How To Fix A Latch On An External Entry Door?

This tutorial demonstrates how to replace a worn door latch, covering both interior and exterior doors. The process begins with identifying the problem and removing the inside door handle. Next, the latch is removed, followed by the outside door handle. Each door set has its own unique issues, so it’s essential to follow these steps.

The new latch should be installed in the right direction, with the tapered side facing the outside of the door. The part that will attach to the doorknobs should be in the center of the hole. Doorknobs eventually break and need to be replaced, but the most common issue is the failure of the spring inside the latch mechanism.

To replace the latch plate, the piece of metal attached to the door jamb through which the latch passes when the door is completely closed (also called a strike plate), measure for the replacement lock and adjust it in place. The latch plate, also known as the strike plate, is the piece of metal attached to the door jamb through which the latch passes when the door is completely closed.

After removing the screws holding the faceplate, internal door handle, and spindle bar, insert the new latch piece into the hole along the side edge of the door. Ensure the latch is facing the right direction before reattaching the handles. This simple DIY step-by-step tutorial can help you get your door working again quickly.

  • Thank You Sir, you just saved me $90 on a new lock and handle set !! About a week ago I purchased a Kwikset front door handle set, because my 17 year old set was very difficult to open the door. Your article was spot on!! My latch was the problem, so I went to Lowes bought a new one for just $8 bucks and that’s it. No need to replace the entire set, returning it un opened back to Home Depot. Thank”s again brother and YOUTUBE !!

  • Great article, thanks! Our bathroom door latch doesn’t retract enough and sometimes makes the door very hard to open. Is there any way to adjust the latch, so it wouldn’t stick out so far? It’s always been like this, so I don’t think it is from wear, but maybe from incorrect installation. 🤔 I hope you are all safe from the fires!

  • how do you get the metal shim onto the unit? I got the rectangular plates off easily enough, but the metal shim seems to be too small: it does not clear the tip of the latch that actually moves, even thought I think I see holes that are supposed to line up with pegs on the body of the latch also, my metal slider seems to get stuck 3/4 of the way to the 2-3/4 mark. any thoughts?

  • Thank you for showing and explaining everything so clearly! Fortunately/unfortunately I had already had some experience taking door handles off for various locking reasons so I was already partially familiar with the inner workings. That wear was so easy to see once apart! Also thank you for including the lifetime guarantee aspect! Free repairs no cost yes please
