Sarah Farmer, Taste of Home Culinary Director, shares her method of frosting cupcakes using a zip lock baggie as a pastry bag. The process involves folding the square Ziploc bag into a triangle, securing the edge with duct tape, and filling the piping bag with frosting. Then, cut the corner and pipe the frosting onto a cupcake.
To prepare the Ziploc bag for frosting, gather the necessary tools and materials, such as a freezer-sized Ziplock bag, scissors, and desired frosting. Prepare the Ziplock bag for frosting by using any flavor box and pudding mix. The instructions can be found in the instructional video.
To make the frosting, spoon the frosting into the Ziploc bag and squeeze it to avoid waste. To make the process easier, place the icing bag in a tall glass and roll the top edge of the bag over the top of the glass. Use a spatula to smooth the top edge of the bag over the top of the glass.
You may already have ziploc bags in your house, so these cake decorating techniques don’t require you to buy any special cake decorating supplies. Open the bag point-side down into the cup and open it around the mouth of the cup. This simple and easy method of frosting cupcakes with a zip lock bag is a great way to create a bakery-inspired look.
