This video provides a step-by-step guide on how to replace a double-hung window sash. The process involves measuring the existing frame, removing and disposing of old sashes, fixing the window frame if necessary, installing new jamb liners, and installing replacement window sashes. The video also teaches apprentices how to install new replacement windows that will fit into the existing window openings of the original part of the house.
If your house has double-hung windows equipped with sashes that need replacing, you have three options: install a window sash replacement kit, install a frame and sash unit, or install a new sash kit or a wood or vinyl replacement insert inside your existing window jamb. To replace the upper or lower window sash on your A-Series, follow these steps:
- Measure for a new window sash. Use the measurements to inform your purchase of a new sash or window component.
- Remove and dispose of old sashes. Inspect the existing frame, position the liner clips, attach the jamb liners, install the upper sash, install the lower sash, and replace the window stops.
- Install the new jamb liners. Gently pry off the stop with a flat screwdriver or a small prybar.
- Unlock the window. Lift or lower the sash 3-4 inches, tilt it towards you, and lower it against the sill. Remove existing sash weights and recycle cast iron weights. Air seal and insulate the sash weight cavities.
- Start by removing the parting bead, which may be nailed or press-fit in place.
