How To Apply Wood Cladding To An External Wall?

The process of installing timber cladding involves several key steps. First, ensure the surface is clean, dry, and smooth before installing the cladding. Then, install the framing to support the weight of the cladding and install a moisture barrier to prevent water from penetrating the wall. Brickwork is the most popular choice, but the quality of the bricks also affects their appearance.

Timberland timber cladding is an attractive, durable, and cost-effective material that can transform the exterior appearance of buildings. It can add value to a property and protect the structure. There are various types of timber cladding, including horizontal timber cladding, brick slips, and characterful stone. Each type has its pros and cons, along with styles and associated costs.

When installing timber cladding, start by measuring your walls and ensuring you have enough cladding to cover your entire home. Cover your home in house wrap and fix it, keeping the timber off the ground with good polythene wrapping and natural air flow.

Some popular timber cladding options include Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, and Alaskan pine. When choosing your cladding, consider the electrical fittings, attach battens, and prepare the first row of cladding.

In summary, timber cladding is a popular choice for homeowners looking to give their home’s exterior a natural and unique look. By following these steps, you can create a beautiful and functional cladding system that enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of your home.

What wood is best for exterior cladding?

Western red cedar, European larch, European oak, and Douglas fir are popular cladding species due to their resistance to insects, moisture, and rot. However, species like spruce, fir, and pine require treatment with chemicals like boron to prevent decay and increase fire resistance. Softwood cladding, costing £5-8/m2, requires regular painting and staining, requiring three coats of stain when installed.

Despite its cost, softwood is not necessarily the most cost-effective option. The sapwood content of timbers is non-durable, so if present, it requires preservative pre-treatment. Overall, the choice between species depends on the specific needs and budget.

Plastic cladding, also known as uPVC cladding, is a cost-effective option for budget-conscious property owners due to its lightweight nature and availability in various colors. Although it may not offer high performance properties due to its vulnerability to cracking and UV exposure, it is a suitable choice for projects with tight budgets. Zinc cladding is an attractive option for properties due to its visual appeal and various forms, such as cassette panels, standing seam, or shingles.

It can be used to clad the entire façade or a single element, making it an ideal addition for property remodeling. Zinc can be chemically treated to alter its natural patina, resulting in a more weathered look, which typically takes 3-10 years to achieve.

Does external cladding cause damp?

External wall insulation can trap moisture, compromising building structural integrity and indoor air quality if not installed or maintained correctly. While it can improve energy efficiency, it may alter a building’s appearance and not be suitable for all architectural styles. Compatibility with existing structures and local regulations is crucial to avoid aesthetic issues. Installing wall insulation can be complex and costly, involving scaffolding and significant disruption to occupants. The long-term benefits must be weighed against the initial expense.

Does wood cladding need an air gap?

Wood cladding typically requires an air gap for proper ventilation and moisture management. The specific requirements may vary depending on the wood type and installation details. To fasten tongue and groove cladding to a wall, install furring strips or battens, align the first board with the top of the wall, nail it in place, securely interlock the tongues and grooves, and trim the last board to fit.

The term “profile” refers to the style of cladding, such as loglap with a curve and shiplap with a scallop for better water run-off. Matching cladding, with its two chamfered edges, has a matching v-groove where the boards meet.

How to clad an external wall with wood?

In order to clad an external wall, it is first necessary to attach battens to the wall and then fix the cladding in place. In the case of a timber frame wall, the battens should be attached to the studs and the cladding fixed in place. It is imperative to ensure the presence of a breather membrane to facilitate airflow. In the case of a cavity wall, the battens should be attached with a plug and screw, and the cladding should be fixed to the battens.

Do I need a membrane under timber cladding?

The use of a breather membrane in cladding is crucial for exterior applications, as some timber species and modified timbers, like OrganoWood, are better at dealing with water. Local building regulations may require a breather membrane for building permission, and its location can affect the need for a membrane. For exterior applications in high rainfall areas, a breather membrane may be necessary, while interior applications in low humidity spaces may not.

The construction method also plays a role, with tighter, overlapping boards providing better water resistance. In general, a breather membrane is recommended for exterior cladding, while interior cladding should be consulted with a professional. Is it better to screw or nail cladding?

The attachment of timber cladding necessitates the utilisation of nails or screws. For softwoods such as cedar or larch, nails with an angular ring shank and a flat head, or cut pointed screws, are appropriate fastening devices. Hardwoods are better suited to screws, and small or lost-headed fasteners are not recommended. The nails or screws utilized should be of the 2-2 variety. It is imperative that the fastener be at least five times the thickness of the cladding panel in order to ensure optimal penetration with the batten situated behind it.

Is wood cladding cheaper than brick?

Brick and fiber cement cladding require less maintenance but may be more expensive to install, whereas timber cladding can be a cost-effective long-term solution if properly maintained.

How long does wood cladding last?

Timber cladding, such as Western Red Cedar, European Oak, or Siberian Larch, can last over 30 years with proper installation, treatment, and maintenance. A leading UK specialist offers a variety of sustainable species, designer profiles, and high-performance pre-treatment options for projects of all shapes and sizes. They provide a taste of what might be possible with their recent case studies.

Is it cheaper to render or clad?

Cladding and rendering are cost-effective options for enhancing a property’s aesthetics. Both methods add value to the property, and a tasteful and stylish project can likely recoup costs. However, factors like species and pre-coating can increase project costs. Budget should not be the deciding factor, as both options add value to the property. The decision should be based on personal preference for the visual appearance of a timber clad or rendered wall.

Can you DIY external cladding?

Overcladding a home is a task that can be completed by the homeowner, provided that they possess the requisite skills. Composite timber panels are the optimal choice for this undertaking, as they are lightweight, can be installed by a single individual, and require only standard carpentry tools.

  • super detailed and informative article, plenty tricks and details to plan and look out for – thank you mate!!! “allowances for expansion & contraction also in mitres – WELL NOTED”… also, on a lighter note, looking at your size: Man, I would not like to be the client disputing your invoices… 😂 all-round – just brilliant!!! 👊

  • Nice work, i have a couple of questions if that’s ok? 1. Do regs not require counter battening for vertical cladding to allow airflow? 2. Ho to you attach the house wrap to the block work prior to battening? Thanks for the content, i’m going to ask for some samples of that cladding as it looks really nice.

  • I found that the gap between the cladding and the batten when installed would be enough to allow air circulation. Having installed vertical battens then horizontal battens before I realised this meant that I have done twice the work that was needed. The product itself is very good and I would use it again.

  • Hello Simon, lovely work as always. Do they not supply some sort of trim detail at the bottom so it finishes neatly over the blockwork. Like some sort of Z piece, so the cladding sits over it and then it sits over the brick or block at the bottom, I think that would give you a nicer detail at the bottom, would you not agree. Atb to you and mark 👍
