To prevent ice from forming and expanding inside garden hoses, drain them before winter and attach a male air hose fitting to them. Connect the air compressor to the blow-out port and shut off the main water supply. If your extension hose has a backflow preventer, it should be shut off and compressed air blown out.
To blow out an underground water line in a house, turn off the water to the sprinkler system and open the backflow preventer valves. Find the blow-out port, remove its plug, and connect the air. Shut off the main water supply first.
Burying your garden hose can make watering easier with a remote outside faucet. Instead of dragging long lengths of hose, run a permanent underground pipe with a blowout valve to a convenient spot. Attach the air feed from the compressor to the cold water hose bib for the washing machine to blow water back up the line. Shut the cold valve at the far end of the hot water line and blow air back through the spout to push any water out of the piping.
Ensure to use 150psi or less water pressure to avoid blowing the hose out. A small compressor can be a good investment for around $100. Place the connection for clearing the line as close to the shut off valve as possible to ensure all water is out.
Unclogging an underground drain pipe can be done using cable rodding, blow bag, hydro jetting, and picote milling machine. Remove the hose from the hose bib or faucet and lay it flat on the ground.

Thank you! You helped a homeowner clear out a tub faucet after changing the cartridges didn’t help. I really appreciate it! 1. Air compressor quick connect -> 1/4″ male adapter 2. 1/4″ female -> 1/2″ male adapter 3A. 1/2″ female -> 1/2″ coupling (used this for tub/shower spigots) 3B. 1/2″ female -> 3/4″ male hose adapter (will use this later)
Mr. Hardware, you are amazing in explaining techniques. My problem is that I have a portable car tyre inflator compressor which I intend to use to blow out somewhat clogged 1/2 inch domestic plumbing line. I am having an uPVC swan neck sink bibcock which is giving out very diminished flow. Shall I remove the bibcock and try injecting water directly into the 1/2 inch tee concealed in wall or do it via the spout of the swan neck pvc tap (as it would have its valve for shutting off air supply to plumbing; however I can do the same by switching off the air compressor though)? I am looking for a readymade 1/2 inch male steel nipple fitted with a car air pump nozzle adapter on other end. Suggest me something as I am not finding anything of that sort online. Thanks in advance.
Great article, and something worth doing. Here’s a question. My water lines to the shower/tub are pretty much clogged with build up. is this something that would work to clear them? I can’t afford to have them replaced at this time, which is why I’m asking about if this would be a good temporary fix until I can have the funds to replace the pipes.
Hello, great website, I just subscribed. Are there any particular brands you recommend? I’d like something inexpensive, if possible. I’ll be using it for a 450 sq ft cottage once a year, but will probably find other uses for it once I have it. By the way, does it help if I allow adverts to play all the way through, or can I skip them without loss of remuneration for you? Thanks again for a great website. I bookmarked your homepage, too.
