Depending on the size of your dining room chairs and the number of chairs, our Leather Remnants can be a great choice. Consult our Reupholstery Guide to determine how much leather you will need.

If your dining chairs are due for an upgrade, apply a leather repair kit to mend any tears or cracks on your dining chair. Start at the front, staple the cover in place, and then remove the upholstery, apply a patch on the underside, glue the leather securely, and let it cure. Re-attach the leather to the chair. Condition the leather of all chairs, starting with the torn one, to ensure it’s a good product and will work.

Do leather repair kits actually work?

Cheap, quick, and quick repair kits are popular for selling items, but they often result in inferior results and are considered a “rip-off” by the next owner. It’s important to note that leather and vinyl are two different materials and require different processes and materials for permanent, invisible repairs. No one kit works equally well on both.

Middle-of-the-road kits advertised as “great” work, but their materials and chemistry are sub-standard, making them incapable of producing long-term results and potentially causing severe damage to the leather. These kits are often advertised as “great” but are not suitable for both leather and vinyl. Therefore, it’s crucial to choose the right repair kit for the specific needs of the item.

Why are my leather dining chairs peeling?

The distinction between genuine leather and man-made leather is often difficult due to the unique characteristics of bonded leather. This type of leather wears differently than leather, and if your furniture starts peeling or flaking, it may be bonded leather. However, customers often struggle to understand the material, as some furniture may be sold as genuine leather on the sales floor or at an affordable price, outweighing the durability and quality of leather.

A home furnishing consumer survey found that less than 10% knew bonded leather was an imitation, while over half (53. 3%) believed it was real leather with enhanced performance. The remaining 40% were not familiar with the term bonded leather.

Leather can be restored using two methods: using the Leather Recolouring Balm, which is a simple wipe-on and buff-off process, and the Leather Colourant Kit. The Balm requires the leather’s surface to be absorbent for the balm to penetrate properly. It is cheap, easy to use, and produces pleasing results. However, it only restores the color, not fixing the cracks. If the damaged area is not absorbent or the cracks are darker than the leather, the Leather Colourant Kit is needed.

  • I have a set of 6 that I would like re-upholstered. The factory faux is horrible, cheap and now tearing easily, what would the cost of a set of 6 be? In the same leather you used in this tutorial. The sides aren’t angled like the chair in your article but the backs, too curve and seat cushion are very similar. We’re in Yorkshire ?

  • I’d like to thank you for this article! My lockdown project has been upholstering my dining chairs! I haven’t used a sewing machine since I was 14 years old! And I’m not perfect, you make it look so easy!! The bends are most definitely the hardest! But for my first effort it’s not bad! My chairs are still so stable even after 15 years so I’m happy that they are getting another chance to live!! Thanks again for the lesson and motivation!!!! 🙌🏾

  • Hi. Brilliant article – the same style chairs I am planning to recover. I note you mention you use silk film to make fitting the cover easier. I have been trying to source some, do you know anywhere this might be available in smaller quantities in the UK? I can only find massive quantities so far. Many thanks.
