Why is my heater not firing?

When your furnace won’t ignite, it’s important to check the ignition sensor, which can be damaged if it’s dirty or if the heat exchanger doesn’t sense an ignition. A trusted furnace repair company can replace the sensor and clean it properly. If the furnace pilot light doesn’t stay lit, switch the power on and off, power down the furnace, and inspect for damage. If the issue persists, call a professional for gas furnace maintenance.

If the circuit breaker panels and furnace aren’t in the ON position, check the electrical panel and the furnace itself. If they aren’t, carefully pop the breakers back into place and close the furnace door to activate the safety switch. If none of these steps work, it’s best to seek professional help.

What causes heater failure?

Dirty blowers in a furnace can cause equipment failure, affecting the heat exchanger and causing it to overheat. Dirty air filters restrict airflow and can worsen duct sizing issues. Regular filter replacement is crucial. A dirty flame sensor can also cause issues with lighting burners, as it can’t sense the flame. Dirty burners can also be a result of neglect, making them unusable or even malfunctioning. Regular tuning and cleaning are essential to prevent these issues and ensure optimal heating and cooling.

Some homes have filters in return air vents or in their furnaces, but double-filtering is not recommended unless the system is designed to handle this arrangement. When replacing the air filter in your furnace, ensure the cover is closed correctly to prevent the furnace from turning on.

Dirty air filters can block airflow, causing a heating system to malfunction. Check for clean filters, vents, and registers, and ensure no obstructions from rugs or furniture. Clear the condensation line and empty the reservoir pan to reset the system.

  • I have 6 of the old beige/tan model. After the 5th yr, all of them failed. I was able to return 3 of them to Vornado Repair, the others were past warranty. Now 1 of the repaired ones has failed, after only 1 winter yr of use. I don’t want to throw these out into the garbage. I think I will attempt to DIY repair. Wish me luck!

  • I just ordered switches from the link. I’m wondering if there are other parts in these units that wear out leaving the heater still working, yet causing these things to eat up switches….. I’ve been looking for parts lists, hoping to replace everything aside from the element and fan motor. Any knowledgeable answers are appreciated..

  • I have two of these heaters with failed switches. I apparently ordered the incorrect switch (yikes it blew my circuit) but found your link and just ordered and HOPING to repair my 2 heaters and save me a couple hundred dollars. I have 6 Vornado products (3 fans 3 heaters) and initially their customer service was good, NOT so much when I called about the failure of these switches. ;( Fingers crossed I’ll have them repaired when the parts arrive. Thank you for your good instructions, the links and so glad to hear you are healthy (hopefully still!!)

  • Dumb question : is the round thingamajig with the wires that look like Bobby pins that sits directly behind the fan a heating element of some sort ? I’m asking because as I was gently vacuuming the inside, the “paper” foil-serrated-tape that they (the Bobby pin looking things) mount to just disintegrated … Is it possible to buy this replacement part or is my fan kaput ? Thanks ! I wouldn’t have opened it at all but it was super filthy ! Thank you !

  • Why is there a third wire in the middle if it is not connected to anything useful inside the switch? Is it for the little light in the switch? I had the same problem and this would have probably fixed the heater if I had watched this article first. Instead I physically connected the three wires in order to simulate a working switch (to make sure it would work, before buying a new switch), and the PCB “blew up” (flash of light and then nothing except the fan working). Some chunk of solder got annihilated. To my defense I had looked up some diagrams of the switch showing that in the ON position all three proms are connected.. So what the f.. heck?
