The Interior Ministry Ninjas are a specialized unit in Sekiro that perform clandestine operations such as scouting and infiltrating Ashina Castle. They are particularly effective in dealing with common enemies, such as Vilehand and Lady-B. To defeat them, stay behind Vilehand, focus on using Long Spark, and engage the Interior Ministry Soldier with his deadly dual blades. Grapple to the roof and look over to the right to spot three Interior Ministry Ninjas on the roof at the back. Use Gachiin’s Sugar to get behind the first and perform Puppeteer to make the battle more fair.
Another enemy, the Tengu of Ashina, awaits you and is usually trying to kill him. Engage him and watch out for him summoning a nearby enemy. Make your way back through the castle, defeating enemies on your way to reclaiming the Upper Tower – Antechamber Idol. Rest up and take out the nearby Interior Ministry Ninja before grappling down to them.
The Interior Ministry Ninjas have two perilous attacks at the end of their combos, making it recommended to exploit openings provided by countering their perilous attacks. After landing a few hits, work on breaking their posture to defeat them. Be aggressive with them, as they have very few options to counterattack when forced to defend. Learn the Mikiri Counter and use it on them when they use the leg thrust attack. Dodging them until you break the Interior Ministry’s posture.

Easier way to stealth kill him is to kite him back down to the open area, let him near, and as soon as he starts one of his combos, sprint all the way back behind the shrine which he was guarding. Make sure you are off the wooden parapet. Wait a moment for him to get catch up a little bit, and hop on the parapet. Ninja wants to get behind the building to spot you, but he cannot just get off/on the parapet, except through the front stairs. If you time it right and do not let him reestablish line of sight, he will go yellow and stop. A few moments later, he will de-aggro and will be at your mercy. Consistently killed him like 20 times this way, hoping he drops some good mats (spoiler: he does not).
He’s my favorite mob hands down. Best tactic is to engage him aggressively and deflect his attacks. This will eventually bait him into either doing the 4 kick combo into a thrust or that high jump heel drop which is often followed by a perilous sweep. If he doesn’t do the sweep, it’s an opportunity for a counterattack. Sometimes he will do a 2 kick combo instead of 4 followed by a thrust. Also the best part about this strategy is that he doesn’t seem to do that surprise sweep at 1:37
I just beat the purple ninja today (Bought Sekiro on STEAM sale, glad I did coz this game is amazing). I was getting really frustrated with this enemy, and I googled your vid. It was certainly helpful. I don’t like to google guides to bosses as I prefer to defeat the challenges on my own. This purple dude was really annoying me though. After perusal your vid, I slowed down, focused on blocking and countering, and got that sweet deathblow. I used the axe on him as well. I’m starting to “get good” LOL.
Let’s go, I got him with the stealth kill first try. I lured him out then jumped down, he didn’t follow so I waited for a minute, popped Gachiins sugar then wall jumped back up there, I didn’t wait quite long enough but he didn’t see me when I was up there, so he started walking back towards the tower and I was able to get the kill. Good stuff
There is another method which I call the cheese-grater… basically, all you need to do is use your firecrackers and and get a little bit of damage out of him afterwards you can go in and out of the hole (yes, you will have to fall down and then do that wall jump until you get to the surface and immediately attack) and you can get up to 3 hits on him. Sometimes, you can even get a deathblow instantly. It’s the cheapest way you can do it, however, it will take a lot of time if you are bad at fighting him and desperate. Or you just can use the dodge, attack from time to time to keep his posture low and mikiri him a couple of times until he is down… yes, you can use the firecrackers or oil him up and use the flame prosthetic.
Best guide I found by far to fight this guy. I’m new to the game and beat the horse boss in 3 tries, got to this guy and got my butt handed to me. Figured it’d be good practice for some of the later bosses since most guides said it’s too hard for newer players. Finally got him on the 20th or so try, the tips helped lol. Subbed.
I probably win on the most ridiculous way you can take this guy out. I tried to cheese him by dropping off the cliff and going for a back stab, but that failed a few times, but I was still alive, so I dropped again. At one point, I decided to go back up and wait, but he spots me, comes near, and I hop back into the well and start jumping the walls until he gives up. Next thing I knew, he fucking drops INTO the well with me, I’m wondering what the fuck just happened and drop too, and IMMEDIATELY catch him in a back stab before I realize it at the bottom of the well. I wasn’t even targeted, so it wasn’t a drop kill. I must have hit the ground and triggered a back stab animation on reflex. Can anyone beat that?
Man this guy fucked me up. I’ve killed several bosses, got 8 prayer beads and many upgrades. I figured I’ll fight this guy easy but what the hell I got whacked out of my senses. Your guide was very helpful as I simply didn’t realize his foot attack was equivalent to a spear attack which can be mikiri countered. For several fights I couldn’t mikiri properly as I was dodging sideways instead. But finally all it needed was one mikiri and several parrys till the deathblow. Whew!
This guy absolutely kicked my arse repeatedly when I first encountered him, after defeating Genichiro I went back to have another pop at the guy and he went down like a sack of shit. A good opener is the ichimongi double as if you time it right you can basically smack him on the head twice as he lands from that jump off the pagoda.
The thing about this guy is that his speed and unpredictability is completely off the fucking charts compared to anything we’ve encountered up to this point in the game. Guy straight up shit on me for 3 hours before I figured out “Oh, I guess this really isn’t a Soulsborne game,” and after like maybe two rounds of figuring out the deflect / attack timings, I absolutely destroyed him. This enemy is basically the first one that really teaches you how you’re expected to play this game
I BEAT THIS DUDE AFTER 9 DEATHS!! T_T omg the last fight, was so intenseee!! I love this freaking game. It feels sooo much like an anime, like Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin) even better!, you just can’t believe the visuals tactics and moments in combat. This game teach the industries, that you don’t have to develop cinematics-gameplay to creates this amazing and sexies fights!
Trying to beat him 4th evening in a row (my total play is like 6 evenins), I hate this game. This is not a challenge, this is random bullshit. I’ve just completed fallen order on the maximum difficulty so as most of the games I play and it’s nothing compared to this piece of crap. I spend probably 10 hours in total trying to pass this fuc*in ninja and nothing helps. I can’t deflect, I can’t trick him with prosthetic things, I spend all my boosters etc I barely started to play this game and it gives such an impossible enemy to beat, what’s the point?! God damn these developers, this must be a joke. I’m barely holding myself to not drop this playthrought, I’ve watched ALL GUDIES about combat and NOTHING HELPS, GOD, HELP ME PLEASE, I’M BEGGING YOU, MY HANDS ARE SHAKING! F*ck my life!!!
i made a simple SAVE GAME BACKUP UTILITY HERE, just go to the CAVE, exit the game, and when you are in the MAIN MENU the game will save your progress and location, this is where you use the BACKUP UTILITY to make a backup copy of your progress and location. so when you die and you LOAD from the mod you will spawn right there in the cave for an easy rematch. you can do this with any BACKUP UTILITY MOD or even manually copy your SAVE Folders if you know how.
Great article!!! BUT!!! Those of us who aren’t the best at parrying will definitely have a better time dodging! His parries seem to have inconsistent I-Frames 😂I beat him by dodging and using the Ungo Sugar to absorb some of his attacks and it helped drastically! If you hate the run back just save and quit upload to cloud and reload every time 😉 HEY! beats cheesing this guy! Dodging is in the game 🤷♂️
The most efficient way to kill him: Get his attention. Casually walk towards the cliff which leads down to the river. As he approaches, jump off the cliff, so you’ll be in the river again. Take the same route (vertical tunnel) back up to where he is, and you’ll see him strolling back like nothing happened Sneak behind him and make a stealth kill. If he doesn’t stroll back after you hop back up, jump off that cliff again. The vertical tunnel may do too. Repeat it until he does.
I am absolutely in shock. That purple bastard has been smearing my face all over the ground, just straight wrecking me. Musta lost to him at least 20-30 times. I watch your article, try your tactic of not actually attacking, just blocking and Mikiri Countering… and I stomped his ass on the first try, without getting hit even once. Just two Mikiri Counters and that purple bitch is just a bad memory. Thank you so much for this article. You are a fucking LEGEND.
I had big difficulty adapting to this game’s punishing combat. Then I just got obsessed by winning against this arsehole when I was just at the beginning of the playthrough The rest of the minibosses seem easy after dying 25-30 times thanks to this prick. He absolutely never telegraphs his moves, his counters are rapid, his kicks are arhytmic, deals huge damage to posture and he’s just very mobile, give him ground or close in he always overwhelms the Wolf.
Tried your stealth technique and jumped down into the river. He did not follow. I wall-jumped up. I guess I was impatient because he immediately saw me. I jumped down the wall jump pit (took some fall damage). He jumped down too. In a panic, I run out of the little passage way and into the river. I climb out of the river and discover that he’s in the yellow alert stage in the passage way. He turns his back and starts walking away. I stealth kill him in the wall-jump pit passageway lol Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. Lol
3:45 I don’t play Sekiro, but it would be useful for other people if you were more specific about the time it takes for him to return from the cliff rather than just saying “for quite a long time”. That could mean any amount of time (within reason). Is “quite a long time” 2 minutes? 5 minutes? 10 minutes???? It’s not easy to guess how long that AI will wait.
Thank you! This is the quality of a “help” article I was looking for 🙂 Im new to FromSoftware games and this is legit the 3rd mini boss i found and he is taxing my patience so much. I am on the ‘kill all his life in like a 10 minute fight’ strat right now but seeing you breaking his posture so fast makes me think to try that strat (but not today). Anyway: Big Thank you!
I know this is an old game but I just started playing and I’m having difficulty parrying this guys attacks. I found this area by accident and found out there is a shinobi prosthetic to pick up. I want to get better in parrying his sword attacks but I’ve died about 30 times lol. Any tips on how to parry better other than “get better” lol
I just can’t beat this shitturd, not even with your article. I’ve probably died 50 times. He’s just too fast and it seems dependant on luck if you manage to time your attacks with all his different flurry of attacks. I can’t even time the fucking Mikiri because half the time I dodge instead because I’m a little busy timing my deflections and moving out of the way.. He also shatters my posture in like 2 attacks if I mess up. Then there’s getting stuck in environment/walls because I don’t really have the time to navigate the camera that much as well as the fight. And the camera itself fuck up and detargets at the best of times as well. Lovely fight.
I tried following the guide but I just suck at the game. I fought him till half health and then he killed me and I resurrected. I then decided to just jump down but he followed me and the funny thing was he survived. I then went swimming for a bit and stealth killed him in the cave you enter to wall jump up.
hmm i know on my first play through he devastated me so i went in befor to see how hte cheese works – but then i saw oh he only has 1 bar ? – and im like in front of the guardian ape – so i just wennt for the normal fight and he was anstonishingly easy this time O_O – like i learned about the nigiri counter on his leg attack ( which caused most of my troubles the first time) by accident on the on in the sewer thingy – wow guess one did learn playing it once befor ^^
so apparently there’s a 4th way to kill him because i was about to do the stealth kill trick but i ran up to the temple and as soon as he saw me i ran back down the stairs and just jumped off the cliff into the water before he could even hit me and fell off the cliff. like i got the scrap iron as i entered the water and got the exp for his death. he just fell off the cliff with me i guess. that was the greatest thing i have ever seen in this game so far.
I had to wait damn near 5 minutes before he starts to go back. This is like that red eyed knight in Boletaria in Demons Souls. But this feels much harder. I want to beat him fair the right way but he kills me in 2 hits. I can barely do anything. I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around how this game meant to be played.
I went at this for a bit and what I found is it’s easier to hit him once then respond to his counter. If he does the flip kick thing, you can dodge backwards and then hit him with the axe if you want for extra posture damage. But the general idea is hit him once then dodge backwards, that alone is enough to avoid the initial counter so you can tell what he is doing. Hitting him during the unblockable attacks does extra posture damage. Note – Unblockable, not uninterruptible.. hehehe Also hitting him once has the potential to make him do the attack you can Mikiri counter.
I perusal this after finally being able to end him after 500 tries or so. I’m so proud of myself for pulling this off very early in the game. Spamming whirlwind and the ability to use a long attack after using the shuriken helped a LOT, Mikiro counter INTO his kick (not to the side), after you hit him, get the fuck out of him by JUMPING away (as he might counterattack and hit you with a sword if you only dodge away). After dying 500 times, i came to the conclusion that he is only that difficult because of every hit takes 80 or 90% of your health.
I beat him thrice after many deaths in-between those kills to get the hang of him. Preferred a close combat approach where I just attack and parry non-stop rather than rely on Mikiri and dodge. What level were you? Because I had only 3 prayer beads (no upgrades), 2 healing flasks and 11 Vitality. Had to pause using firecrackers right when he was 2-3 blows from death as my posture would break despite perfect deflects.
On my 1st playthrough. I cant get my attack power above 2. Lol. This purple fucker is giving me hell. I cant seem to deflect him. I just get blocks and he waxes my posture meter. Guess I need to practice his timing. On the armored guy in the temple, I could perfectly deflect and Mirkiri counter every single hit in the fight, but I cant get one deflect on this purple fuck.
I think I’m not getting something, attempt 50. What about his non-red kicks? They seem to also be unblockable, in the article you seem to dodge them but I found that the bamboos get in the way and I don’t have room to dodge his kicks. Usually what happens is I block a few of his sword strikes no problem, but my posture damage is now at near full. I dodge some red sweep kicks and then he just two shots me with some normal kicks I try to block or failed to dodge. Also can’t seem to block some of his sweeping sword attacks, do I just hold down the block button or do I time right before? I tried both and sometimes his hits just land anyways.
The thing that I hate in this games is that even if you evade, the enemy attack animation will follow you, it is because of that shit target camera and it is so annoying. Sometimes even if you evade correctly, the attack just follows you to the end of your evading animation and the game believes that it is a hit… I’m getting tired of that, loving the game but ffs….
I struggle with this guy more than I did gyoubo (I think that’s how you spell it the guy on the horse) I beat him ridiculously fast but this guy is just annihilating my health bar has very few openings to hit him and has plenty of delayed timings that are really hard to Parry It feels like a blessing whenever he actually does the Mikiri counter move
