Medicated soaps, shampoos, and creams can help control ear rash and flaking by controlling the skin oils and earwax (cerumen) that act as barrier protection to the delicate ear canal. Overcleaning the ear can lead to dryness as it removes skin oils and earwax, which are essential for preventing bacteria and fungi from growing and acting as the ear’s self-cleaning system by capturing debris.
Ear infections can cause itchy flaky skin in ears and are usually accompanied by pain and redness of the surrounding area. The aim is to remove irritants, such as dust while keeping the ear’s natural moisture balance. In harsh climates, cleaning is best done by suctioning under direct visualization using the open or operating otoscope head and a 5 or 7 Fr Frazier malleable suction tip attached to low suction.
Home remedies for dry flaky ears can be found in most homes, with the main goal being to avoid excessive cleaning. Regularly getting water in the ear, such as swimming, can cause scratching inside the ear and provide an environment for inflammation. Some effective tips include avoiding excessive cleaning, using moisturizers, avoiding excessive temperatures, using a humidifier, avoiding allergens, and drinking sufficient amounts of topical steroid creams for eczema and psoriasis.
Keeping the ears clean can be achieved by soaking a cotton ball on the outer ear opening, washing it away with a stream of water from the shower-head, applying calamine lotion to the affected skin, moisturizing or applying a cool, damp cloth to the skin, and irrigating the ear numerous times. Gently wash the inside of the outer ear with water or an emollient wash, and apply a damp cotton bud to the bowl.
Overall, maintaining ear hygiene and using over-the-counter solutions like hydrogen peroxide, mineral oil, baby oil, and sterile saline can help prevent earwax and maintain healthy ear health.

How to keep the outside of the ears clean?
To remove excess earwax buildup, gently clean the outside of your ears with a soft washcloth or baby oil, hydrogen peroxide, mineral oil, or glycerin. Oral drops, available over the counter, can be used to soften the wax. Water-based drops with hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide, acetic acid, docusate sodium, or sodium bicarbonate are effective, while oil-based drops with peanut, olive, or almond oils can also be used.
Why is my outer ear always flaky?
Dry skin in the ears can be caused by environmental irritants, chronic skin conditions, and aging. At home treatments include avoiding irritant products and applying an emollient. If these don’t work, consult a healthcare provider to determine the cause and prescribe medication. If left untreated, rubbing and scratching the ears can cause irritations, skin breaks, and infection. A pharmacist can recommend over-the-counter remedies, but if they don’t help, consult a healthcare provider or dermatologist. If these methods don’t work, it’s time to seek medical attention.
Why do my ears get crusty on the outside?
Crusty ears can be caused by various conditions, including ear eczema, skin conditions like psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis, environmental factors like temperature changes or allergies, and ear infections. Treatment depends on the cause and can typically be managed with lifestyle changes, over-the-counter ointments or lotions, and prescription drugs. This article explores common causes of dry, crusty ears and provides suggestions on how to manage them.
Why are my ears always dirty on the outside?
Earwax is a vital component of the outer ear canal, which connects the eardrum to the outside visible part of the ear. Most of the dirt found in the ear is made up of tiny dead skin particles, which are normal because the skin keeps renewing itself through constant shedding. The ceruminous glands secrete fats and other substances to clean the outer ear canal, keeping the skin soft and providing a protective acidic layer. Earwax, also known as cerumen, is constantly pushed towards the outer ear by natural movements of the lower jaw.
The amount of earwax produced varies from person to person and is particularly common in men and older people. As the ceruminous glands shrink and make less secretions, the earwax becomes drier, but dead skin particles continue to build up. This results in the outer ear canal not cleaning itself as well as it does in younger people. If too much earwax is produced or dead skin particles build up, a plug of earwax may form, affecting hearing. Experts estimate that removing an earwax plug can improve hearing by 10 decibels.

Why is my ear wax dry and flaky?
Flaky earwax is not solely a result of genetics but can also indicate health conditions like eczema and psoriasis. External factors like fear and anxiety can increase earwax production, similar to sweating on the forehead or under the arms. Earwax can also indicate a middle or inner ear infection if it appears in colors like green, yellow, white, or black. Infections require immediate medical attention and appropriate antibiotics. Earwax can also block the ear canal, impairing hearing, if it doesn’t come out on its own.
How to get rid of dry skin around an ear piercing?
To keep the skin around your ear piercing moisturized and protected, Dr. Gohara recommends adding a dab of petrolatum-based product like Vaseline or Aquaphor. If you’ve recently pierced your ears, it’s important to take aftercare to prevent further irritation and potential infection. The ear has layers of skin, and the piercing creates a tiny cut in the skin and earlobes, which needs to regenerate around the new earring. Different ear piercings heal at different rates, but there are simple steps you can take to prevent further irritation and infection.
To treat the area correctly, expect during the healing process, and take action if you notice signs of an ear piercing infection, follow these tips:
- Clean the area thoroughly with soap and water, and avoid touching the piercing area.
- Apply Vaseline or Aquaphor to the ear to keep the skin moisturized and protected.
- Avoid touching the ear lobes or earlobes, as they are the most sensitive areas to piercing.
- If you notice any signs of an infection, seek medical attention immediately.
Why is there white stuff in my outer ear?
Chronic suppurative otitis media occurs when the ear drum doesn’t heal, causing fluid to drain out without pain. This can occur after a middle ear infection or if you have grommets. An outer ear infection, also known as swimmer’s ear, occurs when the skin inside the ear canal swells and becomes infected, causing discharge to build up in the canal and drain from the ear. Serious infections like mastoiditis or malignant otitis externa can also cause fluid from the ear.
Why is my ear wax so dry and flaky?
A 2015 study revealed that individuals of East Asian descent are more likely to have dry, flaky earwax, while those of Caucasian or African descent are more prone to having sticky or wet earwax. Additionally, dermatological conditions such as eczema and psoriasis may result in the formation of hard, dry earwax. Additionally, hormonal fluctuations, age, and other variables can influence the characteristics of earwax. The use of home remedies, such as earwashing kits and eardrops, has been demonstrated to be an effective method for loosening impacted earwax.
How do you clean dry flaky ears?
Ear eczema is a condition that causes dry, discolored, itchy, and bumpy skin on the outside or inside the ear canal. It damages the skin barrier function, making the skin more sensitive and prone to infection and dryness. To treat ear eczema, wash your ears with warm water and mild soap, then apply petroleum jelly or skin care ointment over them. Avoid touching your ears to prevent dirt or bacteria from entering the area. Psoriasis and ear eczema are two different skin conditions with different appearances, itching, and appearances.

📹 Top 5 Causes of Itchy Ears (and Treatment Too!)
A very common problem for which patients see an ENT is the chronic itchy ear. There is no pain… it’s just the itching in the ear …
I had a spot of Seborrheic dermatitis on my for head and the dry itching, flaking inside my ear. I thought the flaking in my ear was more of a dermatitis as I have a variety of dermatitis on and off. My dermatologist looked at my ear and said that it was more fungal-based. I tried prescription medicine nothing would help. I read about tea oil being a natural healing as it is a fungal reducer. I tried very small amounts on both spots in my forehead and my ears and it has controlled it very nicely. It actually can go totally away for a while and if it starts to come back, I immediately use the tea oil again. I’m very happy with the results with using the tea oil. I also have found using a soft microfiber towel, slightly damp on the part that is very flaky, will help take the flakes off without causing a lot of irritation. With reducing the flaking, it is also helped reduce the itching. I use this along with the tea oil. 👂🏻
Thank you so much Dr Dray! I submitted this question. You gave me food for thought: I have hyperhydrosis and extremely narrow ear canals which with the help of the article, I now wonder are what have led to fluid build up and chronic ear infections my entire life. The dry flaky skin I have is only around the inner rim of the ear and the conch and only started in my 40’s as my skin all over has become dryer with age. No doctor, PCP or EMT, has ever explained all this. That’s why I figured “let me ask YOU!” I’ll find a derm in my area and I hope they’ll be as thorough and helpful as you! Thanks again!!
I get eczema around my left ear more than around my right. I get it behind my ear and all in the cracks and crevices. It’s even near the opening of my ear on the inside. It gets red and itchy and flaky. And sometimes it bleeds. If I put on my steroid cream it clears it up for a bit but then it comes back. So it never fully goes away. It’s very annoying.
At my last check up, I asked my doctor what was wrong with the inside of my ears. There’s no flaking, but definitely can feel the sensation of dryness. He told me I have no wax. I started using just a smidge of CeraVe healing ointment on my pinky tip and massaging it into the outer part of the ear canal and it’s made a huge difference.
Thanks for the mineral oil suggestion. Years ago I stopped using q-tips to dry my ears after showering, but the discomfort of wet ears after a shower follwes with very dry earwax and ear canal discomfort has always lingered. I’ve always been told by GP’s “there’s nothing wrong in there”. Going to use the mineral oil to see if that alleviates the discomfort!
Omgosh Dr. Dray this is crazy.. this has been happening to me!! I thought I had psoriasis.. I can just peel off the dry skin and it will come back within like an hour. This has happened this year.. I have never had this problem before.. my mom and sister have psoriasis so I just assumed I have it on my ears.. I need to see my dermatologist. Mine is on the tragus on both ears.
In 2020 I wore my raycons none stop for a year. Eventually I developed a yeast infection in my ears like swimmers ear. I’m guessing since the raycons had silicone covers on them that it helped hold moisture in my ear thereby aiding the yeast to grow. It was incredibly painful, took a year and a half to heal and required me seeing an ENT. Since then I developed almost like an eczema issue in my ears. Where they get real itchy and tender for no reason. Of course I’ll itch it which only makes the irritation worse and eventually leads to another infection in my ear. Now I have to use these oil drops in my ear every time I start to feel them itch to prevent further issues and infection. Allll because of some raycons! Now I stick to over the ear headphones or bone conducting headphones. It’s been a nightmare.
Omg. I’ve experienced this almost my entire life and never knew what it was from. I find it to be super embarrassing, not only just because of the symptoms themselves, but because I never hear ANYONE else having this same issue. And when things feel isolating they feel worse. I can literally get a dark colored T-shirt and wipe the inside of my ears and it will have a chalky/dry skin residue. Sorry if that’s gross. It drives me nuts. The areas in the corner of my eyes and between my eyebrows get dry like this too
I never knew this was a thing. I actually had flaking, itchy skin on my earlobes and the rest of my outer ear about a month ago. I felt like some kind of freak because I’ve never had this nor heard of it in anyone else. Luckily, I figured out that it was due to some headphones I was wearing, and I helped it heal by stopping the headphones and babying my ear skin with cetaphil cream, and now I’m fine. I’m glad I knew how to treat irritated skin, thanks to this website.
Thank you so much for this information!! Also, I bought one of those earwax removal probes that hooks up to my phone just so I can look inside my ear canal when something goes wrong. It isn’t good to try and use it for wax extraction, though. It would be way too easy to damage the ear drum, or lose the tip inside the ear.
A while ago my dad, in both ears in the end, but in the right ear first, had eczema. It didn’t go with weaker corticosteroids, and so I gave him my heavier corticosteroid cream, called “Dermovate” in Belgium (I know, you’re not supposed to do that but he was flaking all over the bed, sheets, living room; disaster for my mother who had to constantly clean this up). Anyway, it went away. Now we just maintain with a non-steroid cream, called Bepanthen Eczema. It’s very nice! He does have seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp, but this was nothing like it. Examined multiple times by the GP, but he always got the weaker steroid cream and that did zilch. Often you have to just hit it with everything you’ve got.
When i was a toddler my parents used to tell me that earwax is filthy and it constantly needs to be removed and let the ear be squeaky clean 😅 but when i went to high school that way of notion changed when i learned that earwax is extremely beneficial for the ear because due the tiny space in the ear there must be a lubricating substance in order to help the cell turn over of the skin there and have an overall aiding role supporting the skin’s ph preventing bacterial infection and other bad stuff from happening 😊❤. So unless your earwax is super hard don’t bother with it if yes there are also ear drop containing mineral oil or squalene or simple emmolient drops that help with the cell turn over and the overall natural and normal lubrication of the ear canal ❤. I loved how you approach every single matter with such delicate method 😊❤ Doctor Andrea.
I have never tried the warm mineral oil. I have heard many years ago warm olive oil was used to fight some ear infections. I have made my own mixture of 50% of a 3% hydrogen peroxide and 50% water. I put a few drops in my ear and I can hear and feel the wax breaking up and bubbling to the surface. I do caution that some ears are very sensitive and hydrogen peroxide if used to often is not good for the ear, so make sure it is diluted with water.
I have been dealing with seborrheic dermatitis in my ear canal and scalp for years since last 25 years, it is getting worse in my ears especially and prescription ointments will calm as long as i use it and after 2 weeks it’s the same. Gotten to tye point where i have flakes showing and it’s embarrassing and i have to constantly scrape off the skin everydays to make it not look so bad.
Thank you so much for this article!! I’ve had dry, very itchy skin in my ear canal for years now and doctors never take it seriously enough to do anything. I have autoimmune disease and have mentioned this as a possible cause for the itchy ear canals but have not been heard by medical professionals. This is very validating for me. Although when I say I heard from my doctor on YouTube, they’ll write me off again.
Does this type of dermatitis affect scalp also? I have always had flaky scalp that gets very itchy if I sweat or sleep with damp hair, and I’ve found a similar type of scabbing/flaking around the opening of my ear canal. I’ve been prescribed ketoconazole (sp?) and another topical, is there a non prescription version I could get and are those two things related? My ear and dandruff? It seems they can be but you mentioned behind the ear, and mine is in the ear. I wear ear buds for work bc I’m autistic, but I can’t stop doing that. Any thing would help, please and thank you ❤
Have you ever heard of total white ear wax? It was a normal color and changed to white? It is very heavy creamy white consistancy and I have to clean the ears once a week. I do have since college Seborrheic at the entance of the ear canal that hasgotten worse over the years. I thought this was fugal in nature put and ENT told me it wasn’t when I asked him to look at it under the microscope he put in my ear. What is the cause of this change to white?
I clean my ear flakes almost like 3 timer per day, is not much but sometimes it feels like I dont clean my ears. I also have similiar between my eyebrows. I saw a dermathologist and she said I have like seborrheic dermatitis and is not a health issue but rather a skin type.. so anoying not much what to do
Every otorhinolaryngologist I’ve seen has said I have eczema in my ear canals, but most of them prescribed me steroid ear drops, and one of them told me to use almond oil after I had completed the steroid treatment. The almond oil helps a bit, but it’s not very nice to handle. Thank you for making this article Dr Dray.
Ever since I had (what I think was) an untreated ear infection years ago in college, I’ve had very itchy ear canals with built up skin 🤷♀️I can itch them raw some days. That of course makes the dry skin even worse as it heals…it’s a cycle. I have eczema elsewhere and never even thought about this potentially being eczema in the ears 🤯
I was on vacation in a beach town. Ears itching like crazy, realized I forgot my tiny tube of prescription cream. No pharmacy nearby, late night went to a takeout pizza place & asked for a little plastic cup (like for extra cheese or pepper flakes) with some olive oil. Relief! Just needed a drop on my pinky tip to rub around the ear hole. My whole character improved!
I know this is weird but ever since you got your new microphone I can’t watch your articles 😩 it’s almost like the microphone is too sensitive and it feels like you’re talking directly into my ear drum, like I can hear you breathing in and out between words. I know super weird, but just wanted to share this feedback in case anyone else has the same problem 😢
Thank you all for your comments You have made me realize i am not alone. Mine started less than 2 years ago and it has grown worse. I am even scared of the hospital because nothing has permanently worked. I was not born with ear itching but it started when I was almost 30yrs. Even the steroids given only complicated the itching that I had to stop using it. I use olive oil but it itches a lot that I feel tickled. I am shameless when it comes to itching that i even use tissue because I was told not to use cotton buds. I am tired that i can’t calculate how much I have spent in less than 2 years 😭😢
itchy ear syndrome side note: severe anxiety can cause itchy ears. Why? Because when you’re very worried, your blood pressure elevates. This makes your ear drum buldge up and down with each heart beat. In turn, this makes your internal ear hairs twitch which causes bad inner itching. So, the throbbing of your ear drum caused by increased blood pressure and twitching inner ear hairs. All from anxiety. So bad at times, you’ll feel there’s a spider or insect crawling on your eardrum.
The best solution I found is using Cortizone-10. I don’t get the cream, rather I get kind that is a liquid, but has an applicator tip. I then use a Q-Tip and apply the applicator to that and soak it down good and then apply to my ear canal. I only need to do this maybe 1-2 times a week and that will get rid of the itching – even when I have ear buds in that has a tendency to create am itchy sensation.
I’m here because at this very moment i am suffering from an ear infection caused by itchy ear ( my ear has it’s own heartbeat) So very painful as many of you know. It’s a vicious cycle, ears get insatiably itchy, i scratch with a Q tip or my fingers and boom in a few days i’m nursing a ear infection. I hope when i go back to the docs he can give me a cream to stop the itch so i don’t end up in this situation again.
This gets me wishing I could reach into my ears and give them a mighty scratch. I have never had eczema but, a friend went for a medical and was told she had eczema in her ears’..she was advised to use a small amount of Sudocrem now and again. It worked for her and for me,so when the itching begins I use the Sudocrem just once then,I’m ok for a couple of months. Hope this helps others…
Whenever my children scratch their ears, I would use a powerful mini torch to check their inner ears . Usually it’s a buildup of wax and residual soap . I use a Qtip coated with antiseptic cream to clean and remove them . The cream prevents the Qtip from shedding and also not causing damage to the ear’s thin skin .
thank u Dr. most valuable information. I have itchy ears particularly right ear. I am cleaning with cotton every twice in a week. I found lot of brownish wax secretion with itching. please prescribe an ear drop to bring out the sticky wax if any and to stop the unbearable itching. I am homely not employed. thank you Dr.
Hi I am an ENT doctor.your explanation is inadequate. 1st cause is water entering ear while head bath.proper care should taken that water doesn’t enter ear! 2nd cause is fungus or mould! 3rd is using of ear buds to clean.never encourage ear buds usage as it causes otitis externa/TM perforation,TMJ arthralgia etc., 4th is severe reflux disease i.e,LPRD/GERD and causing referred otalgia and itching! 5th is anemia/Avitaminosis
How about government implants electronic listening device that is also a speaker. A tiny phone if you like. Battery implanted in arm with wires run through artery up the neck. Thing is it operates on GPS so can be hacked by bad guys who drug you and tell you do stuff you can’t remember.. OK I’ve got a crazy imagination. But I seen it in sci-fi film… “Would be mental that like know what I mean like”.. Please don’t take this seriously its meant to make people laugh during these difficult times 😉
I always take a good quality Qtip and gently twist it continuously in one direction while very slowly going deeper into my ear canal. When the very tip of the Qtip reaches my eardrum the twisting Qtip scratches my ear drum ever so gently and it feels so damn good. But at that point you really have to be careful because the slightest move forward will hurt badly but it gives you a relief like no other.
It’s often eczema, and on just the eardrum!–though it might seem as if the whole ear canal itches! One out of every ten people in the world have this at any given time! Your ENT will prescribe Fluocinolone Acetonide Oil Ear Drops, 0.01 %, and the bottle comes with a dropper to put the drops in your ear. Using this will relieve the itching. The bottle says to put 5 drops into the affected ear, but I only need 2 or 3 drops at a time. (The eardrum–at the back of the ear canal–is only about half an inch inside the ear.)
Everyday, my ears 👂 👂 are very itchy is perhaps 🤔 the ears 👂👂are probably cleaning 🧹 🧼 🧽 themselves. When my ears 👂 👂 become itchy, it feels uncomfortable 😣 😳 🥴 . I have no wax in my ears 👂 👂 which it’s good 👍 😌 😊 . I wear two 2️⃣ hearing aids 🦻 🦻 in both ears 👂 👂 everyday since 1980 because I have moderate hearing loss in both ears 👂 👂. I scratch my ears 👂 👂 when it gets itchy to get rid of the nasty 🤢 itch. I place the pen 🖊️ top 🔝 in my ears 👂 👂 to find if there’s any wax in my ears 👂 👂 and no sign 🪧 of wax. Good 👍. I place warm water 🚿 💦 💧 in my ears 👂 👂 to leave in the ear 👂 canal for around five 5️⃣ minutes and let the water 💦 out of my ears 👂 👂 . The ears 👂 👂 feel comfortable after that. 👍
What he is describing is not what some of us have, who have tried every single thing we can lay our hands on, and still cannot get it resolved. I don’t remember if the doctor called my condition eczema or psoriasis. But my ears were SO itchy it would wake me up several times during the night, and I would be sticking my finger in my ear, because I had no choice. If I was able to restrain myself, oftentimes a nerve in my ear would start to flutter until the ear got scratched. Weird. But I have it under control now, and this is what I have learned. NEVER stick your finger in your ear unless your hands have been washed and sanitized. The salt and bacteria from your finger makes the itching much worse. When I started using Q-tips instead (I had them right next to my pillow), there was a definite lessening of symptoms right away. When the itching, stinging and burning was out of control, I would wet a paper towel, put hand soap on it, and use my finger to get the soap all around inside my ears. I would rinse the paper towel out well and do it again with plain water to rinse, and I also used a rubber ear syringe to squirt it deeper, using cold or slightly warm water. I tried prescriptions, OTC eczema remedies, natural oils, soaps, antibiotic creams, etc. No success. Then I started using a product called Bee Magic, a totally natural product of olive oil and four products made by bees and pine trees. It has an antibiotic action, and immediately soothes and stops the itch and pain. I’ve not had a really bad episode now for about a week, using the Bee Magic.
You see my case Is different nobody understands… I’ll explain hopefully somebody can help me out .. now imagine putting ur android speaker to ur ear and letting loud music play into ur ear and it vibrates and tickles my ear drum too good. .. but later leaves me with this good-itchy ear canal sensation sometimes…..
I use buds every day like twice a day and everyday it gets itchier but everytime I clean my ear nothing comes out. Not even a color. What’s wrong with me I got addicted I dont know what to do. First is my left ear I treated it with steroidal ear drop but then a couple of months after the right ear started to itch. This time my left ear again. I need a rehab
Had this problem for years usually be my left ear that itches use mineral oil and Aveeno hydrocortisone my doctor prescribed it helps a lot like can hear better do suffer from allergies when went to my ENT appointment back in June for my sleep apnea appointment told the nurse my ears be itching especially left one that itches bad gave some drops as well using hasn’t been itchy like my ear get ready off few weeks back did put some Aveeno lotion believe it’s dry skin take showers so water probably get in the canal who knows live in town with bad water so not telling wonder got skin taking shower in that mess.
What about coconut oil? 🤔 What about hydrogen peroxide for cleaning inside the ears with drops with just plain hydrogen peroxide, Or maybe with a half and half with water? I do use witch hazel too for things. Usually if I put drops in my ears, It’s either stuff made for ears, Or usually just hydrogen peroxide I guess lately. I’ve had alot of ear infections when I was a child. I had at least tubes surgery at least 1x that I know of. I’ve always have very irritable ears though.
Hey umm I need help with my right ear which has a condition going on for I think a month already. My right ear outside area, it gets very very itchy and when u use a cotton bud to clean, the dry skin will be removed and my ear will generate like a very yellowish colour and actually after removing the skin, it gets very yellowish wet-like jelly thingy which idk what it is. When I use a towel to wipe it, it shows a very yellowish colour or sometimes a yellowish dry skin follows along. Btw though it will get very reddish after that. I did went to a doctor and applied a cream on it but then it came back again. Sometimes when I clean the inside, a yellowish colour appear. Is it like some sort of a protection thing?? The yellowish thing protects the wound from infections or diseases?? After that, it will just become yellowish wet and over time, it will Harden and form dry yellow skin. Idk how to explain this bcs I’ve applied cream for a week but it’s still there. Maybe I’ve been touching my ear often and also cleaning my ear often with cotton bud?? Should I leave my right ear alone for 2 weeks or…???? Pls I need help I can’t struggle anymore. I’m even wearing hearing aids. I can wear it on my left but not my right bcs of the yellow dry skin wet thingy. It’s been many weeks now I think reached 1 month already. Btw though should I wet it while showering and how do I wipe it maybe that’s bcs it came back bcs I wipe it. Should I ignore and don’t wipe or use a cotton to clean?? Need help here if anyone has experience something like this before or any doctors seeing this comment.
I want to laugh so histarically hard at this article. First of all, genetics play a major role when it comes to the health of you body including, your ears! Then there are your eating choices and habits. And finally, this article contradicts what doctors tell you, do not use q-tips. Everyone should try Clinere’s and a battery operated Lizard Cam to check the inside of your ears. Also, if, you’re not allergic to olive or coconut oil, place some oil on the inside of your ears with a clean pinkie finger. Adding water can make this worse.
Today i was washing my hands in the bathroom with one earphone in and the other hanging. When i put the other one in my ear i felt a cooling sensation in my ear, i realized the earphone had a little bit of tooth paste on it somehow. It kinda helped stop the itching though once i used a qtip to clean my ear
