Country interior design is characterized by warm, neutral colors, such as beige, sand, or cream. To maintain a warm and inviting atmosphere, opt for white walls that are warm or off-white, or those found in nature. Country homes often feature thick stone walls and low ceilings, so choose natural wood pieces and incorporate country-inspired pieces.
When creating a country living room, mix traditional pieces with modern country designs to create a relaxed, comfortable, and easy-to-live feel. Mix rich wood, high and low, old and new for a rich modern farmhouse interior that evokes pared down, relaxed style, and low-key luxury.
To achieve a modern country look, choose high-quality furnishings in natural materials, take inspiration from nature’s colors, let characterful features take the lead, introduce vintage pieces, soften spaces with plenty of fabric, fill your home with pattern and personal treasures, and embrace tongue and groove paneling.
A successful country style will combine the best elements of rustic and vintage interior designs, with warmth, personality, character, and a hint of minimalism. Exposed beams on the ceilings contribute to the rustic and charming ambiance. Blend contemporary elements with timeworn furniture and decor, and keep colors light and neutral.
Incorporating vintage style and careful furniture redistribution can change two rooms for zero cost in a country home. By incorporating these design ideas, you can create a cozy, relaxed, and comfortable country home that is both stylish and affordable.

Can I teach myself interior design?
Design school is a crucial step towards professional practice in interior design, according to David Harper, associate dean at the New York School of Interior Design. Attending design school offers a holistic view of the industry and the craft, focusing on techniques, schematics, and compositions. It also forces students to study topics that a layperson may not consider, such as art history, color theory, and specific computer programs. Maria Lomanto, president of ASID New York Metro and founding principal of DesignGLXY, urges that attending school is essential for those pursuing interior design and not just decorating.
She believes that learning about building standards, codes, health safety, welfare, and lighting through experience would be slow and arduous, and any experience gained prior to classwork would not count towards qualifying for the exam.

English country is a design style I’ve loved since the popularity of Laura Ashley’s designs. I have really thought about including a mural in my living/dining room. There is a local artist in Port Townsend, WA, Susan Harter, who has designed beautiful wallpaper murals that would fit perfectly with the English country design style, and I am sure that I will order one of these stunning murals as soon as I finish installing wainscoting in this space. Thanks for featuring one of my favorite design styles. I also love Scottish country design, which, of course, includes lots of tartan plaids!!!
Nancy Lancaster of Virginia, who designed interiors in England, is associated with the English Country House look. She was born Nancy Keene Perkins as the daughter of Thomas Perkins and his wife Elizabeth Langhorne, a daughter of Chiswell Langhorne. Her birthplace was Mirador, near Charlottesville, Virginia. She was brought up in Richmond, Virginia and New York City. Nancy Lancaster had four maternal aunts, of whom the most notable were Nancy, Lady Astor, a British politician, and Irene Gibson, wife of artist Charles Dana Gibson, who popularized the Gibson Girl. She is buried in Greenwood, Virginia. By coincidence, a couple of years ago my cousin started working at the Chiswell Farm & Winery in Greenwood, which is across from Mirador and had a family connection to i. There is a Langhorne Room and a Gibson Room in the building where they serve guests. My cousin was supposed to know something about the families as part of her job. The people at Mirador told her a lot of things, and there was a book available to her on the family. I researched the family and have quite a file on the 4 Langhorne sisters and their families, mostly from newspapers online. The articles include some about Nancy Lancaster. I also watched vintage articles showing Lady Astor who was in Parliament. So I was excited to see a article of the home of a lady in the Langhorne family. On Dec 4, 2023, there was a article on the Homeworthy website, HOUSE TOUR | Step Inside a Cozy Home in Richmond, Virginia. Textile designer Sarah Gibson Wiley takes us for a tour of her 1960’s ranch in Richmond, Virginia.
