Three rules to stone. 1 – Stone laid so it’s longer than it’s height 2 – No more than 2 dry joints 3 – At least 1 yard between jumpers So, stones should always be horizontally longer than their height. The dry joint is where you have 2 vertical joints in a line, don’t do a third. And a jumper is a large stone, keep them spaced away from each other. The closer you stick to those rules, the better your stonework looks. So if you see a good wall, look to see how it followed those rules.
Cold joint?? Sorry, you need to do the proper scratch coat behind the stone masonry. All you need to do after you apply the scratch coat you wet the surface, then you apply high strength thin set mortar before applying regular cement mortar and buttering the back of the stone veneer with the same high strength thinset mortar. It will be a proper bond and will there will be no “cold joint”.
