasant odors by spreading it over fabric seats and carpets. Mix one-part white vinegar with two-parts water in a spray bottle and spray the solution onto the seats and throughout your boot. Place a small bowl of activated charcoal or coffee beans in your car to absorb odours, or hang a bag filled with camphor.

If the odor continues to linger, seek professional help. By following these steps, you can help remove odors from your car’s interior and create a fresher, more pleasant environment.

  • Many smelly problems in vehicles come down to mold or mildew growth somewhere within the car. During summer, when we rely on air-condition to help us survive the scorching heat, our cars are susceptible to growing molds. We usually have our windows closed during summer to have the cold air from the air-conditioner to circulate. That alone will make the mold thrive and survive inside our cars.

  • Lots of good tips here, I particularly like the tip for spraying vent cleaner into the the vents and running the A/C. I bought an old SUV from someone who loved to eat (and spill food) in it and their dog was a regular passenger. It took a lot of work to get it clean, I found dried cola and food in just about every crevice.

  • How to clean a child-seat. Awesome- can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to this one. Give it a year or two and we’ll get “How to remove chocolate-smears” and two or three years down the line the “How to remove grass stains from football-practise” 😉 And no, I am not sarcastic- I honestly am stoked for all three vids 🙂 I’ve learned so much through Larrys advice and when he learns new things (no matter if they are residue control or child seat-cleaning), he shares them so we can learn. Didn’t use Shag on my seats till now or Mousse on plastic- will have to give that shot.

  • Last summer my friend spilled about 2 cups worth of milk on my backseat. We were heading to work and I had no choice but to let it sit for almost 10 hours. When I got home later that day I just unbolted the seat and saturated center seatbelt buckle. I did not have the proper tools or chemicals to tackle this problem and I needed the car for work the following day. Here it is 5 months later. The backseat has been aired out for all this time but I don’t have a clue as to what I should do to make the seat safe to put back in the car. It’s a bench style seat. A giant block of foam wrapped in black cloth. I know hiding underneath the cloth is some nasty looking foam. 😔

  • Your a smart guy and your doing a good job, but It’s even better when you suggest a diy or a household alternatives, this way you will be teaching people, advertising for your products and get more subscribers at the same time. Let people choose, that will give them confidence Thank you, you’ve been a great help

  • Im a fireman and my Subaru xv was driven in the middle of a forest in fire, and it toke years to discover that the only way to eliminate the smell from fabric and plastic parts ways with vinegar. The situation is a little extreme, but I hope my experience helps somebody to solve similars problems. It was no posible to desamble the entire car, but now thw car smell better.

  • bro, although these steps help remove stains and such, the steps you’ve shown only masks the bad odors. They don’t kill the bacteria that’s causing the bad smell. Especially on cars where the driver is a smoker. The better and easier way to remove bad smells is to kill the bacteria that’s causing the bad smells and that’s by using a ozone machine. just 1/2 hr of it on in the car will kill all the bad odors

  • @ammoNYC Would you be able to recommend or do a article for people just starting out? Im Orlando right now and I’d like to start my own wash/interior detail plus vacuum business just for myself. So far all I have are products I use on my car. Would you be able to recommend a “lean” start up set just to get me started. I care about my car and only want the best products for it and my clients cars.

  • I have a problem in my car i think somebody spilled some sort of perfume in my plastic armchair dont know how to remove the smell i tried silicone bags ofcourse cleaning with various products and clay bar non of that helped… cant find any info on internet how to remove perfume smell. I am even thinking to change that armchair…

  • Six years ago,my family and I were driving around in our new VW SUV and in less than half an hour my 10 yrs old son started to feel nauseated and eventually puked on the floor. I knew that the gas out effect had a bit of effect on me but my son couldn’t withstand it. So I agree that we must keep windows slightly open when driving a new car.

  • The prices for his cleaning products are outrageous. I know I am only 17, but I can spend FAR less on products at Walmart, and get the same or better results than he gets with his products. $65 for a small bottle of leather conditioner? Yeah right! I just bought 2 black magic leather conditioners for $3 each.

  • i don’t watch your articles often because you only advertise your products, in which i will never buy with the insanely high price that they are at. You should promote alternative products (common consumer products) that people can use as well. Your articles are only in relation to YOUR products. when there are tons of others you can buy from walmart that will do the same job.

  • What if the car has been sitting out in the open, only covered by tarps for the past 40 years, and reeks of bad aging and mice? I’ve cleaned the car numerous times since I’ve gotten it, and even stripped out the interior to clean it (though that wasn’t the original intent, but I took advantage of the opportunity).

  • Actually most people like the new car scent as do I. But it’s not just the idea of a new car. Of course having a clean sanitary car is a must, it’s the new materials plastics, leathers, etc etc that gives off the new car smell. Cleaning the interior the best we can is the best way to achieve that result and a happy driver.

  • My musty moldy car smell is from previous owner letting leaves and debris get all inside engine bay. When I turn on ac it’s this horrid smell. How can I safely get all the leaves out and dirt from every crevice in the car. It’s like this guy drove through mud, took it to the car wash and all the other parts were left. Geez. I dont want to pay a detailer, but might have to

  • Baking Soda will not remove bad odor! although your youtube is set nicely but this info about Baking soda is incorrect, baking soda will only absorb moisture from the air inside the car and will react to corrode whatever surface it was applied to. Bottom line, don’t apply baking soda as it”s not fit for the purpose and will not do but harm to the cars.

  • I am a big fan of Larry and the AMMO products, and this message is ment as constructive feedback, and no hate. I just wish that Larry would upload more often and more lengthy articles. why? B cuz his articles are so awesome and dare I say perfect! Now I know there may be lots of reasons why Larrys uploads are shorter and fewer, but as a fan I want to see more and learn more. I know that you are a hard worker Larry, and that you dont have to make these articles, but this is a humble request for more and lenghtier articles, thats all, from a fan that really appreciates you, your work, your articles and products. Hope you dont find this offencive or in any way negative. cheers!

  • I drive a soft top jeep wrangler and there is a terrible smell of either mildew from a previous leaky top or cat urine from pets climbing where they shouldnt be when the top is off. Do you have any tips for removing these especially strong smells within the seats, (All carpet has been removed and thoroughly cleaned but the smell still lingers leaving the only areas possible as the seats or the non-working AC system.

  • Whats the best way to remove animal urine from seats? I left my back seats outside and now they smell hideous, i drive withouth them for months now, i cleaned them several times with car upholstery cleaners with no results. I don’t have any deep cleaning services near me, nor do i own a steam cleaning device. Pls help, the life of my mercedes is hanging on a thread!

  • Hi! I bought a car that has got some water inside on the carpets during the winter stowage. There was some ugly mold on the surfaces. I totally stripped the interior and powerwashed the carpet. It is more fresh now but how do you remove black mold stains off of light coloured seatbelts? Should the baking powder mixed in water remove the spots? What do you recommend?

  • I found it helpful up to the point it turned into a commercial for your ammo products, but I guess you got to make money some how. I didn’t really learn anything other than they sell vent cleaning spray with a long ass tube on the can, but who didnt already know arm n hammer baking soda eliminates oders, it says it on the box for christs sake.

  • Want to smell the leather nothing else the new car smell people talk about us a pet hate of mine. To me certain brands have smell Some I find offensive others nostalgic like jaguar Daimler go To 1990 had a very familiar smell I still open up old xj to getvtge childhood smell even car 40 + year have that jaguar smell it to do with the leather they used at the time. More modern car have bad plastic chemical smells cheaper car with certain plastics can be very offensives.

  • Sorry, disagree. Love new car smell. Fact, when looking for a used/like new car I asked all owners,” have you smoked in it, has there been pets in it, and have you used any air fresheners?”If they answered yes to any of these questions I was no longer remotely interested. Fruity smells, smoke, or pet odor is gross and makes the car feel trashy.

  • My 2001 facelift Audi A4 B5 still smells like new car, didn’t when i bought it 5 years ago tho but cleaned it out properly without using any air freshener og scent spray. My 2007 Audi RS4 also smells like new car with only minor cleaning. If you buy cheap cars you get cheap smell. Most cheap dailies I’ve driven (full time car mechanic) smells wierd and unhealthy when they are clean, but most of them isn’t clean and smells like baby barf, smoke and filthy dogs 😷
