How To Color Grout Outside?

This video teaches how to stain grout or thinset-mortar tiles by using professional grade grout colorants. To change the color of grout, clean and dry the grout lines, then apply the colorant with a brush, covering them completely. Allow the colorant to dry, and wipe excess colorant off the tiles.

To change grout color, start by prepping the grout to remove dirt or residue, then apply two or more coats of paint once the surface is clean and dry. After the paint dries, buff the tile to give it a nice shine.

Old, dingy grout can make even the most beautiful tile design look worn. To change the color of grout, take a small amount of grout and add a few drops of paint. Mix the grout up according to manufacturer instructions. For dry indoor mosaic art, mix 1 heaped cup of Davco Easy Grout in Bright White with 1/2 tbsp acrylic paint in one plastic container.

Add color to grout with concrete pigment, mixing the pigment powder with grout to change its color to any custom color grout. Spread evenly using the Applicator Brush or toothbrush, working Grout Colorant into joint using a back-and-forth motion. Thin, even coats should be applied.

Choose the type of grout that best suits your project and view the grout color options. CUSTOM offers the most extensive designer-inspired grout. For the best results, use a 1:4 ratio of pigment to grout powder. Stir thoroughly to ensure an even blend before following your usual grout mixing.

Our unique outdoor grout stain, colourant dye, and sealer can restore dirty or ugly grout and point to a new look finish.

  • Hello, I have a question for you can you use latex paint to mix into grout? I am curious because I have a little sample thing of blue paint (I think it’s matte), and was curious if I can use it to mix into grout to change the color. I’m trying to do like an ombré effect with the grout for a mosaic piece I’m going to be making. So any advice or tips on how I can possibly achieve this will be much appreciated.

  • Excellent pointers; ever tried staining grout after it’s dried? Makes it possible to use multiple grout shades and colors within one project. Personally I like permanent markers prior to sealing the grout…..( I actually should have said prior to sealing because I think you would have trouble adhering the marker over sealed work. My apologies.)

  • Hi Julie, this is Casandra from MA. Thanks so much to your articles I am getting a ton of FREE stained glass this week. I called a stained glass store and she is retiring so she is happily giving it away to me. I pray will be a lot of colors. So excited! So my question is, can I use WHITE thin set as an adhesive for stained glass and then use gray thin set as a grout?
